The problem with ESPN 99.1 is that it already provides sports. Why is that bad? Well because execs that own that many stations want to drive up programming to other stations which is why B102.7 broadcasts the games, to drive up listenership to that station. Sounds dumb right? Well, it is and it isn't. It will stay on 102.7 probably, but Leerfield can help USD expand radio coverage.

I'll just say it. The B102.7 sucks, plain and simple. Little pre or post game coverage and you can barely get the broadcast in Vermillion.
I hope we dump that station as soon as possible.
The benefits to being on a sports radio station is that people who are interested in sports listen to those stations daily. The station is preset into the dial and doesn't need to be searched for. They will hear commercials all week reminding them of when the USD game can be heard. Also, sports talk radio stations that carry a schools games tend to promote and talk about that school because they want to drive people to listen to the game so they promote the product. ESPNRadio does this constantly with the NFL and NBA.
What incentive does the sports talk radio stations in Sioux Falls have to talk about USD right now? Last time I heard USD talked about in depth was when the BSC/Summit/MVFC decision was happening. Not much since.

The Sioux Falls stations do a very poor job at keeping up with USD. ESPN 99.1, well I don't get it here in Mitchell, but you would think Warren Swain would have something daily on it but he didn't when I used to listen to it.
John Gaskins doesn't care about USD at all and Craig Mattick only likes the big stuff. When USD is in the Summit and MVFC then Mattick will care, but Gaskins only cares about Nebraska and national sports.

When 99.1 ESPN started up a couple of years ago I thought they were the natural fit to carry the Yotes, since they are owned by the same company as 102.7. But I have read that a lot of ESPN affiliates have left ESPN as ESPN puts too many restrictions on local programming.
Whoever originates the broadcast we need a network of stations that provide the broadcast to all of SD and the corners of Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota adjacent to SD. Would love to get WNAX away from SDSU.

I totally forgot about this. Is it possible USD moves back to 1570 KVTK Vermillion/Yankton. The station is now owned by 5 star communications (Jeff Fuller). Now that Kevin Culhaine is out I wonder if USD programming will be back? kvht.com/5-Star-Communications/8786988

WNAX might have a huge range but in all honesty does it really matter if they can just get to Omaha and Rapid City or all the way to Texas. When I have turned into WNAX for a Jacks update I have run into several occassions where there is alot of static on the air, moreso than other AM stations. That is from open areas in my car. AM is nice and reaches far but the quality of broadcasts is better on the FM side. WNAX is about the quantity of viewers it reaches but the quality lacks in my opinion.
With that said B 102.7 sucks in just about every way it can. It's been over 2 years and the station hasn't even come close to ironing out all the bugs. There are frequent losses of connection to the broadcasters and sometimes for minutes at a time. Just this saturday alone there was a confusing moment at the end of the post game show where the broadcast appeared to come back live but instead of getting Swain it came back to some wierd background noise of basketball sounds with no voice. It sounded like the conclusion of the post game show was over a cell phone. That is just one occurance of many annoying issues that B 102.7 has with games. That isn't even to get into the nonquality of the broadcast itself.
There is almost nothing about the radio station that hints that they are dedicated or really wanting to fully commit to Coyote Athletics.

Would love to get WNAX away from SDSU. There was a year or two when SDSU and WNAX parted company and WNAX broadcast USD games (I think that was sometime in the mid- 1980s).

Coyote Fan,
I have never had any problems with WNAX's broadcasting or experiencing static, ever. This goes back to when I was a teenager listening to Twins games driving from Sioux Falls to Rock Rapids, or even Rock Rapids to Ames for college. It started to cut out just before Ames. Just never had a problem with it any radio honestly.

Maybe it's just me but there have been some recent instances where there was definately an issue with static or crackling. Maybe I was just in a dead zone I am not sure but I have noticed this more than once.

Learfield sports has a business plan that basically names one prominent station in an area and names them the "Home of the Coyotes", and then, reach out to stations with less draw and they become affiliates. That's where they make their money by connecting the dots with stations strategically placed throughout the market area of the University.
The problem Learfield is going to have is finding that FLAGSHIP STATION. SDSU has WNAX and that is a great station to build a network around. I believe that Learfield will go south (Sioux City) to find that station to lead, and then put together a network of 8-12 stations carrying the Coyotes.
Learfield must have reasonable expectations it can be done as they are investing some bucks into the department.

Yoteforever,
Do you have information that the Learfield thing is a done deal. Your last sentence makes it seems like "is" instead of "if". Hopefully an agreement is reached by the end of the basketball season. I think USD is located in a really good geographic area. For as small as Vermillion is the 2 hour circle includes a nice population. Probably moreso than what any of the other Dakota Schools have.
As far as the radio station regardless of who takes the position of flagship I just want a major dedication shown to USD. I want USD to be a top priority not an "oh by the way we have a Coyote game on but when it's over we'll make sure we get back to music right away". I want equipment that works. It would be nice if the station had some sort of history in broadcasting of live sporting events.
I have an interesting thought. Since USD has this huge Mass Communications Department what is stopping them from starting their own station. Have USD invest some money if need be and have it be able to safely reach at least 120 miles in every direction. If not have USD work with an established station and help invest into making the coverage second to none. Give it the scope of coverage that Culhaine used to give but have the actually play by play of games be of higher quality than USD has even had.
I really think Sayler and/or Learfield will once and for all get it right this time around. Find someone that wants to broadcast USD sports, not someone that "has to".

USD does have a radio station. The problem is it doesn't get out of Vermillion, which is very typical of a college station. It costs way too much money to get a tower with that reach, and Lubbers wasn't good at bringing money into the program, something I think Van Maanen will do because she is actually personable.
