That board is a cesspool, but if the common results between USD and SHSU held then those guys would be right.

The Any Given Saturday pro boards almost unanimously have us getting slaughtered on Saturday. Several posts are calling for a 21 point win by the Bearcats. I'm heading down to Houston and look forward to making those keyboard warriors eating crow. Go yotes!!! I read the board and what they are all failing to realize is that both defenses are playing each others offense. With that being said it is the defensive scheme's and strategy that are going to win the game. USD coaches will take in to consideration the players they have playing defense and devise a defensive game plan. I will assume that the SHSU coaches will do the same. My guess is that our coaching staff is going to prevail....they are smart. On offense we are going to have to get the running game going in order to win. I predict the game will be won in the 4th quarter and USD will be the winner 38-35

Couldn't agree more about establishing the running game. Last week we essentially abandoned the running game making the offense one dimensional. Throwing the "50/50" ball (as the biased announcers referred to it last week) is not the best game plan.

STATS GAME PREDICTION www.fcs.football/cfb/story.asp?i=20171129095915660827804&ref=rec&tm=&src=FCSFCS Playoffs Second Round The Matchup - South Dakota (8-4) at No. 6 seed Sam Houston State (10-1) Kickoff - 3 p.m. ET at Bowers Stadium (12,593) in Huntsville, Texas Coverage - ESPN3 Series - First meeting Players to Watch - South Dakota: QB Chris Streveler (283 of 427, 3,614 yards, 27 TDs, 6 INTs; 669 rushing yards, 10 TDs), RB Michael Frederick (137 carries, 694 yards, 7 TDs; 21 receptions), DE Darin Greenfield (57 TT, 18 1/2 TFL, 8 Sacks), DT Taylor Lambert (35 TT, 8 1/2 TFL, 4 1/2 Sacks), FS Andrew Gray (77 TT, 5 1/2 TFL, 5 PBU); Sam Houston State: QB Jeremiah Briscoe (258 of 456, 3,893 yards, 37 TDs, 11 INTs), RB Corey Avery (139 carries, 839 yards, 11 TDs; 21 receptions), WR/RS Davion Davis (61 receptions, 990 yards, 14 TDs; 2 punt return TDs), WR Nathan Stewart (57 receptions, 1,305 yards, 11 TDs), NT P.J. Hall (40 TT, 15 TFL, 6 Sacks, 4 BK) The Skinny - The two most productive offenses in the FCS square off, with Sam Houston first in total offense (544.6 ypg) and scoring offense (45.9 ppg) and South Dakota second overall (514.2 ypg) as well as fifth in scoring (37.8 ppg). South Dakota is back in the Southland Conference after beating Nicholls 38-31 in the first round. The Streveler-vs.-Briscoe QB matchup is the best of the Round of 16 - both quick-strike TD makers. The dual-threat Streveler ranks second in the FCS in total offensive yards per game (356.9) and Briscoe is first in passing yards per game (353.9), with Briscoe No. 1 over Streveler in points responsible for (240 to 222). Briscoe, the 2016 STATS FCS Walter Payton Award winner, has more offensive weapons, with Davis, Avery and Stewart in double figures with touchdowns. Streveler spreads the ball around quite well, with Shamar Jackson and Brandt Van Roekel his go-to receivers. Both defenses like to get after the opposing quarterback, particularly USD's Greenfield and Sam Houston's Hall and DE Chris Stewart. Hall, who moved from defensive end to nose tackle during his senior season, holds the FCS career record with 81 tackles for loss. The Bearkats have scored on four returns (three punts and one kickoff). Up Next - The winner will play Kennesaw State or No. 3 seed Jacksonville State in the quarterfinals on Dec. 8 or 9. Prediction - South Dakota won its first-round game following a late defensive stop. They won't get one this time in another game where the offenses should go up and down the field. Sam Houston State 38-33.

Streveler is the X Factor/equalizer who is difficult to prep for. Dual threat beast that doesn’t require much space to take to the house... My take is the O will have to be on point; slug it out TD for TD if necessary. Consistent pressure from the DLine will go a long way to help the DBs... I’m sure the staff will find creative ways to pressure Briscoe. Cream rises to the top...getter done!

Would be curious if the low sack totals on SHSU are a result of great protection or quick drop and ball out before any rush can get to him. If the latter, then I’m not sure if blitzing even helps.

It is a combination of things from my limited film. The QB is very good at moving in the pocket with his eyes downfield. He has a quick release too. We have to keep pressuring him and even if not quite sacking him - put him on the ground. If USD can do that all game it will have a cumulative effect. I think this game will be decided in the fourth quarter. To win, I think USD must hit the QB often and keep him under pressure. The defense also must make sure they are one-dimensional and shut the run down completely. On offense - be balanced and have success running the ball. We have our best chance to win if late in the game their QB is battered and their defense is exhausted from getting ripped on the ground for long demoralizing drives. Tough test, but winnable. Last game will serve the Coyotes well in getting then ready for what these tough fought playoff games are like.

Here's the only Sam Houston 2017 Football footage I have found. It's a full game. I don't have time to watch it, but maybe someone can and will have insights.

Great find Kiyoat! I watched the entire first quarter. Penalties is what we cannot have especially when they convert to 1st down from 3rd down. Praire View shot themselves in the foot with penalties a ton in the first quarter in which ended up with SHSU scoring. A team like this, we cannot make mistakes. Briscoe has a quick release...quickest I have seen yet in the FCS. The commentators referred to him as a "gunslinger". We need to use that to our benefit and get some INT's! They do not play the offense as quick as we do! The running back got some big gains up the middle....gotta limit that. Their receivers are athletic and can avoid tackles very well, they are approx same athleticism as the SIU receivers. DB's gotta make the tackles. They run a ton of bubble screens. Our linemen (offense and defense) are bigger and way more talented than Prairie View's from what I saw in this game. We will win this game if we play a disciplined game on defense and a balanced game on offense for sure! They would not be 10 and 1 in the MO Valley conference!

Yotes need to wrap up on tackles as well. Too many times our guys come up and lay shoulder into them and they bounce off and the guy gets a big gain.

LMAO!! Well Yote 53.....yes! I love the game of football, I was a tomboy and did NOT play with dolls, I was outside playing "kill the guy with the ball" aaaaaaaand when I had the chance to play in a semi-pro women's tackle football league at 36..I did for 5 years...LOVED IT!!! To top it all off my ex husband of 18 years played in the NFL for 13 of those years and my 2 boys have played since 2nd grade who are now 19 and 16 still playing. Soooooooo I guess you can say it has been a major part of my life and my husband now isn't a sports guy so our house is the reverse during football season......I tell him "you know what season it is do not make any plans counting me in that hinder me watching all my football..high school, college and pro"! It works well:)!

SHSU may have a gaudy record but I think we score a ton on them. Their last three opponents of the season totaled 88 points on SHSU, and those teams have a combined record of 4-29 (with two of those four wins coming against each other). Teams sitting at 214, 236, and 240 in the Sagarin ratings, out of 255 total teams, were able to compete with SHSU. This is not an elite team.
Unfortunately, they've had two weeks to rest and prepare for us. If all factors were neutral I'd expect a win. Facing a rested team on the road in the playoffs will be very difficult. Our offense will take care of its business again, just a matter of our defense putting up a fight.
