I'm thinking St. Thomas would beat Northern fairly soundly, but that's my opinion. St. Thomas hosts USF tonight, so you may have a game to compare to. All USF tonight with a 34-13 win over the Tommies. Interestingly enough Coach Glo and the Coo take on Northern next week in Aberdeen.

AD made the point at halftime that 2300 students attended the game, 500 more than previous games! Most would been gone on Labor Day weekend, so Thursday night game wasn't all bad!
Kudos to the return and kick coverage units!!
Obviously the two return TDs were great, but did disrupt some the offensive rythem.
Great game overall!!

Not really sure how I feel about that performance, TBH. There was clearly a big difference in the caliber of athletes, but we already knew that. In terms of execution, I feel like we left a lot to be desired on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, it's good we are just physically better football players because there were quite a few times they had us out-schemed. All in all, I think we stayed healthy and are 1-0. Can't complain too much but would have liked to look more crisp and put up another 2 or 3 TDs. Oh well. Use the couple extra prep days to get ready and go compete with Bucky. Fight South Dakota.

Interestingly enough Coach Glo and the Coo take on Northern next week in Aberdeen. USF went 3-8 last year. It seems likely that Northern is better than the Pioneer teams that we have brought in. Rolling over them 45-3 without going to the air much seems like a decent result. Probably going to do worse to Drake when they come to town.

I did not realize that 52 yard bomb of a FG (good from 60?) was our kickoff specialist Mata.
I missed the second half and am stunned to now learn that Leyland missed from both 38 and 32. Unthinkable after being perfect in 2023.

So far, Bouman hasn't been very impressive in the passing game. Maybe that's to be expected in game 1. Harsh. He was 9/12 with 2 drops and was never really allowed to have a pass heavy drive. We have some things to clean up, but our passing game ain’t one. Most his completions were short but we appeared to play pretty close to the vest. I was most disappointed in the pass blocking. I thought that was a larger issue than qb play.

Just about everything we did last night was short and i thoughthe saw ghosts after getting hit early. Pretty close to the vest

A lot of fair criticisms on the board after last nights game and I agree we have some things we need to clean up. But a win is a win and it was the first game of the season where there are a lot of high expectations for the team. In prior years we’d open with tougher opponents so I’m glad that our first game was against someone who allows us to jumpstart the teams morale with a solid W and to expose the areas we need to work on without serious risk of getting derailed right out of the gate.
In all honesty we won’t really know what our season is going to look like until we get to the MVFC portion as we go from a D2 to a FBS to Portland State and then to Drake.

NSU definitely exposed some weaknesses in our pass blocking. I assume those weakness are related to blitz recognition and communication, but I have no idea.

All in all, we covered the spread, avoided penalties, looked legit on defense after that terrible first drive, and our running backs were phenomenal. As mentioned above, our o-line is going to need to improve its pass blocking and the defense is going need to learn when to hone in on it’s aggressiveness so as to avoid broken plays. I think we’ll see a much more polished team against Portland State and Drake. Drake might be a blood bath.

Game was a dress rehearsal scrimmage that just happens to count as a W. Coaches can coach up the players on a few mistakes that stood out and make sure they are as sharp as possible for Wisconsin. Games against teams like Northern or against teams like Wisconsin don't necessarily predict what our performance will be in Missouri Valley conference games. Great to watch the Yotes again!

One interesting play last night was when Bouman took off from the pocket and gained 11 yards to get into field goal range. He looked more decisive about running, quicker and faster too.

100% agree that special teams TDs especially early in the game stagnates offensive rhythm but those were awesome. NSU played the total opposite of what our offense expected based off what they were doing with the LB pressures and playing post safety looks. It wasn't protection at times, it was they were overloading our protection with an extra LB. I watched their games from last year a little and their coverages were not what we probably prepped for during the week based off what I saw. Great adjustments though on the few concepts we did throw as the game went on vs what they were doing.
Defense shored it up after a shaky first series. Still need to work hard on tackling in space as does every defensive player in the country. NSU didn't really provide too much of a challenge with their offense especially with their coach choosing to run the ball all day and shorten the game.

We got the win, didn’t play down to our competition. But…. Those unis slapped so hard!
