On the non-FB side, the crowd today was...not good. I know the weather was awesome, pheasant season, harvest, etc. I wish game day production (non-FB) was louder, faster paced, and more interesting. Possibly the most interesting timeout activity was trying to figure out why the 2 kids were punting towards the Yotes & officials. Maybe make it an event you don't want to miss (more than just watching a football game) and not so stinking quiet. Student support is pathetic, absolutely pathetic. The "Home of the Coyote Crazies" label should be stripped from them until they prove they've earned it because it is an absolute farce to be calling them that now. It is a loser student body that never has given truly good support to any of our athletic teams, and don't bring up the WBB NIT run. If we have to win national titles in order to get decent student support then we are screwed. Truth is they don't deserve this team because this team is so much better than the support they get. We've always said that just win and they will show up. Well we're winning, where are they? And can they be bothered to stay for more than just a half, the ones that do show up?

We've always said that just win and they will show up. Well we're winning, where are they? And can they be bothered to stay for more than just a half, the ones that do show up? I commend the 30 or so students who did actually stay for the entirety of the game. I wish the players would come to our side of the Dome to give some fives, though, instead of just the student section which is more or less outnumbered by the team itself. Our side of the Dome consistently stays throughout the entirety of the game and cheers loudly. So what is the core of the issue here? Should we blame the students, most of whom really aren't that big fans of the program unless the team is doing something big? The WNIT had an electric student section...where are those kids now? I would guess it's not JUST the students, though. When USD plays well in a full house, the atmosphere is great. Other than that, it's a stagnant atmosphere that makes the attention span of any young millennial to want to leave and get hammered at someone's house while watching their favorite FBS team play on TV. The layout with the bleachers is just horrendous, and I know there are plans to completely replace them with new permanent seating. But it's not just that, there was absolutely NO buzz for this game. The students need to know exactly 'why' the game should be attended by them. The opener, D-Days, and the game against State every other year are obvious to the student, because there is a certain 'buzz.' I feel the marketing department could do better in letting the students know just how important this game was (i.e. Playoff implications, Top 25 ranking with a win, etc.). WIU is a solid team this year and the game this week is VERY big, yet the students won't know. They just know there is a game in Vermillion this week against a team that isn't considered a traditional rival for us. Side Note: I will not be there this week, I have a World Series to attend Though I will be finding a bar at which to watch the game in Wrigleyville.

Well deserved accolades. I like how they say Simmons had completed one pass all season. If I'm not mistaken, that was a 4th down TD in the Weber St game. Nails. I miss Bergner already. What a luxury it's been to watch those soaring punts and clutch FGs. I thought the atmosphere was flat outside the dome before the game and more flat inside the dome. So glad the team didn't let that bother them and hung in there. It absolutely was not pretty. But it's nice to be in the winning side of some of these ugly games for once- unlike the last few years. Let's keep it rolling against the next Illinois school!

I'm guessing the WIU game should be a easy win for USD.

Western Illinois will be far from easy. I am sure the Leathernecks players will have plenty to prove to their former coach and to the Coyotes. If this game was in Macolm I would probably pick WIU to win.
Just an interesting note from the last two games cumulatively against Illinois State. The Red Birds have outscored the Coyotes 70-27 and outgained them 904-526. Luckily the win loss record isn't quite so lopsided at 1-1 which is all that matters, at least for now.

Thought for 2017. Could Streveler replace Bouma at RB and keep Simmons at QB? I haven't seen anything from the back up RBs that lead me to believe we have a solid replacement for Bouma. Streveler already runs like a RB. He is athletic enough to also line up in the slot and catch the ball. Seems like we need to figure out how to get our best athletes on the field. Interested in hearing some feedback.

This is a tough one bt71. Steveler totally changes the game with his running ability from the QB position. Only problem is we have been finding out we have some pretty solid receivers on the team and Steveler isn't capable of consistently spreading the ball to them.
I personally like the thought of Simmons at QB and do think we need to be very creative to get Steveler the ball as much as possible. From the RB, slot, wildcat, etc. Straight up tailback runs, screens, slants, reverses, etc. His athleticism in the slot could make hay for the WR's with Simmons' ability to spread the ball. And I think it would open up running game by moving guys out of the box given that Simmons isn't a bad runner himself so dual threat is still there.

