I don't know that the idea that we should already be making offers to anyone makes much sense. This just happened yesterday. Urgency is one thing but making an offer one day later seems like a panic move.

I’m not sure how it works at South Dakota, but here at the University of Minnesota they have to post the opening for a certain amount of time. Yes, a good Athletic Director always has a short list in his back pocket, and would immediately reach out to some of those people when an opening appears. In this case, I would guess that he has both Thiesse and Jewett on his list. But they do have to follow protocol for the vetting/screening and hiring process.

Also have to remember those are just the two known potential options. We have no idea who else is on the AD’s radar. But while we’re here who else do we think could get some consideration?

hoopsmom is correct. The protocol/rules have to be followed. Vetting process also. We all hope we don’t lose the incoming freshman class or Grace. Trust the process!

I hope Jewett is back on the Coyote bench next year and would be fine with whatever chair he is sitting in.

just get someone that wants to stay here Agree, however this is easier said than done. I’m sure every candidate for the job expresses that they want to be here for the long haul and lo and behold something always comes up they can’t pass up. I’m not sure how we combat that. I just hope whoever we get next knows how to build team culture. I felt that missing most of the year. I feel for these girls. Not easy having to adjust to new coaching again so soon.

The nice part is, I think this job is more attractive now than the last time it opened (lost all 5 starters). This team returns 1 of the best players in the conference, and has lots of players that played big minutes. Hopefully the new coach is able to keep the incoming recruits/transfers too!
I think the top 2 options are the Mankato Head Coach and the Idaho Head Coach. I think Mike is behind those two options.

just get someone that wants to stay here Let’s not act like we are desperate, or anything. Having a top-shelf coach stick around is pretty rare. AJ staying at State very nearly didn’t happen, and now it seems as though he is black listed due to being male. Rare situation of a great coach staying at a mid-major. We shouldn’t compare that situation to ours. All things being equal I’d take a great coach for a few years over a mediocre one for a long time. I wouldn’t take back our time with Amy or Dawn, just because they left. Both of them elevated the program. Just get a great coach, and whatever happens happens. JMO

An old business mentor gave me some very good advice as I was beginning to make a go of it with my startup some 30 years ago;
He told me to invest heavily in my employees, and make sure they had the proper training and opportunities to be the most successful they could be. When I asked why would I want to spend all of that time, money and effort into training them only to have some of them leave, his response was that I should more concerned about not setting them up to be successful and having them stay.
Same concept holds true here. Bring in the best coach we can, and set them up to be wildly successful. They’ll likely get the nod and move onto something bigger. Let it happen and enjoy the ride.
We know how much it stings to lose quality coaches like Dawn and Amy, but look at the fun we all had while they were here. Let’s do “that” again.

Both Amy and Dawn stayed a few years and accomplished a lot . Kayla only 2 years I think we were going in the right direction but who knows now

We might have gotten a chance to fix something that could have taken 2-3 more years to figure out without that gb job opening. To me there were more red flags than signs of progress. We scheduled a 20 win season, beat no one with a pulse in 2 years, had 3 starters leave with eligibility remaining, and the team looked better when the coach was at home. Honestly we will never know. For the girls sake I hope the AD knocks it out of the park with a new hire.

This is a great opportunity for the Coyotes. It was hard to tell if progress was being made or not, but to the casual fan it looked like we were walking in quick sand. The USD WBB job still has a strong brand as opposed to what it might’ve been if we continued down the path we were on. It didn’t feel like we had any “mojo” to me. My guess is the pool of candidates will be very strong, and that’s why timing is everything.
Some of you have referenced the young lady at Minnesota State. Or Coach Jewitt. Another consideration would be a top assistant at a Power 5 school that has had sustained success over a period of years. I would think a regional hire makes sense but then again Amy came from Oklahoma and Dawn came from Kentucky. However both had strong midwestern ties.
So really at the end of the day AD Schemmel will hire the best coach he can. Man or woman. I expect our program to rebound quickly with the renewed energy coming in. Funding it for success is key. Schemmel addressed that at Calling All Coyotes. We have to step up our game in many areas and do so quickly. I think we’re going to get a great hire.

Keeping a successful, young coach will always be next to impossible at this level. We are all invested emotionally in our athletic programs but coaches are not. They are looking out for their careers and the making the best life they can for their families. Success followed by advancement is only natural. Good luck to Coach K, but I don't see us holding onto the next coach either if we continue to improve. I'd rather improve!
