Eh, they're sports WRITERS because they can WRITE, particularly on deadline. It's not necessarily because they're particularly insightful about a particular sport (although I would say Zimmer is when it comes to baseball).
When it boils down to it they're both good guys, doing more and more work every year because of corporate cuts, who are just sports fans who can write. If you're expecting them to come to you with some kind of coach or player-level analysis on every sport at USD or SDSU you're asking too much, in my opinion. They're just giving you whatever the coaches tell them ... and everything the coaches tell them is for one reason or another.
