This is my first time posting! Been a long time USD fan and a silent member of the pro board for years! The last two WBB games have been tough for me to watch! In reviewing the stats posted in earlier thread, it baffles me that the point guard is shooting 31 times in a game!!! Where is the ball movement? What made coach P’s teams so successful is the ball movement, defensive strategies by everyone on the court, the hustle by all the players for jump balls, and the incredible control all players had on the pace of the game! In thinking about the sweet 16 team, the starting 5 were elite players and the other 10 players coming off the bench learned from them and also competed at a high level! Every member of that team was valued by coaches and their peers! I believe the new coaching staff will bring us out of the slump but it may take a few years of solid recruiting!

I agree. I can't imagine having to post over there. Hold up - that could be interesting. USD then gets Selland? Would the Yotes also get Miller? I don't remember the timing of recruiting classes from back then. (Probably more of an off-season what-if thread)

I don't remember the timing of recruiting classes from back then. (Probably more of an off-season what-if thread) ooh that's a good one. IIRC, Selland was still deliberating between USD and SDSU when Amy left,... and that pretty much sealed it for her. I think I remember her commitment to SDSU happened within a week or two of the announcement of Amy to Nebraska. If you remember, the Husker AD had to make a second offer to Amy - the lowball offer wasn't accepted. Amy mentioned in her intro speech that it would take a special opportunity to get her to leave USD... I think she saw the opportunities and potential of both Duffy and Selland, and must have had a decent shot to get both of them at the time... All speculation, of course. Imagine THAT team! The duality of being a "great career launching" school. Cycles of great coaches that don't stay. Well, I still feel pretty good about the Eighmey hire. For her to leave, I think the program will have to be built back up pretty well again. If that takes a few years, so be it. She has a track record of excellence, so I'm not worried. We probably should have just hired her the last time around. Hell, she might turn out to be a lifer here.

This is my first time posting! Been a long time USD fan and a silent member of the pro board for years! Welcome to the non-silent side! I hope you keep posting, the more the merrier! The last two WBB games have been tough for me to watch! In reviewing the stats posted in earlier thread, it baffles me that the point guard is shooting 31 times in a game!!! Where is the ball movement? Yeah, the "Larkins Paradox", as someone said earlier in this thread.... needs to get figured out. When she is having success, it's hard not to keep feeding her the ball, ... but it seems to make others complacent? Players need to emerge and develop, or we will be even worse without Grace next year! All true, but I'd also say that Coach P's motion offense was not an easy thing to learn. Players typically blossomed in year 2 and 3 offensively. In the 2017 season our offense was basically Allison Arens slashing to the basket (not unlike our Grace situation now). When a team could stop AA, we struggled to score sometimes. We ended up finishing 4th, and that team did not lack for talent or size/athleticism. The Yote dominant D started in Coach P's year 2. If you look at Ciara Duffy's stats, she steadily increased in Assists/TO, scoring, and many other stats throughout her career here.
I guess what I'm saying is that even great coaches with talented teams can take a season or two to find their stride.
I believe the new coaching staff will bring us out of the slump but it may take a few years of solid recruiting! Agree, but I think we will see some improvement this year, and more improvement next year. Some of it is just players and coaches figuring out each other, I think. This roster has SOME talent on it. Especially on Offense. Definitely enough talent that we could easily be 3-0 right now with some better effort and coach/player dynamics.
What the coach wants to do, vs what our roster has the ability to do seem to be two different things. Coach Kayla wanted a Drake-style Oklahoma-style fast-paced hot-shooting team with players recruited for the opposite. Now we are going back to a slower-paced, defense-focused and ball-control focused philosophy, with some players recruited by Kayla, and without some players run-off by Kayla (post players).... IDK. They will need to find the common ground. When our shots are hitting we look pretty good....

