Having the Drake game first means we've had a chance to work out kinks, 62 guys have seen live action, and we can already boast a road win. Bowling Green presents a good opportunity to earn our 2nd FBS win in program history.
Last season Bowling Green started 1-8, then won 3 in a row to end the year at 4-8. Last week against Michigan State the Falcons lost 35-10 while only mustering 212 yards and 3 points on offense. The only thing that went right for BGSU was the turnover battle, which was 3-1 in their favor and included a scoop-and-score. Michigan State's MO under Dantoni has always been stringent defense and it showed here.
Bowling Green is a pass happy team with a crappy defense. We are going to be able to move the ball on these guys, but aren't going to put up 77 again. Probably more like 28-35 points. I think the single biggest factor for us in this one will be our secondary. Defend the pass well and I think we get the upset.
A win is realistic, and it would be put me all in on the playoff hype. Can't wait to see how we turn out in this one.

People make too much about playing Drake prior to Bowling Green. Is it really to our advantage to have Drake first. I think the Coyotes probably learned a lot less about themselves then Bowling Green did after playing Michigan State. Bowling Green would have had the same disadvantage the Coyotes would have if the game was played this weekend. IMO playing the FBS game first actually increases the chances of the upset.
When Bowling Green played UND last year they got the bad UND team. The Hawks were not playing well at all until their 4th quarter against the Coyotes and that was the turning point for their year and they never looked back. Point is if their bad version was able to take Bowling Green to the wire I would certainly think the Coyotes will be more than able to play with them. Hearing that Bowling Green is a pass happy team makes the chances even better for upsetting them.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Coyotes won but I see a game where the Coyotes outplay them and out gain them but end up having something crazy happen against them and drop the game. I will go 40-37 Bowling Green with the Coyotes missing a late tying field goal attempt.

Just read their game thread on the Michigan State game. The posters just railed on their QB. I hope they're right, but know very well just how dramatically negative message board posters can be.

Had some time to watch the Bowling Green vs Michigan State game and obviously watched the USD vs Drake game in person and then the replay. Here are my thoughts about the upcoming game:
Bowling Green has a 6'5'' 235lb QB that has the ability to make all the throws when he is not pressured. When pressured he was off target. Solid OL (like a top MVFC OL), very fast receivers, and a RB with some burst that can turn the corner and hurt a defense. They like to run a tempo offence similar to USD. Defensively I was impressed with their run defense. Michigan State got most of their rushing yards from the QB scrambling. BG held the MSU RBs in check most of the game. Solid DL and DEs. LBs all look very solid - OLBs are on the larger side (compared to the MVFC) - 230-240ish and have some mobility. DBs were in position and contesting the MSU receivers. Have some hitters in the secondary - our WRs will want to tighten up their pads for this one.
Their Punter is a Stud and can really flip the field. He was a Ray Guy award finalist last year and looks to be again this year. Their FG kicker obviously has a big leg if you saw the video that went viral earlier this year of him hitting a 53 yard FG to get his scholarship. That was cool.
This team is in their second year with their new HC. Last year he was running his system with players not as good of a fit for it (sound familiar?). He has transferred in some key pieces (the best one IMO is a receiver) and also some speedy recruits - skilled but inexperienced.
The biggest keys to this game IMO will be QB pressure. Can USD pressure the BG QB? If we do not get pressure on him he will carve up our defense. If we can sack him a few times, get some big hits on him and get him nervous, he will throw some INTs and incompletions. The reverse is also true. If our OL can give Streveler time to throw, I think our offense will move the ball nicely. This does concern me - I think against Drake there were times we were not getting enough pressure on their QB and I also think there were times our OL was letting too much past them causing pressure on Streveler/Simmons. This BG team is much better on both sides of the ball than Drake and if USDs lines do not take a step forward this week, it will be a long night.
I do not think our OL and RBs will be able to have much success running the ball against this defense. If BG plays like they did against MSU though and does not try and contain Streveler - Streveler will have some huge runs. Perhaps they will underestimate him initially and then be forced to adjust. I will predict they will underestimate him and he will burn them in the first half with some long runs.
I view this just like playing a top-level MVFC team on the road that has significantly more depth than our level. This will be a tall order for the Coyotes, but winnable for sure. USD will need to create some turnovers and have a positive turnover margin of about +2 to win this game.
Good luck Coyotes and Safe travels to all those making the trip!

Grain of salt, but I see the line opening with BGSU as 7.5 point favorites. Who ever thought we'd get such a narrow spread against an FBS school?

Really good interview and comments from the Bowling Green HC Mike Jinks. If you listen, you will get a good idea of how he views his team and how he views the Coyotes. When you click on the link scroll down to the bottom of the page and you can just watch the HC's comments. link

Really looking forward to this matchup. For the first time every, I am with CF on this one. That game really did not tell us much beyond how bad Drake is. We won by 70 points because of the style of our play. The thing that scares me about our style of play is how easily teams can get back in the game with us and the pressure it puts on our defense. We can score in a minute or less because of our QBs and receivers, but we can also go 3 and out in 12 seconds. Bowling Green is going to be like playing a Youngstown State, NDSU, or SDSU as far as talent goes. These are the types of games we have to go in knowing we should win. Take a look at the computer ratings of Missouri Valley teams vs BG : North Dakota State - 49 South Dakota State - 74 Youngstown State - 89 Northern Iowa - 101 Illinois State - 102 Western Illinois - 113 Bowling Green - 114 South Dakota - 125

I know these are just computer rankings, but this definitely says something about our conference and our opponent this week. Take what BG head coach said to the media about them vs Michigan State. I'm paraphrasing but it was something along the lines of...."It's not just about believing you belong on the field with your opponent. It is about a mentality that you are on the field to beat them. That is something as coaches we can instill in our players." This should be the yotes mentality against BG. We are not going to be able to win every Missouri Valley game this season. We just don't have the depth to do that. We need a win like this against an FBS opponent to help our case out come playoff time.

I heard that the game will be played on a projector in downtown Vermillion during Ribs, Rods, and Rock and Roll.

So If the team wins...which i very much think they will...it'll make everybody's night, they'll show up in force for the home opener in Vermilion against North Dakota and cheer their team on??? The team needs their fans as much as the fans need the team to win!!! Band wagon jumpers welcome!!! The more the merrier!!! Go Yotes!!!

The strongest OLineman Nate ever faced was on his HS team and that was Ben Bredisen who started for Michigan in his 3rd game last year...so he'll be solid against Bowling Green.

I'd hate for it to take that 2017 national championship you guaranteed me in Des Moines for the fans to start packing the Dome on a regular basis.
