Speaking of Coach Smith - did any of you watch some of USU's games against VCU or SDSU? Woof. I'd take the Yotes over them right now by double digits, and that was after a pretty uninspiring game against CU. Ya, they looked bad. If Smith leads this team to a 3rd consecutive mountain west title then the Gophers better go snatch him up. It would be the greatest coaching feat ever. They did not look very good at all. State looked so much more talented. State also looked very good. Probably not a great year to be playing them 3-4 times. I think they win the league easy this year.

Bunnies hit 15 threes against Utah State. Anytime a team does that every thing else will fall into place and they'll roll. Coyotes, on the other hand, are a abysmal 4-28 from behind the arc in their first 60 minutes of basketball thus far. Not going to win much of anything with that kind of bricklaying.

Looks like it could be a long year for the Yotes. We haven't been in either game.

This team is very inexperienced. We'll get better, but this season will be about building for next season.

It’ll be interesting to see how everything plays out, I think they’ll get better as the season goes. It’s going to be tough, SDSU is like always reloaded and ready to go and we play them 3 times. How well the season goes will be be how well we compete in the Dakota Showcase IMO. Like most have said, very young, haven’t bonded, global pandemic, etc. But Lee and the staff will have to find a way to keep them all buying in to the vision, if they can’t do that the season will be pretty uneventful. I’ve seen a few posts on how we’re in a rebuilding phase, which is true no doubt about that. It does feel like we’ve been in a rebuilding/building phase for about the last 8 years. So I can see some of the frustrations that some have, but you gotta just settle in for the season.

Ugly. You’ve got a negative assist to turnover ratio two games in a row, that’s just bad basketball. Somebody’s gotta make a shot though. It seems like the guys who are D-1 athletes are making lots of dumb plays and the guys who aren’t D-1 athletes aren’t making enough perimeter shots. Just two games. There’s time. But somebody’s gotta lead. Mostly in production.

5-34 from three point range so far this season...15%. Granted it's just one aspect of the game, but that's beyond bad and I've always felt shooting percentage was the most important statistic. Of course, it can be greatly affected by shot selection and defense. These weren't the easiest games to start the season for an inexperienced team, but, hopefully they'll learn and grow. A good measure of the progress will be when we play Drake again in a few weeks. Same with the Dakota Showcase. Results in December shouldn't have too much bearing as to where we are in March. Hopefully we'll be able to see this year's version of the 'Yotes improve weekly.

So I can see some of the frustrations that some have, but you gotta just settle in for the season. We were about as "built" as it gets last season. We just couldn't get it done. Hopefully we never have to rebuild the roster to this magnitude again. Teams that reload only bring in a few new players a year, and only the great ones play right away.

This was the worst possible season to be putting such an inexperienced team on the court. Practice has been greatly disrupted and there basically isn't a non-conference season to learn from.
Or maybe this was the best year to field such a product since this season will never mean a whole lot anyways. There will always be an asterisk next to the 20-21 college seasons.

With an experienced team, you'd definitely like to see the "normal" opportunity to have a closed scrimmage, plan a D2 exhibition game, get a couple winnable home games. But Covid changes everything and you end up opening against a top 5 Pac12 team, an experienced Mo Valley team, and next up a Big 10 team. Just have to hope they compete and improve and prepare for the conference season & conference tournament.

I'm worried about this season. Our overall talent continues to decline each year. Looking back at all of Coach Lee's years, you could always say we had good talent. This is the first year I no longer believe that.
I listed out the players in my opinion that could have started or played a lot of minutes on multiple teams in our league from this season and the past 2.
2020-21 - Umude 2019-20 - Hagedorn, Umude, Simpson, Peterson, Kelley 2018-19 - Hagedorn, Umude, Simpson, Burch-Manning, Peterson
The other thing that worries me is that Coach Lee brought in only 1 of the guys listed above.
I'm still holding out hope, but I'm getting very nervous.

Just look at last year as a big example of how far apart the two D1 programs are in this state. The Jacks had to replace pretty much everyone including the coach and were still better than a Coyote team that was experienced as it gets. That alone should tell anyone all they need to know with an objective hat on. If the Coyotes cannot finish ahead of the Jacks last year they never will under coach Lee. These programs are going in complete opposite directions right now. If the Jacks can win a conference title with all the turnover they had, then why are so many as Coyote fans giving this team and this coach a pass this year. That is certainly the way it sounds by many of these posts. SDSU and NDSU don't just throw away seasons and are competitive every year but for some reason it is okay for the Coyotes to have these 3 to 5 year rebuilds that are far from certain to build a winner. It is just frustrating to watch this happen but what is more frustrating is to see how many people are ok with it.
The Coyote job was at least somewhat attractive when Smith left. He actually took over a pretty bad situation and a team that was still playing on a football field. He left the program in a much better place than it was when he took over. Lee took over a good situation in a new arena and the team has regressed. It just doesn't make sense. There was every reason in the world where the successor to Smith was going to do well. Lee still has that chance but day by day that likelihood continues to diminish.

There are a lot of practices and games left, so I'm not ready to call this team a bottom-half-SL team yet. Utah State looked completely different during game 3 than games 1 & 2. Some of the bad 3pt shooting is shot selection (fixable). I expect the game to slow down for AJ - only 4 assists (and 4 TO's) when the ball is in his hands so much doesn't seem like what we expect (fixable-ish). At some point you just have to make shots, and there are players on this team who can make shots. Stan is at 27%, Kruz at 33% and AJ at 40%, which feels like it is a result of rushing/panicking for volume shooters (fixable). Heimen is 1-8, mostly shoot at point blank range - that will change. Defensively, we don't appear to have a bunch of Carlton Hursts running around out there. Just need to find an identity - seems like a good year to pressure full court and mask some size challenges.
