Well, how do we feel about this gentlemen? My first impression is cautiously optimistic. I think he has the resume for the position and the success I was looking for. I'm a little concerned about our rival knowing his route concepts but it's probably an overreaction on my part.
My biggest hope is that he figures out how to get the most out of the players we've got, because after watching some of that game on Sunday I am still not convinced we have the athletes to beat either of those teams on a regular basis.
Welcome coach.

Nice. He knows how to move the ball at this level. I’m just glad the wait is over.

Welcome coach. I thought we beat them last year? Were we beating NDSU at halftime ? I don’t think we are far off athletically…the players were handed a mess this year, a tough schedule and some tough breaks. We have talent here.

We're good enough to beat them on any given day if we catch some breaks but we aren't going to beat them more than 3 or 4 out of 10 games. I hope I'm wrong and the coaching was holding our guys back but we have to get better up front on both sides of the ball. We're not physical enough.

Pathetic hire. Dude has the same position as he had in 2009? And this is perhaps our HC in waiting? Yikes.
Fully believe that Herbster does not care anymore. Bringing Bob back was a strong indicator, then hiring whatever former assistants to coach our basketball teams, but this OC hire drives it all home.
I had thought Herbster was best in the league for years, but it is time for him to leave. He has lost touch. Too bad we can't buy anyone out and he will get to coast as long as he wants.

I disagree. I think he is very qualified for the position and will do a good job. What I can't wrap my head around is the SDSU connections. I mean he's been a blue lifer, so it seems odd, strange, weird (insert your own adjective) that he'd end up at USD. Kind of like Farve playing for the Vikings. He has my support though and hope he's very successful.
On a different note, both our basketball hires were good hires. I'll take that to the bank.

Specifically, who would you have hired? Have you had a conversation with Herbster and the coaching staff to understand how the process went, who else they looked at, what our budget was, and how he is envisioning the athletic department developing over the next 5 years? Did you read Davis’s bio to see where he was 2016-2021 and what he accomplished? Weirdly strong criticism, even for a message board. Maybe we should give him and the basketball coaches some time before we give out a final grade.

I’m sure it’s going to be an adjustment for him as well, but I’m guessing he’s going to nearly double his salary. Plus, there’s probably not many other outsiders who have a better understanding of our actual roster talent than a rival coach. Lifelong rival or not, this is probably the opportunity he’s been waiting for to continue his career growth at the division 1 level. Not long ago, we had one of the best FCS offenses and I believe we can get there again with him.

I think that David Herbster is much more of a big picture guy than some on this forum give him credit for, and although I don't always agree with him, I have the utmost respect for him, and will support him to the end. The recruiting landscape in college athletics has changed in recent years, and USD's athletic successes have all been followed by mass exits by our coaches and players alike. A few names that come to mind are; Craig Smith, Amy Williams, and Dawn Plitzuweit. Each of these coaches came into Vermillion, did their job, and moved on when the wind changed direction. The complete dismantling of our WBB program hit hard...very hard, and I don't think that Herbster wants to ever see anything like that again if he can help it. That said, it appears to me that the importance of hiring someone who is intimately familiar with USD, Vermillion, the region, and the conference are just as important as their rap sheet. Let's face it, we not only want to win, but we also want some form of long term stability and I think that a hire like this exemplifies the long term goals of our program. I may be wrong, but like all of you, I'm hoping that we've made it through this rough patch and have brighter days ahead.

Doesn’t the HC make assistant hires exclusively? I mean, if an AD wanted to dictate the process, they probably could, but that’s not typical.
Bob made this hire, so why are we still talking about Herbster?

Our offense has been very vanilla the last few years and I hope now will have a lot of motion, multiple looks, etc to keep defenses guessing which will be great!!
Hopefully we can pu some more recruits and portal transfers in the next month and be ready to ROLL!!

Long term stability is only a good thing if there has been success to maintain. I'm not sure the recent history of Coyote football is something we want to stabilize. We had Streveler, outside of that there has been very little to be happy about in the last ten years. I'm remaining optimistic because he's had success at this level and apparently knows how to set up a championship winning offense, but this wasn't really the exciting hire I was hoping would bring some energy back to the program.

Welcome to the flagship University of South Dakota, Coach Davis!
Painting Frisco RED would be a vast improvement from the past decade or so.
Congrats, and oh yeah, congrats for, apparently something you did on Sunday, so anyway welcome to Vermillion!
