I’m not personally sad about it. She had big shoes to fill here after Dawn but imagine the shoes she has to fill now in Green Bay. I’d be fine with Mike and I’m fine on Thiess from Mankato. Both have the experience that we need for this program. For the love of all things USD though please hire someone who knows how to coach defense.

My next question though is if she knew she was leaving how did we land the transfers and recruits that we did? The timing of things seems odd.

I watched Mankato play this year and that is how you play defense. Jewett and the rest can go with Kayla and we would be better off. We need Thiess.

I watched that championship game with Mankato and I agree. Thiess definitely had the players buy into her style which was attack, attack, attack. Knowing nothing more other than having watched that game, I would love to see that kind of aggressive mindset brought to USD. How successful it would be with our next year's roster is the question.

Just looking at Theisse's bio on the Mankato site... msumavericks.com/staff-directory/emilee-thiesse/145She seems to have at least one thing in common with what Kayla was trying to do: up-tempo high-scoring offense. On the defensive end, her teams seems to have led the conference in turnover margin and steals for most of her career there. I'm guessing (will look later) that her scoring defense wasn't necessarily highly ranked, if she was running a high-tempo style. Just goes with the territory. You are both giving and getting more possessions. Ball control, rebounds and turnovers is how you leverage your defensive advantage, not total points. If she's been doing this for a decade there, and has had a good deal of success in the last three seasons, so it's fair to say she knows exactly what she wants to do, and how to do it. Basically what we had in Coach P. At that point it's just about getting the right players for her system. Do we have the right players? Definitely Grace fits that mold. Another parallel with Coach P: a D-II national championship. So why were we not looking at her the last time around? Her W/L record hit a lull mid-career at Mankato. Her best seasons were her first 3 and her latest 3. Is that a potential red flag? I guess I don't know. Hard to ignore the national title, though. I'm guessing if we don't hire her, someone else will. Oh, and by the way: her name appears to be pronounced "TEE-see", you know, like the helicopter pilot on Magnum P.I.

I won’t speak to Theiss’s coaching style cause I don’t really know. But I will say that when Mike was on the floor as general the team looked more calm, cool and dare I say happy to be playing compared to when Kayla was coaching. That to me speaks wonders. Were there struggles still yea but he still had to work with what he had.
Also, fanatic, you’re obviously not very in tune with his background and skills if you want to kick him to the curb. He’s arguably the main reason our season made any progress. He was brought in with the sole purpose to provide experience to an otherwise inexperienced staff.

Speaking to Mankato’s struggles 6 years ago… I do know they had a couple very highly ranked recruits from our high school, both of whom could have played mid-level D1 basketball. However, one of them changed her mind after arriving on campus during the summer, and instead went to D3 Gustavus (academic reasons), and the other left after one year to go to a D2 in Wisconsin.

Emilie being Amy William's sister and a west river gal from Spearfish are two points in her favor!
Full disclosure....being I'm a west river guy.

I'm probably a little biased towards (edit: like, in favor of) the Gusso clan but I'd think either Thiesse or Jewett would be great hires. I can't imagine if it came down to the two of them that Thiesse doesn't get the nod.

At the end of the day it’ll come down to who wants the job. While I like to think we are an attractive offer we have to ask ourselves does Emilee want to move on from MSU. Most would say yes but she’s got a great thing going there so she might be reluctant to go. We’re an increasingly hungry fanbase looking to get back to the top, that’s a lot of pressure considering you basically have to rebuild it again. Same with Mike he might not have any interest in the position either, although I think that’s who should take over.

This news seems to end my pipe dream of Lily Hansford in red though.

I want to see them vet an entire careers performance vs just the recent season. But the trends point in the right direction so whatever changes happened around 2019-2020 seem to have worked for them.
