Shamrock, if your USD score holds up I'll probably be leaving the Dome with a little less hair, but I could totally see us missing a few EPs. Hopefully this game doesn't come down to kicking.
The Yotes should be amped for this one. Probably more so than any game this year other than Minnesota. Still, UNI is fast and will be in their element playing in a dome.
The Panthers have owned the Yotes in the trenches the last two seasons and I don't see much changing this year. UNI is tough against the run (ranked third in the FCS in rushing defense), so if the Coyotes want to stay in the game it will probably come down to whether Dante can evade the rush and make some plays happen. If he has another passing performance like last week, the score could be lopsided like last year, although hopefully not quite to the same extent.
I predict the Yotes will keep it close through three quarters, but UNI will pull away in the fourth.
UNI - 34 USD - 24

UNI will be a very tough game for the Yotes.
If the Yotes play like they did against the Gophs and Bison (1st half), they will win the game. UNI's front 4 are good and the O-line needs to keep them in check.
I'm rooting for the Yotes, UNI is the team everyone loves to hate and I hope the Bison can play them again this year.
Having them at home will be a big plus.
Go Yotes!!

Hey, guys. The posters on panthernation, bless their hearts, are a rather sedate bunch, they don't excited either way about anything, which means they are the polar opposite of those loud, red-azzed baboons on Bisonville. They do respect USD, as does The Cap'n.
Outside chance Mama Cat will let me make the trip to Vermy for the game. It's about four hours from where I live, just south of St. Paul.
Best of luck to both teams. I'm predicting -
UNI 26 USD 14
Edit: I see above one or two people posting about UNI being the team everyone "loves to hate", and I don't know why. Their fanbase is very calm, rarely do you find a UNI azzhole on any message board and, if it's the program we "love to hate", maybe it's simple envy. Regardless, UNI people are very modest, generous and gracious. You want schools to hate in the MVFC, I offer you NDSU (but you know that) and YSU.

I think the only poster talking about hatred for UNI is a Bison fan.
I don't think the fans at USD or SDSU dislike UNI.

You are correct JD, one of our Bison friends proclaimed UNI the team everyone loves to hate. Serious irony in that one.

This whole move to D-1 is so much more fun that I would have even guessed. I have supported Coyote athletics since I graduated and came to alot of games throughout the years.
Playing in the NCC was a privledge and memory I will never forget, but it does pale in comparison to what is going on today. It's just plain exciting each and every Saturday. We know we can compete with almost every team we play, and even though we are just in our third year of transition, the kids we are recruitting for D-1 have yt to develop for the most part.
I am sitting in my office making out the list for tailgating that I need for tomorrow. And thinking about all the friends and fans circulating about, and the excitement of playing UNI tomorrow after a 59 point shellacking last year is exciting. The DOME needs to be ALIVE tomorrow. LOUD and ALIVE.
As far as predictions, the brain says we haven't closed the gap by 59 points, but the heart and adrenaline running through my body says the kids are gonna play their asses off. Heart overrides the brain.
USD shocks the FCS ranks tomorrow in somewhat of an unbleieveable fashion.
USD 37 UNI 20

You're just making out your tailgating list??? Slacker. The back of my truck was packed and ready to go LAST NIGHT. We're going with 2 TV's and a satellite dish this week because I will definitely have the Iowa/Michigan game on but I know others who will want to watch Texas/Neb. Gotta have the dish to catch the early games on ESPN.
The big unanswered question of the weekend, brats or burgers? I know, we usually go bigger than that. I'll take suggestions in the tailgate thread. We do have plans for nachos on the grill, maybe we could go all Tex/Mex.
As for the game prediction...Yotes defend the Dome. Yotes win in a highly emotional battle.

