Nobody has mentioned the MSU "goal line stand" in the first half. That ball broke the plane. We had the TD. The refs were freaking terrible but in the end it was our offense not moving the ball and scoring that cost us the game. I've moved on to this week. I thought it was in on second down too, but I didn't have a clear view. On fourth down I was standing on the field at the goal line and the about five yards off the sideline, and saw it very clearly. A person could accuse me of red tinted glasses, but I can't fool my gut reaction to the play which was "Yes, we scored". The ball crossed the goal line. Those refs were way over the head as to the speed of the game.

Pretty hard to keep the ball out of the end zone when that happens.

How can you say the ball broke the plain? There was no replay angle that I saw that showed it. They have the ability to take a second look with replay and there was no confirmation that he broke the plane. There was no good goal line view that I saw that showed he definitely scored. The officials have much more to go by than the fans watching on video. It is one thing to say live that they got it wrong but those officials have better angles than we do and have better video replays or at least that same as we do. They looked at the video and came to the same conclusion so I don't see how people can have a problem with that. My beef is with the "stopped forward progress" excuse for the fumble not being reversed. That is what is bullsh*t. Either way I don't believe the officials had a huge part in deciding the game. The Coyotes should not have had a small runningback in the game at the goal line and giving it to him right up the middle. That is the problem I had with the game. Do the officials have better angles than we do, though? I know in like P5 games they have the pylon cams and stuff, but at this level I'm pretty sure they rely on whatever media outlet is carrying the game for video reviews. Could be wrong I guess, but I thought that was the problem we always had a few years back before ESPN carried every game. The crowd would be going nuts in the dome asking for a review but we just didn't really have any camera angles if the game wasn't on TV.

If you couldn't tell from watching the video replays I don't know what to tell you. Maybe get some glasses? There was a perfect view that showed the runner's entire top half of his body down to his waist across the goal line with the ball being carried in his arm at torso level. It wasn't that hard to figure out he was across the goal line. No, it wasn't the 4th down play either, I'm not sure if we were in there as I was still fuming about not getting the earlier call. It was on of the prior plays, I believe 2nd down.

Yes, we did score on the 4th down play earlier in the game, if you piece the video shots together to get a full picture of the sequence. But, they can’t and won’t do that if there’s not a clear video. You saw it in the Cowboy-Eagles game last night. We had our opportunities and squandered them and they were made worse by an inept referee that took the easy route and said it was “stopped forward progress” which cannot be reviewed and they knew it, so they didn’t look bad.
The key was when they scored to go up 8, and then Camp and Bell hook up for a huge momentum play to change the whole complexion of the situation. It’s now 4 down territory because we need 8 to tie. 1st down is an extra down now, 2nd down is really 1st down. So what do we do? We run the ball on 1st down, ok good call, you could try to end it quick with a throw on 1st, but a run is still an excellent call! But, if you do that, you need to run it again on 1st down (really 2nd down). Trying to throw it in that restricted space is TOUGH and defensive coordinators know that, so you will only get 1 shot to complete a ball down there. You can call 5 pass plays, but only 1 of them typically will be open because of the lack of space. Yes, that was absolutely a Pass interference on Vander Esch and we should have had a new set of downs!! We had that 1 shot though on the next play when Camp missed a wide open Case in the back of the end zone when he wrapped behind the inside DB. Easy pitch and catch, should be 100% completion every time. Good QBs don’t panic and miss that throw. He needs to grow in these scenarios or move on and split time with a more athletic QB that may miss some of the same throws, but will give our offense more options in the QB run game, a component he doesn’t have at all.

OK - you guys talked me in to watching the 2nd half replay. Sounds like I missed some drama and outrage.

It broke the plane. I literally was standing on the end line. When he went to the ground their players pushed the top of his sshoulder pads away.
I officiated college ball a number of years and this crew was the most inept I’ve seen in ages.

But I literally was on the end zone line. This crew stunk and they were influenced by Petrino

OK - you guys talked me in to watching the 2nd half replay. Sounds like I missed some drama and outrage. Here is the link to the game replay: www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/e3457473-4a74-44b6-b9a2-360a12eb3d63The whole goal line kerfuffle starts at 1:01:04. The camera angles aren't great, which is why the call on the field couldn't be over-turned (no matter what they called on the field). But if you really want to break it down, you can see when first contact was made the linebacker was standing on the goal line and hit the RB in the stomach, so unless he was carrying the ball on his hip (he wasn't) it would have broke the line. Interestingly, the other LB gets credit for knocking the runner back, but his first contact would have been in the end zone. But here's the thing - 1st and goal and 2 of the 4 plays are QB runs (not sneaks). And that is with the 6'3", 240 lbs short-distance QB on the bench. That bad call should have been overcome. The non-called PI (2:41:30) was pretty bad. The DB literally never had his hands off the WR. Even the announcer caught that one. But here's the thing - Case was wide open for a TD on the next play, and it was a bad pass. That bad call was easy to overcome. The fumble fest (2:45:50) was a cluster$&#@. Should have had the ball at the 7 yard line with 1:31 left. But here's the thing - it ended up being Yotes ball, 1st-and-goal from the 9 yard line with 52 seconds left. That bad call was overcome. (Overcame? Overcomeness? Overcomeitude?) Just didn't execute from there.

I'm glad we still honor the truest tradition that this program has developed at the D1 level. That is none other than watching our playoff hopes die in September. Life truly does feel normal again. I kid...kind of. Losing this one (and at Kansas) hurts a lot. Gonna have to win 5 out of the last 7 to make it. As disappointed as I am tonight, I look at the schedule and see at least 5 winnable games. The gameplan has always been a 2-1 non-conference record then to take care of business at home and steal a game or two on the road in MVFC play. I always expect a win at home, and trips to WIU and UNI both look very winnable. I believe in this defense. They may have given up 31 points and 439 yards tonight, but defending is very hard when you spend so much time on the field. It also was the first time we've had to deal with a mobile QB and he seemed like someone that's going to give fits to everyone they face. The defense kept a "never say die" attitude the entire game. Even when they got absolutely screwed out of a big fumble in the red zone at the end of the game. I think it was the very next play that Harden kept with a deep pass and forced another fumble that we got to keep. I'm confident that this defense is going to leave us in a spot to win every game on our schedule. The other side of the ball obviously boils down to a QB who went 12/29 tonight and fell apart in the red zone. Get Camp to build some composure and we can go far. I thought big offensive wins the last two weeks would have done that, and he seemed to start the game in decent form, but we all saw the big regression in the 2nd half. He's clearly talented and wouldn't be in this spot if the coaches didn't believe in him. Gotta remember that he is like 19 years old and very little experience under this kind of pressure. I'm hoping we get to look back to this game as a growing pain on the road to Camp effectively leading this team the next 4 years. Get built up again on D Days so that we can take care of business against UND and head out to UNI with a season back in tact. We've got a lot of football left here. What a difference 3 weeks makes. Anyone else remember melting down?
