The Yotes won their first ever FCS playoff game and are rewarded with a trip to Huntsville, Texas to play 6 seed Sam Houston State at 2 PM Saturday, December 2 (the first December game for this team since 1986). Sam Houston State finished 2nd in the Southland and only has one loss on the year, coming to the 4 seed. The teams now have a common opponent in Nichols. SHSU beat them at home 66-17. We're going to have to play a lot better this time around to win this one.
Let's stay undefeated in the playoffs! Go Yotes!

Judging by our one common opponent I'm not sure how we can look at this game as anything other than the yotes being a sizable underdog. We have obviously underestimated how good some of the teams from other conferences are. Most everyone acted like we were going to roll right over Nichols and some wondered if we should rest Strev. Thank God we forced four turnovers. I think we can beat Sam Houston, but it certainly would be considered an upset. I realize you can't look at one common opponent and make your spread based on that alone. I'm not saying we should be 42 point underdogs like our games vs Nichols would suggest. In fact in the Dome I would probably expect us to win. But on the road, for the second week in a row, with SH resting all week, I would say we are about 13 point underdogs. Hopefully we don't get bent over by the refs again like yesterday. We won't be able to over come that against these guys.

Running the numbers on SHSU game I come up with:
PREDICTED WINNER: SHSU SPREAD: -2 TYPICAL SCORE: SHSU 35 USD 33 OVER/UNDER: 68 I'm not giving any home field. This is nothing new for USD. It looks like Nicholls stadium, just bigger.
The teams are almost identical with balanced attacks and defenses that produce similar results. The big difference between these teams is the efficiency of the BearKat offense in scoring points. They average 45 points/game while giving up 28. This is no fluke and the statistics show that. They also show USD is good enough to slow them down on offense and exploit their defense just enough to keep it within 2. The Yotes needs to, and will, find 3 points someplace so I'm for sure taking USD and all the points I can get.

66-17, they put up 619 yds against Nicholls 307, yea, that is a little worrisome but it was much earlier in the season and it was a bre-out game for a break-out offense. Time of possession was even so it was probably a lot of big plays. I see they scored 5 though the air. Thats a clue for the Yotes as to game plan.
I don't disagree with your 13, I hope a lot more see it that way. That Nicholls game tells me that if this one gets out of hand it will probably be all BearKats. I dont think that will happen. They have done well with the BSC but have faltered in past years coming up short.

Anybody know anything about SHS? I know JB is a very good QB but that’s all I know. I watched a replay of the SHSU vs Houston Baptist game (last regular season game of the year) on ESPN3 last night late. HBU is a bad team that finished 1-10 so it may not be a good gauge, but here are my take-aways: Elite QB (passing). He is very accurate and poised. 6'3'' 225 and not exceptionally mobile but slides well in pocket. He will hit open receivers and has tremendous range - not afraid to throw it deep. WR crew is deep and talented. They have an all-star type receiver that is built like our Shamar Jackson - perhaps a little bit bigger. He broke their career touchdown receiving record in that game and has some great hands. He looks like the QB's favorite target. There are several talented receivers however. Their RBs looked small but have great burst. The looked more shifty rather than elite speed. The accuracy of the QB and the strong WR group will be a major challenge for our pass defense. Will need to get to the QB and cause pressure. If not, it will be hard to keep these WRs covered consistently. On defense, USD will be facing another athletic front. I would put them a notch below what I saw from Nicholls. They are fast and aggressive. They showed multiple fronts against HBU. Sometimes they had a 4 man front with what looked like two traditional LBs and a walk up Safety. They also showed a 3-3 type look and brought pressure from that look every time I saw it. The weakest part of their defense is their DBs IMO. I think we can challenge them and win one-on-one battles. This will take USD's best effort and a clean game to get a victory here. They will score points on us, but I anticipate they will also struggle to consistently stop the Coyote offense. The one game SHSU lost this year was on the road at Central Arkansas. In that game UCA was very balanced between rushing and passing. I think that will be important for USD in this game. I think the easier money to be made will be for USD to throw, but I think wearing them down by being more balanced will reap rewards late in the game (and I think this will be the type of game that will be won or lost in the 4th quarter.) If we can be facing a worn down SHSU defense in the fourth and our defense is slightly fresher - I really like our chances. Cannot have bad turnovers - every possession will count against a team like this that scores so frequently. Will be worth the price of admission and I just booked my flight. Anyone Yote fans that would like to tailgate or meet for beers/food before the game, just PM me. Go Yotes!

I see a lot of zone defense being played against SHS. If SHS bread n butter is through the air we will be fine. Our struggles have been the run game in our latest losses. I wonder if Coach Yelk will play more cover 2 this game?

Where can we get Sam Houston tickets at? Should be able to buy through the USD ticket office online starting Monday through either Tuesday or Wednesday. Can usually then be picked up at the game at the Will Call window. Check out the goyotes.com website for updates.

Just saw what I believe is the five dimes line Sam by 21.... Sam 56 SD 35 Interesting considering many of SHSU's games were a closer spread than that. I would take that action.
