Question: Does anyone know of a WVU fanboard where they discuss what is going on with WBB? My quick searches find discussions on FB, MBB, and baseball - zero about WBB. Which likely tells you a lot about fan support for WVU WBB... They only drew 1,300 fans per game (to our 2,000) in a metro area of ~140,000 people that has no sport options outside of WVU. I'm stunned to hear they don't have a home to discuss the sport... I had noticed that, too. All indications are that support for WVU WBB is pretty tepid. Even Dawn's introductory press conference had a second-rate vibe to it. I thought Coach K's was far more genuinely enthusiastic and better-attended. Apart from the huge pay increase, I think Dawn may come to regret this move. Although, having said all that, winning is a great salve.

I will preface my thoughts by saying that I believe that the Summit League would be better next year with Coach Dawn.
Now my thoughts on women's basketball at West Virginia. WV didn't hire Dawn to have her coach a weak team in the Big 12. They didn't hire her to coach a team unable to garner the same feeble fan interest that has been their recent past. They aren't paying her several hundred thousand dollars per year to continue having the same thing they have had. They will be expecting her to do what she did in Vermillion; to take the team to the top tier of the conference standings,to increase fan interest, and to grow the prestige of the program to a point where press conferences, fan gatherings, and other events will be taken more seriously. I predict that she will succeed.

I predict that she will succeed. I also think Dawn will succeed at WVU, but it will likely take at least a couple of years to turn the program around. You can't change culture overnight; be that the team or the fan base. There is more to culture than just the head coach. You need to have the right players in place. Dawn's predecessors at USD had a history of recruiting players that had a large part in creating a great culture. With regards to fan support, few regions in the country support women's basketball like the upper midwest. When Dawn took the helm of the USD program, fan support was riding high with the team coming off the WNIT championship. Dawn took over a top notch program at USD and made it even better. I am confident she will do the same at West Virginia, but it will be a bigger task than she had at USD.

I agree with everything you wrote. I genuinely believe that Coach Dawn will build a program that will inspire a bunch of those 60,000 fans that attend their football games into their basketball arena. Can she fill their 14,000 seats? I doubt it. But I've been wrong before.
In short, my point is that West Virginia will be a step down only if she falls short of the goals set jointly by WVU and Coach Dawn. That just isn't her style.

Dawn is a great coach. Dawn is a great marketer. But one thing Dawn can’t control is the area of the country she’s going to live, Coach, and recruit. She’s no longer in the Midwest with a lot of kids with midwestern values. She’s in more of an urban area and that’s a totally different ball game. Do I think she’ll succeed? I’m 50/50 and I love her as a coach. But there’s just somethings out of her control.
I predict in the next five years the absolute best she’ll be is 3rd or 4th and not consistently. She’ll regret leaving. Money isn’t everything.

Aubrey Joens from Iowa State entered the transfer portal today. Des Moines Register article says USD is among the schools she has already heard from. Also Oklahoma and Marquette.

For some reason, this just felt relevant to me. Haha I enjoy that the song was inspired by the Maryland countryside and that the writers had never been to West Virginia before. It just had the right number of syllables. Massachusetts was considered but didn't seem right. Could have gone with South Dakota too I suppose.

If Kyah left then good luck to her but I won’t be checking on her stats or anything. It’s who’s wearing the red & white I care about. Larkins drives harder to the rim and Guebert has a better three percentage. We’ll be fine.

I wish Kyah the best of luck as a USD fan and a native South Dakotan. She has great defensive skills to stop the slashing forwards of the Summit League. I think she can carry that forward for Dawn at WVU. She will also improve on her 3 point shooting which was lackluster for the Yotes. I will follow her career going forward. 7th year senior Myah Selland will be celebrating with this news.
