I believe of the 4 games cancelled 2 were due to us. NDSU and Western Illinois were responsible for those games.

I don't think we quit. We went the whole spring semester up to the UNI game without any COVID issues on the team. I believe we did everything we could do to minimize the risk, but the bad luck of the draw combined with the NCAA contact tracing rules made it almost inevitable that we would eventually have a position group in quarantine and be forced to cancel a game. I also wouldn't be surprised if there are FCS playoff games forfeited as a result of COVID. (Part of me wonders how much teams in the playoffs will follow the NCAA contact tracing rules, especially teams that have in the past used rules, such as faking injuries, to their advantage, but I digress).
However, the spring season in general was a disappointment. Seeing the other 3 Dakota teams in the playoffs as we sit at home is a tough pill to swallow. If the Yotes were hosting a first round playoff game in the Dome this coming weekend, it is something I would have really been looking forward to.
The season got off to a bad start when Indiana State quit before the season ever started with the revamped MVFC schedule not doing the Yotes any favors. This was then followed by Western Illinois saying they weren't ready to play the season opener in the Dome. But these events aside, we still didn't play close to the level we need to if we expect to compete in the MVFC. Hopefully lessons were learned and we come out this fall a much improved team. There are no excuses going forward. Our facilities are top notch. Our coaching staff has been in place for enough time to put their stamp on the program. It is time to see improved results on the field and on the scoreboard.

All I can think about now is I hope state gets knocked off by somebody in the playoffs. Don't really care who wins as long as it's not them.

Preach on preacher man! This season was different and sloppy, but it was not fake. Somehow most of the best programs made it work, while most of the weaker programs struggled and quit. Go figure. I hope our program learned some lessons from it all. 8 games scheduled, 4 played. Teams shutting down in the middle of the season for non-Covid related reasons. Teams never even bothering to play this season. Those things didn't happen in basketball or volleyball. This season was a complete joke and absolutely doesn't count. *

I should clarify that I was not saying that WE quit! I was referring to the teams that others have mentioned. We struggled but were forced to shut down. The added weight room and film study time might actually be a blessing in disguise.

I saw a tweet that mentioned FCS playoffs today and had a double take. No one is ever going to remember who wins the title. Could be a team that gets more wins in the playoffs than the regular season.

To the players, it's real. It's real to the coaches. It's real to anybody involved with a program that's still playing. Fact of the matter is, whoever wins this year still had to beat a bunch of other teams to do it. It may not be the same level of competition as other years, but they did beat everybody they had to. You can put an asterisk next to it if you want, and I would probably be agree. But it doesn't change the fact that there's still 8 teams in the playoffs and I wish we were one of them.

I can guarantee you that if SDSU wins the title that not many USD fans will ever forget it and many will probably be complaining how illegitimate it was for years. Sorry but that is plain and simply sour grapes. This National Title will count every bit as much as every other one. The trophy will not look any different and shouldn't. If USD was the #1 seed no one would be talking how no one would ever remember who wins it. USD needs to get better, and WAY better! WAY WAY WAY better!

Yes, the season 'counts'. No, it isn't anything near a 'normal' season. I'd equate it to something like an AAU season - if you are there you will watch, but no one who isn't a parent goes out of their way to watch. Or, you could use the tree falling in the woods - if no one is there to watch/care.....

Or, you could use the tree falling in the woods - if no one is there to watch/care..... I can tell you there's about a hundred guys at that ugly Dykehouse facility in Brookings that care. I sure hope the guys in the dome care about it too. It's not a normal season, but every team was dealt the same hand to start this season. We got some tough breaks with the COVID cases and missed games and stuff and I get that. Maybe we weren't as diligent as we needed to be in terms of social distancing or it could have just been bad luck, but the fact remains that we didn't get to play as many games. And in the games we did play, we were outmanned and outplayed in almost every category. Whatever adversities both USD and state faced, state obviously handled them better and continued to play football at a high level. I don't think the program should get a pass for the disaster of a spring we had just because it's not a normal season.

Right on FightSD,
Winning programs find a way to win, loser programs typically make excuses and rationalize losing. If you rationalize losing and don't take steps to win than the rationalization made will always hold a team back. The team should absolutely not get a pass whatsoever. I think this season should have cost Nielson his job but the powers that be will give him a pass because of Covid when the downward trend started plenty before covid. It is kind of like the excuse to be OK for the program to lose for about 5-10 years because of transitioning to D1. The Jacks sure didn't use much more than 1 year as an excuse for that. I always point to Dawn P and women's basketball. They face adversity and figure out a way to overcome it. Plain and simple. They are winners.

Comparing football to women's basketball is really not fair. Apples to oranges. I'm not taking anything away from the success our WBB program has had. I am a huge fan of that team and don't miss a game. But building a winning culture with a group of 10 - 15 players is much different than it is with the 100 or so guys in a football locker room. Plus having years of sustained success makes it a lot easier to continue winning. Easier for recruiting and just having kids that know how to win ball games. It's been a long time since the football team has had either of those luxuries. Does Bob deserve criticism for this season? Absolutely. Should it cost him his job? Possibly. But I am not at all upset or surprised they didn't part ways with him after this season. If nothing else, it was a strategic move to keep him at the helm. If this season was enough to convince Herbster to move on from Bob, I'm glad he's holding out. The last thing this program needs at this point is a rushed head coaching hire. The caliber of coach we need isn't looking to take a new job in April/May without a spring ball to install their system. The other option would have been to fire Bob and make one of the coordinators the interim guy, but that doesn't really accomplish anything other than spread dissent through the program since the rest of the staff and players can see the writing on the wall. Bob does get a pass on this season, but not because I have some deep seeded belief he will turn things around. Solely because the timing is all wrong to fire a head coach.

The Jacks come from behind to defeat Southern Illinois to advance to the semi-finals vs Delaware. What a bracket for the Jacks as they get to play 3 fairly weak teams considering that is all they have to beat to get to the final. James Madison or Sam Houston will be by far their toughest test if they make it to Frisco.

As for the game last night, the SIU OC should be ashamed of himself. Whoever was calling the plays blew that game for them. Sooooo many short yardage situations that turned into ZERO points.