I think the only poster talking about hatred for UNI is a Bison fan. I don't think the fans at USD or SDSU dislike UNI. In the NCC days, when UNI was in the league, the Bison/UNI games were hard fought games. Maybe the Jacks/UNI were not very competitive, hence the lovey-dovey attitude with Jacks fans...... ;D ;D ;D To win the MV, you have to go thru UNI. So naturally that is the team everyone wants to knock off. If there is a team to hate in the MV it is UNI, probably because of their success. Jacks have been mediocre for the entire life of their FB program, no smack intended. Now with some success, the Jacks should be a program that other team's fans want to hate. I don't hate the Jacks but want the Bison to kick their a**es!!!! Now, UND.......that is a different story....

USD is a funny team. Just when you think the Yotes have it all figured out they come out with a head scratcher. Just when you think things aren't looking so good they come up with a great game. When I think about recent Coyote teams I always think about when they played UNO in 2005. That year when everyone thought the Yotes had met their match and many thought UNO was going to defeat USD in the Dakotadome the Coyotes pulled out one their most amazing performance I have ever seen in throttling the Mavs something like 59-14. It wasn't even that close. It could have been 80-7 how dominant the Yotes were that day. Same thing later in the year against UND when the Sioux thought they were going to win. USD dominated the beggining of the game and held on for a still convincing win.
Even since Meierkort took over everytime a USD team was looked upon by many as a home dog they have almost always played very well and often blew out the team that was considered favorites.
My prediction is 30-21 Yotes and many UNI fans think it will be a 2 touchdown Panther victory. All those predictions are fine by me. I have no problem with any of them. The UNI people will read this and laugh but it's no laughing matter playing the Yotes in the dome when they have a chip on their shoulder. I really hope they have a huge chip and after feeling slighted at UC Davis they could have that huge chip. Just after losing big last year they should have a big chip.
USD could win this game big because they are a team that feeds off momentum. I don't think they will but they could. If Dante is on his game and Powell and/or Blount gets a step they have the capability to burn the Panthers deep. I just wish the Yotes had a Stephan Logan type that could keep the Panthers more honest towards the running game.
I need to get to the keys of this game.
#1 is to properly attack the UNI secondary on offense. Warren is going to need to be on his game and the receivers on theirs as well. The receivers need to run precise routes and to take exactly what is given to them but it's important to take shots down the field in this one but don't do it on third down and long when the Panthers are expecting it. Tradionally USD seems to have the most success down field on first down. I think first down is a key down for the Yotes to not try to just simply run the ball up the middle into the UNI brick wall.
Key #2 run the ball with creativity and use the short passing game as a method of running. This year USD is not going to line up and whip UNI between the tackles. They can try it but don't keep going back to it if it's not working. If it's not working cut their losses and use other methods. The Yotes need to do more outside running and perhaps some misdirection. I wouldn't mind seeing a wing type player get some carries or some short passes. The Yotes need to keep their options open with the screen pass and quick hitches. If the Yotes are hitting on those little plays it bring the secondary up and sets up the jugular plays down the field.
The Coyotes can control the ball on offense by throwing it. I would like to see USD spread the field alot. I said this last week and I can't really say I know how much they tried it but spreading the field allows for talented offenses to exploit mismatches and it makes it much easier to run the ball against a stingy run defense like UNI's. USD should be doing that for much of the game. Can USD go to a hurry up offense now and then. I don't know if I have seen the Yotes ever get into that this year.
key#3 Be prepared on defense. I have heard Ed state multiple times during his tenure that he wasn't prepared or the other team came out and ran plays that were out of the ordinary. Well, that is part of the game and part of outcoaching. There always has to be a plan B or C for every situation. If a team makes one simple adjustment and goes to the well with it time and time again make a counter. It's the old saying. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. In this game USD cannot be shamed by not being prepared in a game.
key #4, Act, don't react. USD needs to take it to the Panthers. Make UNI have to worry about what USD is doing and make them match up to what the Coyotes throw at them. UNI is a good team, but show the Panthers that they aren't just going to come into the Dakotadome and win by playing an average game. I would much rather be the aggressor and go down fighting than always taking the reactionary approach and always worrying about matching up to UNI. Play Coyote football and play it hard.

