Did anyone else see the quotes from Illinois St's head coach after the game and take him to be a bit of an arrogant a$$? “We’re a poorly coached team,” Spack said. “We should have ran that team out of here and we didn’t. It’s our fault, the coaches.” He gave the Yotes no respect whatsoever for creating the turnovers and beating them... What he fails to also mention is that the Coyotes played far from their best game either. If the Coyotes would have truly kept running their offense in the 2nd half like they can the Red Birds may not have even been within 2 touchdowns by then. He may not be happy with his team but the Coyotes didn't play their best either. What a whiner.

I think that if USD put as much effort into getting students to the Dome for games as they do in diligently contacting alum for donations, the Dome would be packed full every game.

I've been as critical if not more than most in the past about student involvement at games but it's pointless. The more you complain the worse it gets. I am now of the opinion to ignore the subject altogether. Let's be honest here, the non student turn out Saturday was also pathetic. And the ones there sat on their hands. The game past the first quarter somewhat dictated it, but if we are ever going to be a factor, we need to support this team game after game.
I've said it a million times, it's an event, not just a game. I got to the parking lot at 10am and had a blast. I also looked at all the emptiness of the tailgate spots east of the Dome and I get why some of you complain about it. I want to see it filled with pumped up fans. I'm not sure what you do about it, but there has to be a remedy.
Let's pack the Dome this week, and put ourselves in position to talk about the playoffs. I do think we have a shot at winning one of the last two games. I'm not writing it off.

Nice post and I could not agree more, way to go with that one. It's time to grow the fan base. They can start by allowing people to purchase season tickets at regular price. I have never seen people being charged more for season tickets than they would be if they waited to buy single game tickets. Goes against the typical train of thought. Anytime anyone is willing to buy season tickets get those babies sold and give a person a good deal for getting those tickets. Actually buying season tickets is more than just the cost of the tickets, it's getting those butts in the seats to cheer on the team. For the students, give away a scholarship but don't announce it until after the final horn. Or better yet give away 5 $100 bills and start giving them away at half time and stretch it out to the end of the game. To double down on that give the cash to the students that cheer the loudest during the game. Cash for support. Sounds a little strange but why not. Many students would probably stick for a chance at 100 bucks. I will never for the life of me understand why someone would be so crazy over a major college team such as Ohio State if they have never attended there, been there or have no ties to them. On the other hand what is more personal then cheering on the alma mater live and in person. I can understand the lackadasical attendance because of years of losing football but there are some real positive signs and not manufactured positive signs. People just need to have a sense of pride.

Coyotefan, You never cease to amaze me. One of the best yardsticks for measuring a fan base is to look at the number of season tickets that are sold. That is athletics administration 101. USD football season tickets are currently sold at a bargain price so I'm not sure how you would propose "allowing people to purchase season tickets at regular price."
I also had to chuckle at your idea for giving away all this cash as it is always easier to give away other people's money when it isn't your own. Where do you think these magic $100 bills or scholarships will come from unless you support the Howling Pack? As you wrote above, "Cash for support. Sounds a little strange but why not?"

When it comes to the general fan support this past weekend I kind of understand it, don't condone it, but understand it. Farmers in the fields, I understand that, the weather was perfect and that is their livelihood. Pheasant hunters, I don't get it. Go shoot birds some other time. But I'm not a hunter so I put more value on the football game. So looking at it from their perspective I suppose I can relate a bit.
Students, I really don't get it. I guess a ton of USD students went up to that thing they have in Brookings every year. Unbelievable to me that they would support the other school over your own. That's pretty much commonplace in South Dakota though, has been for decades. Even while we were tailgating there were USD grads of many, many years talking about how they too would go to Hobo Days every year and how their State friends would come down to D-Days. I don't understand that mentality. Of course I came here from out of state and obviously never had the opportunity to ever attend Hobo Days as I was always busy doing something else that day. I do find it interesting that it is a non-native South Dakotan (hailing from Iowa) that is more supportive of the U than those from in-state. Trust me, I'm not alone in that, other out-of-state grads I know don't understand it either.

It's not that they're going to support the Jacks, it's that most of the kids are from South Dakota and they go to see their friends of 10-15 years. It's the same for us on D-Days.

I'm an avid pheasant hunter and the weekends are the only days that will work to get a group together as everyone has jobs during the week. This is the reason I will miss the WIU game.

In no way do I buy the hunting excuse. Hunt before the game or hunt on Sunday. It doesn't have to be done during the game itself. The birds will be there all autumn long. The Coyotes are only available between 2-5 PM on Saturday's.

Now that the team is winning it's suddenly unacceptable to have another commitment on a Saturday afternoon? Glass houses CF....

In all fairness the student section was always packed in the early 2000's when one lucky student each Saturday won free tuition for that semester if they were still present in the 4th quarter.
The marketing department does need to step it up. Running the same promos they did 20 years ago with no advertising doesn't work. I've heard people multiple times use the "welcome to D1 athletics" for prices and other things. Time to start advertising and promoting it like that too.

I don't think I've ever seen the student section packed regularly through the entire season, game one to last game, for the entire game, start to finish in the last 25+ years. We've had great student crowds for individual Dakota Day, SDSU, NDSU, UND, and even UNO games going back to the D2 Days, but I don't think I've ever seen them stick around for the entire game, win or lose.
Getting students in the door to the game for any gimmick promotion other than just going to the game to support your school and support your team is going to be a losing proposition in the end. The bottom line is the USD student body needs a change in culture to where they WANT to go to the game, where they can't WAIT for Gameday, where EVERY college fooball Saturday home game is a SPECIAL EVENT.

I agree, so don't worry about them. Let's focus on ticket buying fans. No reason we can't sellout east side and put general admission on west side with students. Maybe the north end just south of the band?

The alumni need to take the lead. The students will follow only after they view it as "the cool" thing to do. We need to make it a fun environment by packing our side of the stadium. All these problems will be taken care of if 10,000 people want to pay to see the game. That is not a lofty goal and should be obtainable soon.
