Culhane had no business calling USD games at the end. Not only did I think his broadcasts started to lack at the end, but from a business end of things, he wasn't consistently paying some of his employees. In fact, one of him was about ready to take him to court.
Honestly, Kevin started to hold USD hostage with his contract demands and chewed out Nielsen for allowing the student station for broadcasting USD volleyball games even though it wasn't in his contract. He was way too unprofessional for Division II at the end, let alone Division I.

I think he does a great job at what he does. Is he a homer? To a certain extent. Thats what we need. Does he say some loud things? Sure. It's better than being all monotone and boring as hell! Back a few years, turn on 100.5 and listen to Augustana's announcers. That was monotone and boring! RJ gets into it. It doesn't get any better than a kaboom!

I will say this much. Sometimes people need to step away from the pipe and take off the red goggles. USD is D1 now and everything they do should be well thought out. I make it a point to remove all biases, take off all USD clothes and look at things from an outsiders perspective. Everyone should do that once in awhile because looking in from the outside can often times be the best advise. Learfield would be that "looking in for the outside" that in my opinion would be great.
If Learfield takes over they will certainly make recommendations and the first one should be to totally redo the radio coverage from A to Z. Maybe RJ can be retained in some capacity (maybe retained on women's broadcasts) but Swain need to go plain and simple. I think RJ's energy and love for the Yotes can be used in some aspect but I just don't think that is of the voice of the Yotes. We need someone that is knowledgable, fair, unbiased and shows alot, I mean alot of energy towards his job. We need to know that what is being broadcasted is well thoughtout but also the truth. I don't want to hear homer announcers complain that the Coyotes are getting robbed on every call. It gets old and gives me the impression that i really don't know what is going on.
If Learfield takes over USD needs a way better situation with coaches shows. I don't think Boots has been on a TV show on midco all year. I think the football team did about 2 or 3 shows all year unless I missed some of them. There is no reason why that should not be happening every week from at least September through March.

Damn, look at this at least 4 Yotes fans all posting at the same time at 1:30 in the morning on a week night. Agree with each other or not this is the progress that we need to continue to make.

I am pretty sure that they had a coaches show on midco every week during football season. If not all, I am sure it was at least 8 of them. I saw way more than 2 or 3.
With the Learfield thing, I guess we will see. I guess we shouldn't really jump to conclusions yet anyway. Nothing is final so who knows what will happen. I am just giving my opinion if it would happen that RJ would be a good fit. I know you give your opinion too Coyote Fan. Like I said, lets wait and see if this Learfield thing actually goes through.

David Sayler has done as much in less than 6 months than the past AD's have done in the past 20 years.
Sayler has a can do attitude and I like it. Most of the admins said that a new arena was a mid to long term goal, such as in 10-20 years down the road. That included Joel Nielson Sayler is here and 6 months later we are talking about having a new facility to play hoops up and functional potentially as soon as 2 years from now.
When it comes to decisions like the play by play lets just let Learfield or Sayler make that call. Obviously Sayler knows what he is doing for the most part.
IN SAYLER WE TRUST!!!

Oh and another thing I agree with you on Coyote Fan is with Boots or Williams doing a coaches show on midco? Not sure why they haven't done any of them.

I agree with you on Sayler. We will see what he comes up with. See if this takes place for sure.

I am always starving Coyotes and I just simply can't get enough of it. Maybe that is why I am always going balistic and demanding more and more and more. I don't get why people don't get into the D1 thing alot more. If there are 500 people in a high school gym to watch West Central vs Harrisburgh there should be easily 5,000 people in the dome watching Charlie Westbrook fly over a defender and put up a huge flush into the opponents basket. Since we can't seem to figure out why people don't appreciate that maybe Learfield can (ok I am being a bit sarcastic there) I don't think we can get flying dunks in a high school game. That is why I go to USD games and not bother seeing a slow high school game. It's just so much better to watch. With the product that USD and SDSU put on the court there is no reason why both schools shouldn't have at least 5,000 in the stands for every game, especially weekend games. OK starting to get off topic a bit, sorry.

Until Midco Sports is made available to other cable providers and maybe even DISH/DirectTV, it is not a long term solution. Many parts of SD and none of NW Iowa & NE Nebraska have access to Midco Sports.

Iceman - Learfield is not a radio station, so SDSU games will be on the same radio stations as before. If USD goes with Learfield, it would be the same. That doesn't mean they wouldn't switch or add radio stations at some point, that may happen. But SDSU is not going to switch radio stations WNAX can be heard in Mexico for crying out loud (exaggerating a little), and I would imagine USD would not either. We can only hope USD would be able to add radio stations to cover the broadcasts. From what I hear you can't get games to come in at Sioux City, even Dakota Dunes. Whatever happens, this would be good for our overall production and media outlets.

For a team of announcers. I think the color guy can be more of a homer while the play by play guy needs to call it straight and be that counter to the color guy, someone to keep him honest. I don't know where this idea came from that announcers for the home school can't be homers. Listen to Iowa or Nebraska games, the Vikings or Chiefs, Twins or Cubs, the announcers are always pulling for the team they are covering, which I think is OK. The difference is, and where this line gets blurred, is they have to be honest in their broadcasts when it comes to calling the action and commenting on officials and the calls they make.
Perfect example of this was Ron Santo. Everyone in the country knew he was pulling for the Cubs during his broadcasts. The emotion he showed in the booth could be felt through the radio. But if there was a close play and the call went against the Cubs he would call it straight, might bemoan it with an "Ah Jeez" or a "C'mon" but the picture was painted clearly. Pat Hughes helped to balance things out as well.
USD can't expect to get a team that caliber, that was a professional crew, but something in that mold is not out of the question.

USDLaw, I read somewhere that SDSU was keeping their relationship with WNAX (they'd be fools to leave that station, and yes, on a clear night I think you can get that station in Mexico). Learfield will assist them in adding new stations though.
USD has got to expand their broadcast network and they need a flagship station that carries decent pre and postgame coverage and at the very least a midweek coaches/call in show dedicated to USD athletics. I would nominate ESPN radio 99.1 out of Sioux Falls. Can easily get that station in Vermillion and into NW Iowa, SW Minnesota. I listen to it daily and they do have an afternoon local show.
