Third game of the season, I think Nielson slides Streveler a couple more pages from the playbook.
Yotes can cover the "tall white boys"
I think we find some holes and Fredrick breaks a long one.
Guessing a score similar to nccyote prediction.
GO YOTES!!

One thing is for certain, we will see if the team we saw last Saturday come back to win what was an improbable game to win given the circumstances is for real. I have said this repeatedly....you don't know what kind of team you have given the lockeroom situation. If these guys truly have the grit they displayed against Weber State, it will surface. This is an even matchup as I see it. UND had the guts to try and win against an FBS team on the road, so that tells me their coach is comfortable with his team. I think Coach Nielsen and his staff did a remarkable job coaching last week, and not because they won. It's how they coached down the stretch. No panic, great clock management, and continuous one on one coaching.
If we are fortunate enough to get the win, then I like our chances of being above .500 in the MVFC. And that would be no small task. Destined teams win games like this, they just find the way.

Ha! Look at their forum....they are talking a lot of smack! I was thinking the same thing....aren't you 0-2? Slow your roll F'Hawks....right now you're just a bunch of losers! 0-3 is going to really hurt! Hey now, all forums have people that talk too much smack. Good lord, go over to NDSU's forum. We are 0-2, which really stings right now; but you have to know that despite losses there are plenty of takeaways. SBU: Our offense was hideous. Yes, SBU has a terrific defense, but our offense couldn't do anything the first half. Second half we are about to score and seal the game, and our WR break his leg in 2. That is pretty damn unfortunate. Hats off to them though, they certainly contained our run game. High point; our defense looked great. SBU needed a block punt to pull this one out. BGSU: Against our offense started out extremely slow. Found a way to get it going in the second half though. Completely controlled the second half, drove down, score a TD; only reason we lost was we went for 2 instead of kicking the XP. Which on one hand seemed like the right call, being on the road, having the momentum and trying to steal a win against an FBS team. The play actually worked, we got the matchup we wanted the throw was good, the receive just couldn't haul it in. One the other hand, I would have liked to have seen us kick the XP, take it into OT and let our defense do what they did all game. Defense actually looked even better against BGSU, considering they are a much better team. Two big plays from BGSU were the difference in this game. Two losses by 5 points total. Needless to say, there is always a story behind these games. Nevertheless, we are still O-2, but to think that makes this game a pushover for USD would be asinine as well. UND's defense will be solid again. Extremely hard to run against, though I think Streveler will get his yards. I do think Bouma will be limited. Our pass defense was the big question going into the season, but has looked pretty solid (3 picks, 1 for a TD last week against Bowling Green). The key for UND will be if we can get our offense rolling early, and for all four quarters. We can't keep waiting until the second half to start playing offense. I do think Santiago will get rolling this weekend, and rack up some yards. I'm going to go 31-24 UND. But we'll see. Enjoy the game guys!

UND opens as a 4.5 point favorite 4.5 point favorites? Who have they beaten? Oh, that's right - NO ONE! Need to relax a bit, thats not a big spread, and you are on the road. Yes, we are 0-2, but you are 1-1, with a win over Weber. Look into the records a bit deeper, as Vegas would. Home field advantage plays a factor. UND is 5 pts from being 2-0, USD is 3 pts from being 0-2. Its early in the season, so we don't know enough about these teams to really call a 1-1 road team the favorite. A spread like that is basically a toss up with the edge going to the home team. If we were going to USD, I'll bet the spread would be USD as a 6.5 point favorite.

There is a very odd smug sense of superiority from UND fans regarding the Big Sky. I guess when no one else will have your football team you have to double down on that attitude. UND's sense of superiority of the Big Sky against the MVFC may be and probably is misguided. When it comes to UND vs USD the Hawks fans have every right to expect a win against the Coyotes. I expect them to win as well. Give Nielson and the Coyotes another year and a rematch in Vermillion and I see a completely different result. People can expect a 20 point Coyote win and that is fine but things just don't tend to go well in that building for the Yotes. The Coyotes offense really revolves around Streveler and if the Sioux only just contain him a little they will have a good chance. Typically teams that have good offenses and mediocre defenses tend to play much better at home. Offenses tend to click at home better than on the road and so so defenses tend to play better at home with the added energy. Great defenses tend to play well everywhere they go. It's the mediocre defenses that don't tend to pack their game with them when they play in places like the Alerus Center. We will see but my gut says UND does just about what they want to against the USD defense. I think the defense will get better with time but I don't think that time is coming quite yet this weekend. Good overview. Yes, if there are fans that find the Big Sky superior enough to warrant being smug about it, they are being ridiculous. I think a lof of UND fans get tired of hearing about the MVFC from Bison fans, especially after we got snubbed from the playoffs last season in favor of W. Illinois. Big Sky is certainly a good conference, but saying we're in a good conference so that makes us good is a really dumb arguments. That would be like Sacramento St boasting their elite because they play in the Big Sky, or Missouri St boasting they are elite because they are in the MVFC. Confidence should be more based on the team, than the conference they play in. I also agree, if we played again next year at USD, it could be a very different game. I do think our offense will finally start clicking and our running game will rack up some yards this week. That being said, I was at the Fargodome last season for the USD game, so the team needs to remember what they are capable of on the road.

