AD Saylor mentioned on a chat with Mick that he was in talks with a national media company and the speculation was Learfield. Congrats on the deal and hope we can ink a deal soon.

I'm pretty sure it is Learfield. I saw a rep of there's with some USD athletic dept people at one of the tailgate parties this fall.
I think I've mentioned that in another thread.

Getting Learfield would be a HUGE get for USD. I am sure they would drastically improve USD's radio coverage, which it needs right now.

Hopefully with Learfield comes a brand new play by play guy for men's basketball and football.

Actually, under a Learfield contract USD has input over the voice of the Coyotes, but not final say. I relegate it to one of those preference things, they will ask USD for who they prefer, but I don't think they have to go with the person. From what I understand, Learfield hires and fires the talent in their contracts.

Good deal in that one and can't wait to see where this one goes.

So how does that work if they would get Learfield? I know SDSU just signed with them, so are their games still on 570 or what? How would that work with the coyotes?
If this is the case, I really hope they get RJ to be the voice of the Coyotes. All along, everyone is saying we need someone who bleeds Coyote red. I totally agree and that is why I think RJ is our man.

Longtime follower, first time poster here. I would like to say I listen to a good amount of USD games on the web. I think the whole broadcasting team should be scratched.
As someone that knows Leerfield helps set up broadcasting and the broadcasters, this is the best thing for USD. RJ Patterson just doesn't measure up. He is way too unbiased in his coverage and cannot call a game both ways, which is important at the D-I level. RJ just likes to scream all of the time and I feel his research on the opposing teams isn't always on the same level. He also doesn't ask the toughest questions. He is a good guy for D-II and NAIA, but this is Division I, so I feel the broadcasts should be Division I please.

I know RJ reads the board. I like RJ best for his commentary and think he would be a great color guy and wouldn't mind him in tandom with another play by play guy. I think USD should go after a totally new guy that is still in his prime like Jim Olander. He is probably near 40, has plenty of energy and does a great play by play. I am sure he loves where he is now but if he can get a raise with USD and Learfield in tandom that would personally be my guy.
I believe USD/Learfield should choose their play by play man just as they go about making their other hires. Have a few candidates, have tryout and interviews and let the best man/woman win.

Yeah but like you guys say, you want someone who bleeds Coyote red. That is RJ. They may take some candidates and try them out, but who are they going to get that bleeds Coyote red? No one more than him!

One thing that really annoys me about Swain is his post game interviews with Dave Boots. Isn't the point of a post game interview to get the comments of a coach regardless of what happens in the game. There was one game where Boots came on after a loss and Swain basically cut the interview to just a few words and basically said that was enough because it was a loss. Lose or win don't we as Coyote Fans want to hear the opinions of our coach. I know I do, win or lose, heartbreaking loss or heartstopping win.
redwhiteandyote is right on the money with his comments. We are moving in a new direction and should expect the very best with everything that is done. We should consider all options for a play by play guy. Pay the money it takes to get a stud because I know for me it's very important who is the voice of the Yotes.
As much as I critisized Culhaine and liked Tom Frederick in his day both were good and made me want to bring my headphones to the game to listen along. With Kevin rain or shine I was always interested to hear how he called the game. He wasn't always perfect but he was interesting to listen to. Now, not so much. Bringing my headphones with me to the dome used to be an essential part of my gameday belonging, now they are just an afterthought. I actually would rather listen to the opposing announcer or hope that the game was on TV or something. Bottom line after 2.5 years I definately want another path. Ouch.

Yeah I remember that post game interview too. I was kind of shocked like what the heck just happened? I still think it is important to have someone doing the games that gives a crap about the college, team, and the athletes. Someone that actually knows alot about that college and that team and is a Coyote fan at heart. I know this was in a thread way back when about if an announcer should be a homer or not. I think to a certain extent they for sure should be. They should really be a true Coyote fan or bleed Coyote red.
I really think that one thing that needs to change no matter if they go with Learfield or stay where they are, there needs to be a longer pregame and postgame show. There are times I barely get out to my vehicle and they are about off the air! Come on man!

No one more than him! You need more than just bleeding red, you also need to broadcast well, something that is starting to pass Mr. Patterson by. It seems through his broadcasts that he is more concerned about being a homer than broadcasting a good game. Mr. Patterson has the ability, he is just concerned about saying crazy and loud things and thinks the refs are always against USD.