Made the long trip to see the game and have a few impressions to share for anyone interested:
- No doubt our best player is Bergner. As everyone knows he will be missed and in my mind is an All-American. I wonder if he gets a shot in the NFL? I also wonder who will try to fill his shoes next year.
- Towards the end of the game I thought about our tight ends and if they ever going to be a part of the game. I understand our O-line needs all the help it can get but if there was just one play where they could have caught a pass.
- I thought both QBs played pretty well the first half but the pass rush caught up with them the second half of the game. A more productive running game would have helped. The running game appears to be the weakest part of our offense.
- Looking at both teams rosters, we look to be smaller than Illinois State at nearly every position. Although I favor quickness over size any time, I think quickness can wear down over the course of a game.
- I, too was wondering not if, but when our opponent would go for the fake punt. They chose the perfect time. That's one on our coaching staff - but I think our special teams played pretty well.
- One big play that kept us in the game was toward the end when Bouma ran for a first down, practically carrying the whole Illinois defense with him. It got us a much needed first down I think.
- We were very lucky to win this game and I think crowd noise helped a lot in the second half. I have described the crowd as "small but vocal" in previous posts and they lived up to that!
- I agree with other posters that the atmosphere before the game seemed flat. The tailgating situation seemed weird and there were no sponsor booths to speak of. Hmmm.. no free beers. The groupings in the parking lot seemed a bit clatchy or something to that effect. I was very thankful we could get in to see the new BB arena. It looks like a fun place to be.
The Coyotes definitely have their work cut out for them to win this next game. Can it be done? With a large/vocal crowd it can be done. Go Coyotes!!

Aside from the Admin suddenly deciding those in the "free" tailgating area west of the Dome couldn't get in until 10am, tailgating in that area was a good time as usual. After a near mutiny of the fans who have shown up to tailgate every weekend at 8-8:30am, they did finally let us in at little after 9am. You can't make decisions like that on the morning of Game Day and expect the fans to just accept that.
I don't understand why the Admin wants to squash the fun of those who show up early and support the team week in and week out.
There was a much smaller crowd than usual in the West side tailgating area as well. Also, I'll bet there weren't more than 30-50 students the Student Tailgate area. A pathetic showing of the fan base overall for a very important game.
The football team played their butts off and won that game without support from their fellow students...

There is a clear size improvement they are going after this year. Particularly in the height department.

Did anyone else see the quotes from Illinois St's head coach after the game and take him to be a bit of an arrogant a$$?
“We’re a poorly coached team,” Spack said. “We should have ran that team out of here and we didn’t. It’s our fault, the coaches.”
He gave the Yotes no respect whatsoever for creating the turnovers and beating them...

I agree that there needs to be more effort in the marketing dept. to create buzz for the U, in Sioux Falls and Sioux City especially. I never hear anything about USD athletic events here in SF. They should be blowing up the radio and local TV with promos and announcements for upcoming games. Think about all of the opportunities we are missing with connecting to fans that want to be a part to something.
Have a foam finger give away, charlie bobble-head day, something to create a little buzz outside of the regular attendance base and get some butts in the seats. I didn't hear anything about family night at the Dome this past weekend in SF. C'mon marketing dept.
As for students, I don't know what the deal is. When I was playing in the early 2000's we had great student support, especially amongst the other athletic teams supporting each other. The halftime thing is an issue everywhere so that's not a shocker but to not show up at all is concerning. Not sure if it is a lack of connection with the student body or what but it was pretty shocking to see the low numbers of students in the stands. That was probably the worst student section I have ever seen at a USD football game.
Anyways, I agree that it was GREAT to come out of that one with a win. Probably lucky to get that one with the 2 key fumbles inside the 5 by ISUr, but that is a testament to our kids effort to make those types of plays.
Chance to get 4 Valley wins in a row this weekend, no one could have guessed we would be able to say that statement at the onset of the season.
Go Yotes!

I wasn't impressed with ISUr at all, not like I was the last time they came to Verm. I thought they were very average, if that, and it should have been Coach Nielson that offered that quote because, really, the Yotes should have ran them out of the building in the first half. Nobody sitting around me could believe that we were only up by 7 going into halftime because it felt like we were in control of that game much more than the scoreboard showed.