My guess is we are probably undervaluing how good Grace really is. Grace was able to play some extremely valuable minutes in a sweet 16 game and played very well. Her role would be different but she is an extremely talented kid and would find a way to play. Hard to believe you consider Bradley a great defender. That is almost comical. Secondly Chloe and Ciara both developed into very good defenders but surely did not begin their careers as good defenders. It takes time, hard work, strength and good coaching. That was a fun team but I think Grace would find minutes. 1. You're right, I may be undervaluing how good Ms. Larkins really is and I don't mean to do that at all. I think she's a phenomenal player and I think I've been pretty consistent in saying that. When I earlier compared her to Russell Westbrook, I mean that in the MVP, triple-double, All-NBA most respectful way possible as I am a fan of both. She's utterly relentless in attacking the basket and a phenomenal rebounding guard. She would carve out some kind of role. I'm not exactly sure what or how, because to be real honest, what she does probably was being done better by Arens and Duffy ON THAT TEAM and she'd be the weakest perimeter shooter of those seven players ... but she would have carved out some kind of role and greatly enjoyed the spacing that team, with three of the greatest Coyote shooters ever in the lineup and three other above average ones, would have provided her in terms of driving lanes. 2. I don't know where I ever said I thought Bradley was a great defender. I think I said all six "played a little D too." Obviously Arens, McKeever and Trimboli were the ones doing the heaviest lifting on that end of the floor but that team, as Kiyoat has pointed out before, was a very good defensive TEAM. I remember them frustrating the hell out of Miller and Guebert at Frost that year. 3. I think Grace Larkins is a great player. A great player. I love her competitiveness and determination and think she's obviously a Yote all-timer.

Outside of Grace, we are not fast or overly athletic. Some of our decision making is head shaking. And that’s coming from girls that have been playing major minutes the last few years. With Carson sidelined, we lose some length defensively. Wilke should continue to get better and hopefully give us an inside option on offense. I’m glad to hear they are thinking of bringing a freshman out of redshirting. If they are even remotely close to being able to go, I say get them going get developing them, get them some valuable learning minutes. Zero development happened for the team the last two years, girls were playing positions that did not match their ability/skill, culture did not appear to be a priority and was left up to the girls to develop, many girls felt unvalued regardless of their role on the team, communication was lacking or very confusing. Because of that we are missing cogs that would be very helpful this year. I know without a doubt the mess that was left was not one I would have wanted to step into lightly. Here’s hoping that Coach Eighmey has the fortitude to see this through and to right the ship. We didn’t get here overnight and we are not going to get back overnight.

Kayla set this program back 20 years. Worst hire ever and now we have to pay for it 20 years might be a stretch in today's NCAA. Your second statement, while really bold, might be true. I think there are a lot of us that feel the same.

OMG, I have lost two long posts by clicking the space bar it would seem.
Is activating a redshirt, presumably Karley, going to solve our lack of a post and height against other teams’ posts? We gave up 34 points to that girl last game. Meanwhile, our three tallest players sat on the bench. How could it hurt to give Sophie and Ruthie playing time? I don’t get it. Why is Sophie on the roster if she is not going to play when we need post defense? And even more so, what does it mean that Ruthie is not ready? How can a top 100 player who gets a year of development not be ready for any minutes? Is she nursing an injury? And why not play Gabby more? So, is Karley better than each of these three girls and can solve our lack of post play?
The thing is, we need to figure something out. We need to use our tall players to counter other teams’ inside play. These girls need to get playing time, and I don’t mean necessarily activating Karley.
One entirely other thing is we were concerned about the size of the freshman class plus Addyson. By redshirting four of them, then we will have seven in next year’s class. Do we redshirt the new class? What about the next year?

Nebraska is a top 25 team and we are struggling against much worse, no one realistically believed we’d keep it close. We’ll get back to the top someday but as you said the last regime set us back substantially and it’s going to take a while to rebuild.

We don't have the horses right now to use that game as any sort of measuring stick. Let's see how we fare against the middle of the Summit league and then we'll have a better idea of exactly where we stand. The reality is it's going to be a development year. It just sucks that we have to burn Grace's senior campaign that way.