Really think it is up to the Coyote defense. If they come out and tackle well and keep that dangerous QB of UNI under control, it will be a very close game. I have to believe USD's offense will rebound from last weeks poor showing and put some points on the board. UNI's defense will be tough, but USD has a lot of weapons to worry about.
One thing is for sure, I think both teams will be hungry for a win. Should be one of the best games in the Dome all year.
Go Yotes!

Here we go, it's Friday, so I should prolly put up a keys to the game type of thing.
I am very concerned about this game. Yes, UNI is a bit down this year, but they are still VERY dangerous, even on the road.
The first key to me is the USD offensive line. They are facing a very good front four for UNI. The Panthers have only given up 324 rushing yards per game I heard, so the line will have to work to hold the line of scrimmage and try and open up holes. USD might have to run the option here, so it's VERY important for the line to hold the D-line in check and backers in check. Plus, they need to protect Dante and make sure he has enough time to get rid of the ball to attack UNI's secondary.
This brings me to the next point, the UNI secondary is suspect. USD can attack them through the air, whether it's short, intermediate or deep passes. So the USD passing game has to be clicking here, unlike last week. Go after this secondary like it's the University of Minnesota here. Take the shots on first down and second and 5 or short.
Next the USD defense has to find a way to contain UNI's quarterback. I want to say spy him with Shea Williams, but he gets juked out way to easily, so I think this one is up to Adam Broders, who is just a stud. UNI's QB is faster than Dante, so they really need to watch him.
However, the next point is for USD's defense is to be opportunistic. Newton (I think that's his name) is throwing under 50 percent right now and can put it up for grabs. USD has a couple of defensive backs - Freirson and Potter, that hopefully can take advantage of that, but all of the backs need to here. Win the turnover battle here in the Dome.
The USD defense also needs to cover the outside better on the run. UNI has a good running game, whether it's the QB or the RB, so it's important to cover the edges unlike what happened against NDSU.
Of course, the kicking game. The field goals both went through last weekend, which was a good sign, but now it's looking for consistency. I really like Robb, so I hope that works for him. He does have to get better on the kick-offs. Boot it deep and straight kid.
My prediction, I think UNI wins handily over USD. Sorry, I need USD to prove it to me against UNI after last year's whipping.

CF#1 I agree with your keys. I think the game last year at the UNI Dome was a bit of a fluke. UNI is the better overall program but that game was an exception to the rule. I think USD matches up well with UNI. My opinion still remains and always has been, I like the chances of USD when they are playing a run first team with their (UNI) biggest weakness on defense against the pass. UNI seems to be a very traditional midwest type of team. Can slug it out, can stop the run but struggles against diverse offenses that spread out and/or throw alot.
The Coyotes are not quite as good against the run as they have been but anytime USD doesn't have to try to try to create schemes to stop the pass I like their chances better. Stopping the run is easier with a pumped up defense and a good crowd than stopping a hurry up passing game spread offense. Maybe UNI will just spread it out who knows but I hope UNI's goal is to try to ram it down our throats with the run.
UNI is a good team but they aren't that much better than SDSU or NDSU. NDSU played them competitively on the road but may have beaten them had it been in Fargo. Same with SDSU, they haven't won at UNI but did have a break through at home against them.
The way I look at it UNI hasn't truley beaten the Yotes head to head until they do it in Vermillion. UNI wins good for them. USD wins and all it is, is home court holds serve in all games. I think UNI is good but if USD plays their typical home game, UNI will need to play very well to win. If UNI plays average and USD plays their typical home game I am taking the Yotes. Sorry to say but that is just the history of our program since 2004. USD has had too many instances where teams ended up getting much more than they bargained for when coming into the Dakotadome.

Coyote Fan, remember, NDSU and SDSU have played better defense than USD has this season basically. The best game was against a redshirt freshman led UC-Davis and North Dakota. It will be interesting to see how USD's defense does here basically. UNI is still a pretty good team and is coming off a shout-out.
