Regardless who ends up getting hired, I like the fact that we have two solid options right off the bat. The longer a coaching search happens, the more likely you start to see players and recruits getting uneasy and looking at other options..... especially in this time frame right before the portal deadline.

Schemmel hired a search firm, so I wouldn't expect a resolution in the next week.

I for one am not one bit sad to see Kayla gone. She may have been a good assistant coach, but head coach...NO, at least not yet. There is at least one other on that coaching staff that isn't good for the team's growth and inspiration also. I agree with yote18, Mike brought calmness to the court. The ladies respect him, are happy and want to play for him. Let's hope he wants the head coaching job.

Can we immediately offer Mike the interim job with a non-guaranteed contract though next season just in case while also allowing him to interview for the official job? That would pretty much guarantee a year of continuity with great possibility of further continuity, or a home run hire.

I would have zero issue with Jewett as the head coach. But, realistically, what are the chances a 50-something male is the admin's choice for the job?

Mike is probably more likely to stick around for longer if he has success compared to a younger coach. While it’s great to have coaches find success and move up it’s not necessarily something we can sustain long term. If he can coach and he wants to stay I don’t see why gender or age should even be a factor. But I agree I’m sure the school wants that wow factor which always seems to get us a coach for a few years and then they bolt.

I wish Kayla all the best at GB and thank her for her time at USD!
She came in replacing a great, experienced coach and to a fan base with very high expectations (and rightfully so).

With a coaching change does the portal open up for 30 days for our players? Past the may 1 deadline?

She wants to go home Green Bay is the class of the league. The Horizon is a step below the summit didn't look like many fans at their conference tournament. We got rid of 2 teams to that league . the USD job is attractive as we pay better than most mid majors. Looks like we will have good candidates . Not sure when this came down I talked to Kayla at Sioux Falls Friday and she told me how pumped up she was with the talent coming in. One of the staff told me it was the best job ever loved it here hope she gets a job in Green Bay . that the bad part new coached bring in their own people. I like Mike for the job. breaking news Augie just hired a coach

I don't have any direct insight, but from pieces of conversations, I think Schemmel has a list of candidates, and Coach Karius was under pressure. The GB job opening was likely a win-win.

Hire the best person for the job. Jewett is in tune with the players, he's highly respected in the locker room, he's a proven recruiter and, as has been said, is more likely to stick around.

I don't know if should or shouldn't is going to matter much.
Of the 27 D-I coaching changes ESPN is listing in their latest article, 24 of them are filled by a woman. Brooks from VaTech to Kentucky, Haney at G'Town (interim to head after previous head coach died) and Poppie at Clemson are the outliers ... and none of them fit Jewett's demographic.

An offer should already be being made to Thiesse. Let's get this done before the weekend.
