This was different than last couple coaches. it's not a move up I think USD is a better job this is her wanting to go home. Good chance for our new AD to hire his choice. Talked to him Friday. I think he going to be good for the yotes athletics

To preface, I think we should not take the exact same path that we just took with hiring Kayla, and we should, instead, hire someone with head coaching experience, BUT…
I wonder, if it came down to it, if Jason Jeschke, Aaron Horn, or Tandem Mays would be interested in returning to show what they are capable of.

Certainly no hard feelings towards Kayla here, she kind of did us a solid by taking this job. I'm sure part of it was going home, but a big part was knowing er days were probably numbered at USD. She had lost the team and knew it. They viewed Mike as the head coach and they could tell he was much more knowledgeable. That's why she was coming up with reasons to miss games late in the season and when she was there she was letting Mike coach the team. Both Mike and the Mankato coach are great options. Better chance of keeping Mike long term as males just get fewer employment opportunities in women's basketball. That doesn't mean we would be trying to hire a coach that doesn't have enough success to move on, it just means if Mike has the same success as the Mankato coach would have here he won't be getting the same offers to leave as she would.

Well now that the Coach K era has ended what did we learn and what do we know: 1. We were easily a top 5 mid major job in the country last time the job was open a. Administration hired a first year head coach who would surely need time to develop. Program would probably go backwards before it goes forward. Unfortunately I think Maddie K and Kyah W thought that as well. b. It was a colossal failure by the previous administration to provide on job training to a program with so much success. c. We paid a first time head coach a salary of a veteran coach. I understand there could have been title 9 issues but experience and resume of success should be important. We overpaid by about 100k 2. The conference is really bad and should not be terribly hard to be in the top 2. a. People say that NDSU and Oral Roberts are good teams but they have not shown any ability to beat a good team outside the conference. Very little gap to make up. b. SDSU is the only good team in the league. However last years team was probably the worst team in the past ten years to win the conference. To make it worse they were undefeated which demonstrates the quality of the conference c. We have beaten SDSU in the past by being the best defensive team in the conference and being very efficient offensively by limiting turnovers and taking quality shots. Yes we were the best defensive team in the conference even before Hannah S started to play. However she sure did help. d. We have always struggled to out recruit SDSU for South Dakota kids so we need a wide net to recruit from and more importantly a system to recruit to which enables us to compete. Playing fast and shooting lots of threes is not a quality system to beat SDSU. 3. In summary we dropped the ball in hiring a first year coach to an established program that pays very well. This is still a desirable job and we do not need to settle for on the job training. I was patient with the hire because I thought Coach K would grow over time and was committed to building her program. Major fail of time and resources by the former administration. I agree this may be a blessing in disguise and do not blame coach K for going home but now we have another chance to get this hire right. Go Yotes!

Seems like a lot of assumptions and speculation. I seriously doubt she was "coming up with reasons to miss games." That's a pretty damning and reckless statement, unless you really have some rock solid inside knowledge of the situation.

Wow. I didn't want that to be the case but I had the same observation at the time. He coached circles around her. Kayla may be a great person but I've seen high school coaches who were light years better in the x's and o's department. It's sad that it came down to that but, ultimately, I think we'll be better off for it. It will be sooner rather than later too. That being said, we have to get the next one right.

... That's why she was coming up with reasons to miss games late in the season and when she was there she was letting Mike coach the team. This one might be a bit of a stretch since storks don't actually deliver babies, and I'd be careful about violating HIPPA given your relationship to Coach Karius. Articles like this and this indicate a plan had been in place for months. Someone earlier asked about buyout. Kiyoat had previously linked the coaching salaries in a different thread which is where the following bit was found. According to the USA Today, the buyout as of 4/1/24 was $823,825. If you figure the contract year ended very recently (ie intro press conference was around April 10 2022) the buyout should still be $500k +

The simple fact of the matter is that whoever gets hired has to be able to find some ponies. All the X's and O's and coaching psychology and everything else everybody seems to think was lacking (and I don't have a clue if it was or wasn't) isn't worth a bucket of warm piss without having some bullets to load in your gun.
And being nine months pregnant and giving birth seems like a pass on the "coming up with reasons to miss games."

She gets a pass for missing games I think people understood and was happy for her and her baby. We need to move fast to make sure we dont lose players we have some good talent coming in and in 2025 2 good ones. One note calling all coyotes raised a record 603,000 . Our new AD gave a good speech if you want to win we need money. We were number one for 5 years in raising money in the summit, but now we are next to Omaha. I see good things with him in charge what a great hire

Heard from a very reliable source today that Kayla asked Mike to go to Green Bay with her. Fortunately for the Yotes, he respectfully and politely declined.

If mike does not get the head coaching job . The AD should sign him to a contract with a raise to stay with the program. The new head coach moving up to a big salary will go along with it. I think Mike and the Mankato state coach both were at SDSU together. My hope is for Mike to get the head job.

Whoever the new coach is, I want them to have the ability to hire the staff as they see fit. That said, if Jewett is not hired as the head coach, it would wise for the new coach to consider keeping him on board if he is interested.

This is a unique situation, and one that we rarely, if ever, encounter. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Like most of you, I'd hate to lose Mike and feel as though we need to find someplace for him, even if it's not the HC position. He's proven himself in the short time he's been here. Let's do everything we can to keep him with the program.

Gotta remember though he might also not want to remain or be the HC. If he really did decline Kayla it’s probably because he doesn’t want to be an assistant or uproot his life to move to GB both of which are respectable reasons. While I think he’s interested in it I don’t think we should automatically expect him to want the job. He would bring continuity but I think our biggest threat to the program at this point has moved on to greener waters.
