Its worth mentioning that Simmons went like 11/30 in that game. Looked it up, 13/30 was the mark. 43% is not a good percentage. Simmons has an absolute cannon and is quick on his feet. I have faith that he will be a great leader on this team next year. I was at that game, too. I agree that he has good footwork, arm strength, and I would add: a very quick release. However, I'd like to see better accuracy. There are a lot of factors that could have affected his completions, so I won't totally write him off. I saw a few dropped passes, and its hard to have great chemistry with your receivers when you are the backup. Mike Leach had a great quote about not being able to improve a player's accuracy:

That Weber State game. Simmons came in and made an incredible throw over the middle on 4th down for a TD while we were down 14-21 points. Incredibly clutch play from someone who was getting their first collegiate snaps.
He's shown flashes, but still has a lot to learn and I'm sure he knows that. He's already proven serviceable and has the tools to be a great player. Why are we even talking about this?

Would rather this place be dead? Talk away, off tangent if you like. Rather that than a ghost town of a board.
This place is fast becoming one of the more active boards in the FCS. That's a good thing.

As a senior as an all-state QB at Lewis Central HS in Council Bluffs, IA, Simmons passed for over 2000 yds with a 57% completion percentage and had 25 TDs vs 5 Ints plus rushed for over 1000 yds. I'll take those numbers any day! Also participated in 4 sports and had a 3.9 GPA!

Pass 2662 yrds 26 TD's / 4 Int 68.8% completion % Rushed 1276 yrds 22 td's
All-State abnd Academic All-State selection in IL - played in one of the states top conferences Graduated in 3.5 yrs.
Add in his jr season Strev accounted for 91 total TD's in his HS career.
Still not sure how MN gave up on him.

The following isn't an argument made specifically for or against Simmons the individual.
I do believe in general that I like when a quarterback comes in and starts early in his career rather than sitting and not starting until his junior or senior year. With the type of offense that the Coyotes run and the experience and intelligence that it takes to run I would rather a quarterback begin his career as a starter either his freshman or sophomore year. That way the team is not starting over with a new quarterback every year or two. Obviously if the upper class men quarterback is clearly the better player you have to go with him but if it is close at all I would rather get the younger guy in there so the team can have more time with him before having to start over again. The SDSU quarterback still has one year left as the man and he has been there forever it seems. He started playing quite a bit his freshman year.

and will have 3 degrees after he leaves USD. Pretty hard to not respect that. Back on topic, I enjoy the articles by Hero Sports. With Sam and Brian I think they have watched most of the teams and have a pretty good insight on the league unlike a lot of other sources. I admittedly don't watch much of other conferences, so I will have to take some of their views with a grain of salt. They have confidence in the Yotes, now it's time they need to prove it. It's a new season, let's start hot again 5-0.

Strev has obviously had a great HS career and spectacular numbers while at USD and academic achievement! Great to have two high quality individuals and QBs on the team!!

If there is another QB on the roster capable of beating out Simmons then I am very impressed with what we have recruited at that position. I think Simmons is pretty dang good. The kid only came off the bench after Strev was injured the first series of the SIU game and won. Keep in mind he was probably getting majority second string reps throughout the week and still led the team to a 49-0 victory, this coming off a road loss to ISUr and the distractions of the player suspensions. I would say he is a pretty capable QB.. I had the chance to spend about an hour with a player one year removed from the team while on a road trip this year for the Yotes. He told me that he and every player he has stayed in touch with believe and often comment how good Simmons is, and are of the opinion that as good as Streveler is (tremendous leader, elite speed, elite toughness) - Simmons is enough of a better thrower than Streveler that he is just as hard for a defense to defend. He also commented that defenses will play Simmons differently than Streveler and that because of that Simmons may actually be as effective running. He put in in perspective saying that in his opinion Streveler is the best running QB in the MVFC. He said it may be close for a number two between several others. His belief was that Simmons has more of a smooth running style like TC and we could expect Simmons to run like him. He went on to tell me that just like defenses now are paranoid that Streveler will rip off a 75 yard TD run on virtually any down and distance - after some time of scouting Simmons they will realize he has a cannon and accuracy at an elite level and will have to cover the entire field. By being forced to do that, the receivers will have some match-up advantages. His prediction for what it was worth was that the MVFC and fans at large will be surprised when they expect a huge drop-off because a player of Streveler's caliber graduates, and the offense is just as effective in 2018 as this year. He did mention that he would rather try and tackle Simmons than Streveler. (I would have guessed that) Was interesting to hear his perspectives. I have to think that conference opponents hoping for our demise next season because Streveler is gone are going to be sadly disappointed at how good Simmons is. As always, great stuff obc.

usdyotes--Yes all the QBs the Yotes have had great HS stats otherwise they wouldn't be here. The difference with Simmons is he's led the Coyotes to two Valley victories and threw a crucial 4th down TD pass in another when Strev was injured!

The real improvement of this team will be the continued development of the OL and DL and the further improvement of our defense - LB play needs to be improved and I believe will. (Anyone have an update on the health of Jake Matthew? - he was a great get out of Omaha North and has been plagued by injuries the first two years. My goodness we could have used him this year!) Next year teams are going to be surprised by the Yotes overall improvement across position groups. I will predict top 8 seed.

We have several good QBs on the roster as well as great players in other positions and the staff is doing a great job of bringing in more and more high caliber players that will bring us to the top of the FCS.
I think we can put any further debate to rest as now is not the time for it. Strev is going to be the guy to lead this team to playoff success this year and bring a championship home to USD.
The season is now 0-0. We need to go to 1-0 this Saturday and start the march through the playoffs. It's a whole new season, the past is over and it does not matter anymore.
