UND opens as a 4.5 point favorite 4.5 point favorites? Who have they beaten? Oh, that's right - NO ONE!

I really wish I was going to this game now. I also wish they would bring back the Sitting Bull trophy.

There is a very odd smug sense of superiority from UND fans regarding the Big Sky. I guess when no one else will have your football team you have to double down on that attitude. UND's sense of superiority of the Big Sky against the MVFC may be and probably is misguided. When it comes to UND vs USD the Hawks fans have every right to expect a win against the Coyotes. I expect them to win as well. Give Nielson and the Coyotes another year and a rematch in Vermillion and I see a completely different result. People can expect a 20 point Coyote win and that is fine but things just don't tend to go well in that building for the Yotes. The Coyotes offense really revolves around Streveler and if the Sioux only just contain him a little they will have a good chance. Typically teams that have good offenses and mediocre defenses tend to play much better at home. Offenses tend to click at home better than on the road and so so defenses tend to play better at home with the added energy. Great defenses tend to play well everywhere they go. It's the mediocre defenses that don't tend to pack their game with them when they play in places like the Alerus Center. We will see but my gut says UND does just about what they want to against the USD defense. I think the defense will get better with time but I don't think that time is coming quite yet this weekend.

UND opens as a 4.5 point favorite 4.5 point favorites? Who have they beaten? Oh, that's right - NO ONE! Spreads are what they are for a reason and the people that create them don't take the slightest factor lightly. Betting against Vegas is a losing venture in the long run, but hopefully this time Vegas gets is wrong. I thought the spread would probably be closer to 6 so I don't think 4.5 is a huge amount of disrespect. Once the Coyotes prove themself as a program a little more than this kind of a thing works itself out in the end and the lines start moving more favorable towards USD. Any way you want to mold the clay the Coyotes got trounced by New Mexico and had to pull out a minor miracle to beat an average Weber State team. USD as a program has yet to establish themselves and that is partially why the Coyotes are under dogs along with other factors such as mentioned above.

Quick rivalry related question: Why are NDSU and supposedly SDSU so against UND joining the MVFC? I'm not sure I understand why that would be anything but good for both of them.

If your statement is true (and I don't doubt it), the main factor would be that NDSU & SDSU would have to "share the sandbox" so to speak with another conference member in the same region. Both schools had difficulty beating the Sioux in the past. Tough place to play as our record against them shows. I hope they join the MVFC/Summit but won't hold my breath.

Well I have thought about a prediction all week. I think this game could really go either way. I have not watched UND's games, but saw highlights, stats, and opinions on their strength/weaknesses. UND reminds me of USD in many ways including appearance. Their Adidas jerseys look just like USD's in a different color scheme. The Yotes will need to be able to run the ball with Streveler to open up some shots downfield. UND's strength is their D line so I think this will be the biggest factor in the game; Streverler vs. UND Dline. Turnovers as always will be the next biggest factor. The Yotes can't give UND any free points if they want to win. The Yotes D looked decent vs Weber State and it should help getting Wessel back. Santiago is very shifty and can outrun anyone if he gets to the 2nd level. It will be vital to have good tackling vs him. I think the Yotes can win this game, but we notoriously lay eggs on the road. If I'm betting, I'm going UND 28-24. I hope I am wrong.

I don't put a lot of stock into these ratings until we are a lot farther down the road, but I can agree with this ranking having USD and UND pretty close together.
