Our Defense improved in 2019, some quick numbers:
2019
AVE PTS by OPP/Game = 32.42
AVE PTS by OPP/Game without OK = 29
2018
AVE PTS by OPP/Game = 34.18 AVE PTS by OPP/Game without KSU = 34.9
This is about a five point per game improvement. That is significant especially with a new Defensive scheme being implemented.

I think the defensive side of the ball still needs to improve by miles. we are comparing a defense that was awful to one that was slightly less awful maybe between 2018 and 2019. We gave up the same yards per play in conference games both years(6.2) so not much of an improvement. The problem when thinking back on the defense was how bad they looked on the eye test in the games that ended up being swing games on our schedule that were the difference in making the playoffs and staying home(HBU,UNI,SIU, WIU). I am optimistic about the LB and secondary core but the DLine situation is a bit scary if we are being honest.

Picking my new seats today got me excited. So I looked at the schedule again. To me, week 2 is an absolute must win at N AZ. If you win that game, and follow with win dome opener. You’re 2-1 heading to Normal Illinois. Let’s call that a loss. You’re 2-2 on Ddays playing WIU. W there. Now to Brookings. Let’s call it a L. You’re 3-3 hosting Dixie State. Better not have a Houston Baptist situation. Now 4-3 hosting UNI. They’re tough but not unbeatable at home. So you could be 5-3 now heading to Grand Forks. A winnable game and you could be 6-3 before heading to Terre Haute. Could be 7-3 before hosting NDSU. 7-4 is attainable and puts them on playoff bubble. But week 2 is critical IMO.

Absolutely huge. I’m not a believer that the game in Brookings is a loss. The pendulum has swung. Our team is going to get decent. How good our record is comes down to defense.

Picking my new seats today got me excited. Did you go with the East or West side?

since SD has been in the MVFC every season the Jacks have had has been better than any season the Yotes have had. It is gonna take more than 1 game for the pendulum to even move let alone swing. The brutal facts are that these 2 programs are still not close. The Yotes better have just one season that is more successful than SDSU before any Coyote fan should even try to make a comparison.

I guess it depends on the source. I think Hero Sports does as good a job as possible covering FCS football. SDSU had their issues at QB after Gibbs got hurt. But if they get that position straightened out, they will be formidable.

The comment I made was.....” I’m not a believer the game in Brookings is a loss”. I should’ve added the word “necessarily”. Despite the pessimism of a certain unnamed “fan” I stand by my statement.
There was no mention of the seasons, past or present. Coyote Fan correctly points out SDSU has had better years than us since we joined the league. We knew that was a given for a minimum of 3 years because we didn’t have D-1 players to compete and it showed. Our first year was 2012. So I went back to 2015 and compared stats in our games with SDSU for the following 5 years. The average score was 31-24 SDSU. If you remove the 2018 abortion it’s 27-24. SDSU has averaged 477 yds per game. USD has averaged 437 yds per game. Both teams have committed 8 turnovers in that 5 year stretch.
I make no excuse for USD not being able to get W’s in 2015 and 2017 when we totally outplayed them but choked it away. I make no excuse for the one blowout the past 5 years that should never happen. But as I have eluded to in the past there are dynamics in the locker room that decide outcomes. And the one big one was not beating SDSU. That’s the 800 lb gorilla that finally got slayed last year. They now know they can win. Can they win in Brookings? Yes. Will they? I’ll tell you after the game. But getting the W last year was huge in terms of belief.
SDSU has had every advantage up till now. They went D-1 first when their administration had enough vision to do that. Secondly, because of that, the press coverage the two have had has given them a huge advantage in branding, recruiting and overall excitement. That probably isn’t likely to change, although total coverage for them will be decreased as time passes. Then they had the talk and building of a new stadium. Credit to them for getting it done. It’s truly a nice stadium but time has already proved out that when inclement weather strikes, the fans are basically no shows outside their die hards.
The DakotaDome renovation, if you haven’t seen it, is truly outstanding. It now feels like a total first class stadium. The amenities are off the chart good. The players locker room is amazing. The whole atmosphere is second to none.
The weight room at USD is in a class by itself. No one in the league can stand up to it.
The investment made by USD administration and fans/alum has put us on totally equal footing. Our players are better...faster...and stronger. We can now go toe to toe with anyone in the league. And I think we will. We slayed the 800 lb gorilla last November. That win was huge.
THAT IS WHY I SAID THE PENDELUM HAS SWUNG. That doesn’t mean we’ll win every damn game but we will be in the hunt. If believe that with all my heart.

Game times starting to show up on FB schedule. SDSU game slated for a 6 pm start. SDSU loves those evening starts early in season. (Presumably so farmers have time for chores and harvesting.). But considering they wanted that game moved to early in season for better weather and hope of increased attendance, I wonder if this will be counterproductive? Plus it just makes for a long day if you are traveling for it. Or am I being too negative when assessing it?

I'd get a less than optimal time if you were competing for TV time, but that's not the case when both teams are playing each other. Selfishly, it is easier for me to travel from the twin cities the day of. I also just enjoy night games more, perhaps because I'm not bringing children. If the game happens at all is highly questionable though. I'm expecting all the impending professional sports reboots to be disasters. Hard to envision the NCAA forging ahead with magnitudes more difficult logistics if the much simpler (and lucrative) pro sports don't figure it out.

Evening games in the early fall are really quite popular in Brookings. I didn't look up actual numbers but it seems that I recall several crowds of between 12,000 and 15,000 fans. From my own selfish point of view, it allows me to leave the Black Hills on Saturday morning and still arrive in time to greet a few friends in the tailgate area and attend the game. Fall Saturdays are precious and many local fans really like having the day for their regular seasonal activities and still being able to attend the games.

Today the SEC voted to play a full conference only schedule a few days after the ACC did the same. I believe this bodes well for our opener against Iowa State as the Big 12 has 10 schools which translates to 9 games. Playing a regional game against the Coyotes is needed to get to that magic 10/11 game season.
As pessimistic as I am with all the garbage the media spins out I think this is a good omen for Sept. 5th to happen. Not sure how many if any fans will watch but I’m more hopeful than I’ve been in awhile we’re gonna play.
