As ridiculous as it is to have a braketology 3 weeks before the season starts, I would have liked to have had 2 Summit teams in there right from the start (it would speak to perceptions). But alas, SDSU has let me down yet again... It goes with the burden of not being picked to win the conference. It also an indication that the Summit could be overlooked again for the 2 team inclusion. True, but despite not being the preseason favorite this year, you would think a decade of consistent appearances and a sweet 16 run just last year would provide the Jacks a little equity in prognosticators’ minds. I guess it’s “what have you done for me lately” (this season) for us lowly mid-majors. Gotta earn it every season.

Part of me likes the recognition of Dawn, ... then I start to think, crap. More job offers. We need to keep her a secret. Actually, this kind of attention is just as good for USD as it is for Dawn individually. Well deserved on both counts.

Here's a couple of really interesting quotes from that interview:
How would you characterize South Dakota basketball?
Highly-skilled, highly competitive. What’s great about the state of South Dakota is that high school teams play with a shot clock, so the game is fun to watch when I’m out recruiting. I catch myself out of state, because every single time I’m looking up to see where the shot clock is at. Having a shot clock here helps players be ready for collegiate level play.
What do you look for in recruits ...?
... One is toughness level...That means getting rebounds, deflecting passes and staying with plays... making the simple plays... skill level.
... energy level is important to me... at least half of our kids are in some form of the medical field.
What is fun about coaching at South Dakota, and in the Summit League?
...From an academic standpoint, we are at a university that offers 200 different degrees. We recruit and retain quality young ladies. Our fan base is phenomenal. Last year we averaged over 2,400 fans per game. The roof is dropped lower than a normal arena, which intensifies the atmosphere.
...What’s amazing is how well teams (in the league) shoot the ball. We had five teams last year in top 10 percent in the country in three-pointers.
What are your goals for the Yotes?
... We have worked on refining our defense ...The Summit League is ... a conference that shoots the ball so efficiently. We’ve got to continue to find a way to guard all of those players.
How have young athletes changed since you were in college? How do you reach this new generation?
...During my recruitment, I was looking for a relationship with a coach; I was looking for a coach I’d invite to my wedding... What players are looking for in their coaches today isn’t necessarily any different.
The way it’s experienced now is different ... kids now are under more pressure than they’ve ever been before. We have middle school kids acting like they know what their career will be. In college, they are being pressured to get jobs. More than anything, young people need to be reassured. It’s critical on our generation to do this. When student athletes have that connectivity, then they can perform at a very high level relative to their own skill sets. That’s something that’s continued to evolve.
We weren’t under the same pressure these kids are. We didn’t see stat sheets after the game – we just knew if we won or lost. We didn’t hear about it online, the exposure wasn’t there. That made it a lot simpler.

I like that last question, and how Coach P responded. The question was essentially an invitation to complain about millennials, cell phones and social media. Instead, she turned it around and pointed out that they actually have it worse than she did, with regard to pressure and expectations. Nice job. That's the kind of "player's coach" attitude that many athletes and parents appreciate.
I didn't include every quote from that article, but she did talk a lot about the role of fun and balance in her team culture (along with expectations on the floor). That much should be obvious to those of us that have followed her teams.

from the interview:
Coach P on how to coach her seniors:
"This is a group that's really smart, really intelligent. We've watched more film with this team than any team I've ever coached... but at times, we've gotta get after it defensively. The first time we were a good team defensively were in the back-to-back games this weekend in Las Vegas. Prior to that... we didn't really shut people down..."
"We've gotta really get after it on the defensive side... in order to really be who we want to be this year. We're getting closer to that, but now we have a really tough challenge with Creighton, cause they're tough to shut down."

Coach P on Creighton's motion offense:
"There are teams that run motion offenses, and we are one of those teams. And we run it differently than other teams... So far we've played against:
Green Bay (runs a 4-out, 1-in motion) Drake (runs a 5-out) Missouri (runs a 5-out) Northern Illinois (runs a 4-out and 5-out)
And tomorrow we play Creighton that runs a motion offense as well. So five of our first nine opponents run motion, which is unheard of, really.
Mattick: Is it tough to defend?
P: "yeah. It's tough to defend because it's unpredictable. You don't exactly know what your opponent's going to be running at you... It's not like you can predict what's going to happen next."
"With that having been said, we've been a team (over the course of time) that's been pretty good defensively at taking you out of what you want to run when we can predict what you're gonna run. That's one of the reasons we haven't been as good defensively so far this season as we want to be. We've had a lot of our opponents that we can't predict as well, so we've just had to go out and defend, and be good doing that. That's a challenge for a lot of teams, which is why coaches run motion. It's challenging to run it, because you have to run it in a way that doesn't become predictable..."

Mattick: ...against N. Illinois you tied the school record with 17 made 3-point shots. How many times this year will you tie or break that record?
P: We have the ability to shoot the ball well... In the game against NIU, we played it intelligently, offensively. Against Missouri State we didn't do as well with that, but MSU had a lot to do with that... Against Missouri State we got the ball around the basket. We had 39 short shots around the rim. But we didn't finish those effectively. 39 shots around the rim is a lot.
Northern Illinois said 'We're not going to let you score it at the rim'. We're gonna take that away, pack the lane, ... so our players recognized that and we got good shots. We were pretty fortunate to make them, so I don't know that we'll break that record, but I do know this: We shoot an awful lot. We probably shoot 22 to 25 arc shots a game, so we're gonna continue shooting them.

From Dec 7. NCAA.com's Beth Maiman. 100 days till women's selection show. Here are 9 unranked teams you could be hearing about in March www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-women/article/2019-12-03/ncaa-womens-basketball-bracket-projected-about-100-daysSouth Dakota Out of the Summit League, South Dakota currently sits at 8-1 with the squad’s only loss to a ranked Missouri State team. The Coyotes have wins over Utah, Drake and Ohio State to add to their resume. Ciara Duffy leads South Dakota in scoring, averaging 17 points a game and shooting over 50 percent from the 3-point line. The Coyotes certainly have a chance to crack the top 25 this season and NCAA.com’s Michelle Smith has them projected as an 8-seed in her most recent bracket prediction.
