The ultimate goal of this football program should be to build a solid foundation where there would be continuity of success. We are no where close to that right now, but we can be. If the head coach retires or goes to a higher level job, and we have years of continued success, the obvious choice to succeed the departing coach would be someone already on staff. I would cite NDSU as an example. When their head coach is hired by a bigger program they hire within. That way recruiting isn’t disrupted. Every time you have a wholesale change in staff, I believe you set the program back a minimum of three years. The system is in place and needs not to be disrupted. The coach that leaves undoubtedly takes some staff with him, but the “cream of his coaching pool” usually stays and becomes the new head coach. Again, the system. Bob needs to raise the bar no question. But that means making an investment in the program. Both the fan base and the university need to do all that is feasible for this to happen. Bob knows he needs to win at a higher rate. You know that and I know that. But the one thing you can’t fault him for is integrity within the program. That has been established. The Coyotes run a clean program. That can’t be said at a lot of other places. Hiring Coach Davis is hopefully a step in that direction. Replace coaches that aren’t doing their job with coaches that can do the job. Once that’s in place, along with the investment needed to make that happen, good things should happen. If not, that’s when wholesale changes need to happen. There never should be a coach hired that is told by anyone in the department they are the heir apparent. That should come as a result of their skill level while coaching at USD. I’m extremely hopeful we turn the corner in 2023 and establish the foundation I just talked about. A couple of good years and 2022 is in the past and out of our minds. I’ve said this many times and I’ll say it again. USD is a diamond in the rough. We can win in all sports. But we have to commit to making it happen. Coach Davis is a good start. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time I struggle with the NDSU example. You're comparing apples and sail boats. NDSU consistently wins national championships. USD consistently wins some non conference games and picks up a couple conference wins here and there. Of course they would hire from within, their system is in place and it's working. Ours is really not. Not sure why you would struggle with that example. The goal would be to win at a consistent level and hire from within. If we don’t win at a consistent level then certainly isn’t the case. If you hire from within AND have measured success then your program marches on. If you have a wholesale change, then in my estimation you’re set back 3 years minimum. The goal is continuity.

We haven't had any kind of success worth continuing at this point. That's why the example doesn't work. I'm not really interested in continuing the results we've had lately. NDSU is what we should aspire to be, continuity of conference championships and playoff runs, not .500 seasons on a good year. We are past the opportunity for a wholesale change, with Herbster talking about a contract extension for Bob. But I am genuinely curious, how much time is enough time before you pull the plug and start over? If it takes 3 years to rebuild, we should have rebuilt twice by now under Bob.

If the OC is/was to become the new HC, why is our DC listed as Associate HC? That's who's in line I'd think. True, but it seems like that "AHC" label in the past has been used justifying a higher salary for an assistant who is either an ace recruiter, or a really, really good position/coord coach, rather than "next in line" necessarily. Its often used to just keep someone good in the fold at a higher salary, IIRC. The whole "OC with next in line for HC" thing was not based on any inside information, of course. It was just wild speculation on this board IIRC. Probably earlier in this thread. At least one insider referred to this possibility. No other explanation for keeping Bob makes sense. He is going to be out of the profession soon no matter what. Why are we continuing with this staff if they aren't winning and aren't the future? P.S. Can't wait for the team to have an improved record next year because of the significantly easier schedule. It will totally justify Herbster's lazy decision to keep Bob.
