Definitely true on the media market part. But the Valley doesn’t gain much within the KC or Omaha markets that is doesn’t already have. In Omaha you’re competing with Creighton and UNL for fans. Omaha has the facilities but lacks the fan interest at the moment. In KC you’re competing with Kansas, K-state, Missouri, Missouri state. You secure the market but are you really gaining league recognition. KC lacks the facilities and also the fan interest. It’s the same situation that the Summit is in, we have some big markets but no one really cares about the summit because there’s just no interest in the teams.
Now if those two teams were to start continuously building buzz around their programs I think they get in to the valley. But i think the valley looks towards St Paul before it looks towards the others.

NDSU to the mountain west in 2026. That changes everything.

I just saw the headline come across my Google feed. Didn't actually read the article. Google is in the Fake News business now too I guess.

But i think the valley looks towards St Paul before it looks towards the others. When the MVC lost Loyola they added a pretty bad UIC program just to keep a Chicago presence. I think it has little to do with market share and more to do with profile and recruiting. It's a lot more attractive to have a team located in Omaha or KC than Vermillion or Brookings.

I have no idea if any of this has any substance and if so, how all this fits together: UND Message Board says Summit League looking at adding multiple schools and some Huge Changes

I don’t really see how adding hockey benefits the summit league. Maybe I’m looking at it wrong but wouldn’t it make more sense to add football and try to peel away some of the valley and big sky schools?

I don’t really see how adding hockey benefits the summit league. Maybe I’m looking at it wrong but wouldn’t it make more sense to add football and try to peel away some of the valley and big sky schools? The Summit has had issues with offering the minimum number of men's sports that a conference needs to sponsor for years. Sponsoring hockey solves that issue along with locking in Denver, UNO, and St. Thomas from leaving for another conference. The hockey programs at those schools are their marquee programs and Summit Hockey would be one of the top conferences in college hockey (basically it would be what the NCHC Is now). Those schools would have no other options for their hockey programs and would be locked into the Summit for all sports. Would not shock me if someday the Summit sponsored football too. The Summit schools have taken over the top half of the MVFC. We could spin off and add a few football affiliates and be just fine. It's the Valley football programs that would be hurt by that move.

So, is Mankato and Augie the play? (At least beginning with Hockey as Affiliates)

I believe Minnesota State is in play. Augie, no. None of the Dakota schools want anything to do with Augustana. I don't think any of the other conference members are too keen on adding yet another Dakota school.
North Dakota and Denver run the NCHC and will be a strong voice in Summit Hockey. They won't accept Augustana. They would accept Minnesota State while simultaneously kicking out St. Cloud.

If Summit hockey comes to fruition, does that mean much for the other sports? I assume any new Summit members would be hockey-only members.

Mankato would be a nice travel partner with St Thomas. Get Northern Colorado in, and you have a travel partner with Denver (Whether they like it or not LOL). UNC had a club hockey team (was suspended last year for bad behavior?). basically two old NCC teams.

It's not like schools such as USD are going to add the sport with our strict adherence to Title IX. It would be it's own separate conference like what has been formed for wrestling with SDSU.
