Well it’s finally upon us. The 2nd season. The MVFC grind. Now we see first hand if we are pretenders or contenders. Last spring we played MS in the Dome and it was one of those games I felt like we dominated them yet found a way to lose. We take a lead only to give up a kickoff return for a TD. Looking at total yards we dominated them yet they won the game. They went on to play six games in the league, going 5-1 and making the playoffs. North Dakota boat raced them 44-10 but nonetheless they won several close games.
Looking at the two games they’ve played thus far and it appears they are back on track and a really good team. They lost to Oklahoma State by 7, and beat Central Arkansas by 9, avenging (2) losses they had to them last fall. I’m assuming because of Covid and such they rescheduled each other in the same year. They held Oklahoma State to 53 yards rushing and gave up 121 to Central Arkansas. However, they have given up over 300+ yards to those same two teams in the air. They’ve won the time of possession battle both games, and lastly they’ve had 2 weeks to prepare.
So what’s all that mean for the Coyotes? Nothing. Business as usual. We have rushed for over 160 yards per game twice and 352 last Saturday. We’ve thrown the ball effectively and efficiently. We’ve played twice at night so far, and we’ve won on the road. This should be one heck of a football game. For just a first game theres a lot on the line. A win would be huge and give us some momentum coming back home for 2 games, followed by a winnable game at UNI. Our defense thus far has simply been damn good. Our offense has been efficient. Camp is getting better each game and we have a stable of running backs and receivers. Our offensive line has performed admirably. We just don’t need any more injuries there.
I no longer make predictions. But I will predict this. The Coyotes will be focused and ready to play. They’ve got the benefit of flying down as opposed to a 7.5 hour bus ride so that’s great. I personally think this is going to be one heckuva game. Very very physical. My hope is the Coyotes remember last spring. Two overlooked Valley teams trying to get a quick start.

I just mentioned this in the Cal Poly thread, but our lines have been a big surprise to me so far this year. This is a statement game. Like YF says, "Contender or Pretender?". If we can win the line of scrimmage, I like our chances. Our skill talent has proven to be as good if not better than a lot of teams in our league, we just haven't matched up well at the lines lately. That can all start to change this weekend.
Offensively, dominate the line of scrimmage and let all those RBs tote it and just pound them into sand. Camp has steadily progressed week to week. He is a baller when we can keep him clean. Our WR crew is up there with the best in the league as a unit. I feel like our offense can be very explosive this weekend as long as we can establish the run, which will be tough against MSU. We need the threat of the run to open up the RPO game like we saw this last Saturday.
Defensively, stop the run in our base package. Again, our line has played well so far this season and has allowed the LBs to run around and make plays. Our secondary still concerns me a little, but if we can make them 1 dimensional, I like our chances.
Big opening weekend in valley play. "Contenders or Pretenders"? We will find out Saturday!

I'm very curious to know what the spread is going to be on this game when it comes out. It would sure be great if we can head into the homecoming game on a 3 game winning streak. We need to keep this momentum rolling.

Eventually the Coyotes are going to be in a tight game in the second half. I want to see how they respond to adversity. How will they do when things aren't necessarily going their way. Right now this is a good football team. I just want to be able to say that at the end of the year. I am tempted to take the Bears but I am not going to. Coyotes win it 38-21. Not saying this with much confidence but I was also pretty confident that the Coyotes would not completely dominate their last two opponents from start to finish. I am glad that didn't turn out to be correct.

I'd say the Kansas game qualified as a tight game.

IIRC Missouri State had a fairly large and strong D-line that wore us down in the spring. I love the improvement we've seen with our o-line this fall, and this will be a great litmus test.

Gave up a pick 6 & a KO return last game. Clean up the mistakes and go take care of business.

This is our 10th year in the conference and we have won a total of 7 road games (have never gotten more than 1 in a season). I'm taking nothing for granted here.

We need to keep this momentum rolling. Yotes -2 First of all, thank you for finding that. Second of all, REALLY? While I do have confidence that we win this game, I didn't think we would be the favorites on the road at #18. After the spring they had compared to ours, and they have followed it up with an impressive fall so far. Petrino is a hell of a coach with a big name, I figured Vegas would be making the ranked home team with a famous coach the favorites. Maybe they are learning their lesson on underestimating this team. We have beat the spread pretty easily in all 3 games this year.

... I figured Vegas would be making the ranked home team with a famous coach the favorites. Maybe they are learning their lesson on underestimating this team. We have beat the spread pretty easily in all 3 games this year. I doubt the opening lines are based on how famous the coach is. Oddsmakers don't like to lose money. They want lots of bets on both sides of the coin. We've now produced some very good stats, so it isn't that surprising. Let's see if that line moves based on betting. If the line moves quickly right before the game, then that means that the "sharps" (the professional bettors that consistently win more than they lose) are dumping a bunch of money on one side of a line. No idea where that line came from, though. I can't find it.

This is our 10th year in the conference and we have won a total of 7 road games (have never gotten more than 1 in a season). I'm taking nothing for granted here. While this is true we've also fared historically bad on road trips to the west coast since we made the move to FCS. So last week gives me some hope that we are starting to get some of these monkeys off our back.

That's why I made a big deal out of the travel to California as an obstacle. This team is wired differently it appears. It makes me nervous how optimistic I am for this game. I just have this feeling we're going to go down there and beat them pretty soundly, business as usual.

Really having to put caution on my optimism, but this sure feels different the past two weeks.
