If lack of talent and experience means we lose against the Jacks by 30-60 points, then why aren’t we last place in the conference? It’s partially true, but partially an excuse. AJ is out-coaching the crap out of us, too.

Because in many other conference games Larkins and Duffney can make enough happen matchup wise to overcome some deficiencies. Not so much in this one.
And yes, AJ is probably out coaching his far less experienced and accomplished counterpart. But that’s not really unexpected at this point.

The problem is next year is essentially year 1 again. None of the players out for injury will be up to speed enough to beat sdsu with this staff at this point. SDSU reloads and I fully expect them to run away with it again next year, but with maybe only a 20 point loss at home.

AJ is out-coaching the crap out of us, too. You know that SDSU's average margin of victory in conference sits between 20-30, right? They just beat NDSU in Fargo by the same margin as today. Outcoaching, lack of talent, whatever words are used, SDSU's women have essentially an entire team back from a season that challenged USD until Summit championship. We're not "last in the conference"-level. We're still in the upper half with a generally inexperienced team and a new coach missing most of the players she retained for this season. No, we're not Sweet 16 level (and whoever would trade that in, I will be happy to remind you of that the next time we make it there). But let's not catastrophize about our program yet. We're still capable of winning a game, maybe two, in Sioux Falls.

We're still capable of winning a game, maybe two, in Sioux Falls. When have I ever said anything about the Sweet-16 this year? I've been one of the patient ones. I just don't understand how we can look so completely and utterly inept in this game. Yes, the Jacks are averaging a 24.5 point margin of victory in conference play. And we have lost by 59 and 31 points. So by that standard we are below-average in the conference. I'd like to think we are better than that. I wasn't expecting a win today, but I was expecting to look like an upper-half Summit team. Maybe we just aren't that. Or maybe AJ pulls the reigns a little bit in some of these contests, but not against NDSU and USD. That would make sense, I suppose. If that's the case, the Jacks had better make the Sweet 16. Anything less would be a let-down for them.

I'm still a believer in the KK hire. I think she is a great recruiter (critically important), and a great relationship-building coach. and she has assembled a great recruiting staff. I still think we have a lot of talent on the team. I agree that the injuries are a huge blow, and a huge limiting factor on our ceiling this season. I'm a huge believer in the talent and upside of much of our roster. I believe we have built-in advantages over most of the conference in AD support, fan support and facilities.
I'm just tired of us and the staff constantly pointing out those disadvantages as the only reason we often under-achieve. Are we still a good development team? Are we a well-coached team? I hope so. Jury's out for me.

Jury's out for me. We are not a well-coached team. There has been exactly one moment this year where I have been objectively impressed by coaching, either in game planning or in-game decisions. Could it be players not listening or being incapable of execution? Maybe. Can coaches improve? Sure. Ultimately we won't know definitively for a few years. I really struggle to think of our program as on-the-job training after the success we've had, but that's where we are today. It's going to be a rough few years regardless of how we come out the other side.

didn't do a very good job protecting the rim inside but just couldn't make wide open 3s

Once again, even when you get past the talent and experience issues against SDSU, this is above and beyond a terrible matchup. Defensively they have no answers. Their lack of length is really glaring against that team. They have to help on about every possession and they aren't organized or trusting of each other to do it effectively.
I did feel they played with much better pace offensively in the 2nd half. But one thing is definitely fair criticism...some of those threes in the first half were rushed or challenged...but some weren't. Ultimately, you don't shoot that poorly if you are shooting confidently. They obviously weren't.
Now we have a similar situation after the first beatdown. Let's see if they respond. Lose the games next weekend and start booking your calendar for Friday afternoon at the Summit tournament. Win a couple of games and give yourselves a shot at 3 or 4.

A game like this could happen to any team. For the past two seasons, it happened to the Jacks, in Vermillion…. They even got beat by Omaha at the Falls two years ago…. Is anybody saying that AJ is a horrible coach because that happened? No. They had an experienced coach and team, and they just had a bad game. Yes, this team is inexperienced, yes, this coach is new. They will get better, they will have a better season every year if / when they have experienced talent that is not sitting on the bench with injuries. This team has been competitive in a lot of games this year, and to be honest, they won more games than many of you expected at the beginning of the season. Give them a chance. You claim to bleed red, it’s time to prove it by supporting your team in the hard times.

It's just not the level of play we've seen the last 10 years and it's hard to accept. Our standards are probably a bit unreasonable but most of us understand this year was going to be a transition. My real struggle is the lack of accountability we're witnessing. Past teams have held themselves and teammates accountable and they truly played FOR each other. Then again, many of those girls played together for years. We will have better days.
