I wouldn’t be surprised if team didn’t walk through due to the rain.
I wondered if new deputy AD West would be out meeting people. Was told he was helping make sure new ticket staff was ok their first game day. Not many replays today, and wouldn’t be surprised if that was due to a lot of new faces on staff. New announcer was struggling. Kind of a recurring theme.

Are we really getting upset that the team didn't walk thru the tailgate in the rain? Maybe we should be a little more concerned that our defense was totally useless today.
I don't care if they piss on my tires in the tailgate area as long as they play well. What a horrible outing for the defense today. If we didn't get bailed out by a couple turnovers, we would have been out of the game halfway thru the third quarter.

Jesus Christ people. Gestring was manning a tailgate for the students on the north side. To say she wasn't engaged and visible is BS. And I personally talked to Herbie today walking the lot. So STFU about the administration. The administration of USD is doing everything they can, in case you didn't notice the construction in the Dome.
Now, if we want to talk about the play on the field. Underwhelmed. Didn't think it was great, but wasn't embarrassed. So not sure how I feel. Montana is a good program.
Walking out, my first thoughts were it's going to be a long season, 4 win team. Then thinking on it longer, I see a way to 7 wins. Depends on how well this team improves from week to week.
But anybody taking shots at the administration is F-d up.

Excuse me...you stfu...I do think that expecting someone...anyone to engage the tailgate is not unrealistic. One of them could have made an attempt to be available for the donors. I’m glad you saw them today, it would have been nice if the rest of us could have had the privilege. I also think the defense sucked today...this new defense certainly didn’t show me what it promised to do. What was all the hype about? Bring back last year!

I Agree with yote53, my take is that it was the first game for a variety of things. First game in the Dome being under construction with fans on only one side, new Defensive game plan, and quite a few young players. The season isn’t over yet and there is still plenty of time to correct things. However I do think this will most likely be another long year.
About the admin, they are focusing right now on getting students to the games and building a new culture(as well as a stadium). So give them some time to work on that and you’ll see them re engaging with the rest of tailgate once they have some things established. In the mean time everyone should be on their feet, loud and proud during the games this year to help them transform the game day culture.

DBs are the new area of concern for me, and yes, losing your best CB, didn’t help.
OL was shaky early, but better as the game went on. I think will be better than last year, we’ll see. It looks like the potential is there.
Completely shut down their run game, with that QB that’s a positive development.
3 for 13 on third and 4th downs, compared to 11-17 from the Griz. If we were closer to 50% here, might’ve actually pulled this one out.

As I mentioned in a different thread - overreactions from Week 1 is a big part of fandom these days. But I never imagined the overreaction would be about who walked around a rainy tailgate. Especially since this board has thrown up its hands for YEARS about lack of student involvement. We shouldn't be upset that the admin focuses on them - plus it appears to be working.
As the great poet Soul Asylum once said - nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd.

Now back to football, were you surprised by the outcome of the game?

You are kidding me that Ben Klett didn’t get in the game? Seriously? What the hell kind of game does it take to have a down within the 5 yard line and have Ben run it in? I am baffled? I’ll never understand why we don’t use Ben Klett in short yardage and goal line packages. Ben is a 235 lb, hard-nosed RB built for running over the opponents. Any doubts, watch the highlights of him versus ISU two seasons ago in the dome. This needs to be addressed.

Although, I am new to the board and haven’t seen many USD games in the past, a couple major things stood out in the game yesterday. One is in the first game of the year, you lay out a template for every other team on how to attack you good, bad, or indifferent. A few of those things are our kickoff coverage is very suspect (to put it lightly) and needs to be addressed ASAP. Teams cannot start drives at the -30 every drive off a score. It’s less on the kicker and more on the coverage and lack of proper technique. Another thing is we stress our cornerbacks and ask a lot of them in man coverage with little help in the middle of the field. Too many times there was no high hole or low hole players in the middle of the field to take away post and deep crossers. That works if you have great cover guys!! We don’t. If you don’t take away something, you take away nothing! Kody Case is a dude. Out of the 3 most impactful players in the field yesterday (Montana’s #18 & #16 and Kody), two of them were 5’10 or less. Luckily, USD has another one redshirting right now that can be a similar type of player for us. #18 for Montana will be in the NFL next fall. Lastly, our Redzone/Goaline offense MUST improve and that starts with being able to get into heavier personnel and forcing the run. Twice we ran power and Montana was in a Bear front, both times we didn’t adjust the blocking scheme and they had a TFL. Goaline can’t be an afterthought and must be practiced over and over. Just my thoughts.

I agree Ben should be utilized! He can wear down the Opposing DL and linebackers. Short yardage, especially at the goal line one would think he would be the go to. We were all saying this game would be a good barometer to see what where we stand going forward this season. We will be facing teams as good as as Montana and better. Montana did not do anything tricky or that shouldn’t of been planned for. Two key players injured early in the game did hurt us but I am sure the coaches are disappointed by the overall play. I still believe we should have a nickel package in our defensive scheme. I don’t think using linebackers to cover the slots and tight ends in this league is wise. I don’t know why we have abandoned the nickel package. Our linebackers are defensively faster and cover sideline to sideline better than years prior but tasking them to cover skilled receivers in open space requires a unique skill set that most linebackers at this level do not have. I am hoping after this loss then going to Oklahoma isn’t going to hurt the morale and confidence of this team. Coaches have a battle ahead of them and the team is going to have to regroup and get a chip on their shoulder to be ready for the rest of the battle.

Is there any place to watch a video of the game? The one on the athletics website stops before the first series. Thanks in advance