Thank you for the level headed thoughts on the season so far and the upcoming game Siouxfan. This should be a good one, I don't think there is much separating these two teams.

Quick rivalry related question: Why are NDSU and supposedly SDSU so against UND joining the MVFC? I'm not sure I understand why that would be anything but good for both of them. Usually comes down to recruiting... For example, certain Big12 members didn't want to allow TCU in due to fear kids would stay home. Today Houston has a similar scenario, but the conference is in need so UH has a shot at an invite. I don't think the MVFC is in need of growth and doesn't gain a recruiting region and/or revenue so probably not a likely scenario.

Here's where the conference superiority argument stands up for USD. Over these last few years we have been bottom half (bottom feeders) in the MVFC. Yet, with the exception of Montana, the BSC's premier school, we consistently beat Big Sky teams. Why wouldn't I think we play in a superior conference? So last week we did our best to gift Weber State the game. Literally spotted them 21 points to start the game, here you go, here's 21 points. Then proceeded to fight our way back and win the game. Now, some crazy and stupid things had to happen to give Weber that lead, do you think the Yotes are going to do that two weeks in a row? I don't. UND is a mid level BSC team just like Weber State. Over the last couple of years I've seen UND get clobbered by NDSU (a team we beat on that same field just a few games later), struggle with a hapless Drake team (a team we woodshedded), have some decent conference games but also lay some eggs as well. Sure they played Bowling Green tough, but you lost to Stoney Brook. I think on a neutral field USD beats UND by 20 points because our program and team is just better at this point, since it is up in the Forks I'm giving the NoDaks an extra TD. Yotes win 31-17.

We gifted Weber 21 but they did give 7 back on a great pass to Adam Harris. UND is a little better than Weber in my mind plus we are traveling, making for a very even game in theory. Very elusive running back in Santiago, this game likely hinges on our ability to contain him. Wessel may be back and able to give us a needed boost on this front. Can't wait to see how this one plays out.

The nickname thing I understood to a point. I certainly hated to see the name go, and think the entire process the school underwent to replace it was a joke, but it was WAY to drawn out. I can see how that got obnoxious for other regional schools to hear about, I got sick of hearing about it myself. If there is one thing that frustrates my about the UND fanbase, it is the lack of support for anything outside of hockey. I love hockey, and am a huge fan myself, but I also really enjoy watching our football and basketball programs, and wish we could get more support behind them.

Quick rivalry related question: Why are NDSU and supposedly SDSU so against UND joining the MVFC? I'm not sure I understand why that would be anything but good for both of them. It all goes back to when the two XDSU's moved to D1 and the manufactured "rivalry" they created between the two of them, the phony Dakota Marker trophy. Trying to convince both fan bases that they have moved on to greater pastures with their true rivals and new D1 partners. Now it has become a way to stick it to the U's. SDSU fans try to claim that NDSU is their biggest rival as a way to stick it to USD fans, but we're not stupid, we know better than that. SDSU fans also take the side of NDSU fans when it comes to UND. They don't want UND back in the picture because, like an old girlfriend, they know who is NDSU's primary passion. NDSU fans use the "SDSU is our rival" as a way to troll UND fans same as how SDSU fans try to bait Coyote fans. Reality is that USD and SDSU are primary rivals and UND and NDSU are primary rivals and nothing can be done to change that. Now why would they want to keep UND out of the MVFC. Spite. NDSU hates UND and anything they can do to spite them they will. SDSU rides on NDSU's jock and will do anything the Bison say so they toe that company line. USD fans would love UND to join the conference. Maybe we can bring back the Sitting Bull Trophy while we're at it. Should be a condition we make for helping them get into the conference.

There was also a lot of anger by NDSU when they went 1-AA and were trying to schedule games, and UND would not schedule them. Which in turn was why NDSU would not schedule UND when we went 1-AA. I know Brad Schlossman wrote a pretty unbiased article about it all in the GF Herald last year when the school met. As a UND fan, I think UND should take the bulk of the blame there for not continuing to schedule NDSU, especially because at the time we were a D2 power, it would have been very good competition while NDSU got going. Eventually NDSU's FCS program took off, and aside from being unwilling to schedule UND when we needed games (Why would they schedule us, when we didn't schedule them), they didn't really need to schedule a unranked, non-conference opponent. Made more sense for them to try to schedule the FBS games, or the Sam Houston type non-conference games. I'm old school, and would really like to see the Dakota schools all in 1 division at some point in the future. Aside from any bad feelings or whatever else, it would be cool to have several rivalry/former rivalry games, that are all in driving distance from one another. SDSU and NDSU definitely made the most of their jump to 1-AA, and NDSU has sustained their success and an almost unbelievable rate, but there is not reason the USD and UND can't step into that ring too. The problem, it takes time to build yourself up when you have such strong programs in the region. Anyway, a little extra insight on the UND/NDSU rivalry. I'm obviously not an NDSU fan, but I don't have the pure hatred of many fans. I have some in-laws that are huge Bison fans, so it is actually pretty fun to get out there and tailgate at the FargoDome. If you haven't made it up there yet, I'd encourage you too. They have a lot of bandwagon fans, but they really put on quite an event for tailgating.
