The Yotes won their first ever FCS playoff game and are rewarded with a trip to Huntsville, Texas to play 6 seed Sam Houston State at 2 PM Saturday, December 2 (the first December game for this team since 1986). Sam Houston State finished 2nd in the Southland and only has one loss on the year, coming to the 4 seed. The teams now have a common opponent in Nichols. SHSU beat them at home 66-17. We're going to have to play a lot better this time around to win this one. Let's stay undefeated in the playoffs! Go Yotes! Judging by our one common opponent I'm not sure how we can look at this game as anything other than the yotes being a sizable underdog. We have obviously underestimated how good some of the teams from other conferences are. Most everyone acted like we were going to roll right over Nichols and some wondered if we should rest Strev. Thank God we forced four turnovers. I think we can beat Sam Houston, but it certainly would be considered an upset. I realize you can't look at one common opponent and make your spread based on that alone. I'm not saying we should be 42 point underdogs like our games vs Nichols would suggest. In fact in the Dome I would probably expect us to win. But on the road, for the second week in a row, with SH resting all week, I would say we are about 13 point underdogs. Hopefully we don't get bent over by the refs again like yesterday. We won't be able to over come that against these guys. I agree that people over looked Nichols but I think people also didn't consider that the Coyotes coming into that game were not exactly on a roll and I think emotionally and physically beat up from the last 3 games of the regular season. I think it was people slightly under rating Nichols and slightly over rating the Coyotes.

Elliot T. Bowers Stadium Sam Houston State University Huntsville, TX 12,593 Capacity 1985 - built 1994 - record attendance 16,148 (maybe using the grass sloped areas?) 2007 - switched to artificial turf 2012 - new orange chairbacks installed 2013 - New video board (Daktronics), elevator, press box and suites added 2016 - Replaced turf with 3D Astroturf (same as Nicholls State) The Bearkats (yes spelled that way) are 85-41-1 in this stadium I like the way that it is in a natural bowl. Reminds me of the old Colorado State U stadium.

Interesting, the link didn’t work for me but that is more in line with what I was thinking. They are expecting a crazy game, something like 43-40! The 21 point spread I saw earlier turns out to be bisonville speculation.

It would be great to be able to be convinced that the Coyotes will win this and if the Coyotes can really click on offense and play much better on D anything is possible. The only game I am or was less confident in a win was the game at NDSU but this one ranks #2 for many reasons. The Coyotes still haven't played a complete game for awhile and they need to do that to beat Sam Houston. SHSU is very good at home and they are a battle tested team when it comes to post season even though they have had hiccups but those are typically on the road against the very best in the country. I am going with the Bear Cats 48-28 on Saturday.

I'm surprised the Yotes are favored, while also feeling like we are sandbagging a bit, if that makes any sense. Nicholls obviously had a "the wheels came off" game against SHSU (only game like that all year by either team). I didn't think we should have been favored for NSU and I don't think they should be this week either.
But I recognize that may be because I want them to play as an underdog like the first half of the season...

I think the game will be won in the trenches, so to state. Nothing new here I suppose, but I'm hoping we play a whale of a game and take this one.
By the way, I like the school's namesake. I've read extensively about the civil war era, etc. and sure hope nobody tears down any monument to, or statue of, this guy. If they do, I'd be pissed.

Interesting facts: USD, limping into playoffs, lost by 5, 35, & 3. SHSU, rolling into playoffs, won by 37, 9, & 20.
Looks bad. Until... Combined record of the 3 teams Yotes played: 27-7 Combined record of the 3 teams SHSU played: 4-29 (Two of those three are in the bottom 15 Massey ratings in all of FCS, while the best one, 2-9 Abilene Christian - the team they beat by 9 - is 95th. For reference, Drake is 66th.)
