This could be the best team to ever come play the Yotes at the DakotaDome.
At this point in the season I could see almost anything happening.
The UNI QB is really fast. The USD coaches said just imagine Dante Warren and now speed him up more and that is the UNI QB. The OLine is big as usual. Ed said the UNI defense is also very fast and athletic. They must be tough too holding NDSU to - 40 yds rushing earlier this year.
The Achilles heel seems to be turnovers for UNI. They have had several devastating turnovers so far this year.
USD will have their work cut out for them. This would be a huge win for USD.
Let's fill the Dome with loud, tail-gate energized Yote Fans.

Panthernation.com not giving USD much respect. www.panthernation.com/showthread.php?t=35477After last year I can't blame them, but I just don't see UNI coming into the Dome and steamrolling the Yotes as many of their posters think. That has never happened under Ed, our 3 home losses under his tenure have all come down to the last play of the game. UNI still hurting about, what sounds like, giving away a game to arch-rival SIU. I don't think they regroup for this one. They waxed us at home last year, so probably expect to be able to just show up and win this game. Look for them to have a hangover. I like our chances. Especially if the O comes out blazing and the D keeps improving like they have been.

UNI posters should be smarter than to show such little respect. USD obviously has the capability to win. I wonder how many of them realise that Ed has only 3 losses at home in 6 years and of all the 3 losses none of them have been more than a one score game. The chances of UNI winning by more than a touchdown are actually not that great let alone winning at all.
The Panthers simply aren't as good this year. I hope the players are taking USD as seriously as their fans.

By the talk on this board, I don't think USD is taking Northern Iowa as seriously as they should either. The Panthers can put together a bunch of points, and yes, the defense may be down at times, it can still give USD fits with the pass rush.
I know Ed's record in the Dome, but the two losses on that record? Well, they should never have happened basically, so that concerns me, especially since this is the best team to ever come to the Dome. Right now, UNI has the advantage, because the Panthers looked better in their loss than USD, plain and simple.
I know UNI isn't giving USD respect, but don't bash UNI and say they aren't as talented in the past. UNI had a down year last year and put 66 on USD. This is still going to be a tough game.

What USD fan is not taking Northern Iowa seriously? It's obvious that UNI is a good team but so are the teams in the Great West and so is NDSU and the Yotes played tough against NDSU on the road until the second half. I think UNI is a slight step up from UC Davis and even a lesser step up from NDSU but they are a beatable team by proof of their 3 losses this year already.
I am calling this game a 50/50 shot. It wouldn't surprise me either way which team wins. That percentage can go up if the Coyote fans realise the importance of standing up and cheering on defense without having to be told or waiting for the 3rd down bell to ring. UNI biggest weakness on defense appears to be their pass defense which was the weakness on offense of NDSU and SDSU. USD's matches up better on offense against UNI than either the Jacks or the Bison or at least is would seem. Also SDSU and NDSU didn't have the advantage of home field.
My prediction for this game is...
Northern Iowa 20 South Dakota 31
I don't make my predictions lightly as I have picked against the Yotes plenty of times. When the schedule came out I predicted that USD would play their best game of the year this week against UNI. It will be tough to match the Minnesota effort but if the Yotes do I think they will win the game.

One more thought on game day. The Yotes are competing with the pheasant opener. What impact will that have on attendance? It is a 4 p.m. game, so it's not like both activities can't be squeezed into the day. I guess it depends on where one hunts. I know of several people hunting central South Dakota that day who would otherwise be at the game. I don't fault them. The pheasant opener is a major holiday in this state, but I do hope we have a great crowd in the Dome. Maybe on future pheasant opener home games, USD should organize a "blaze orange out," similar to a black out. Hey, blaze orange is as much a school color as black. Hopefully we'd have a metro-based, non-Midwest team in as the opponent. Make them think they've landed at redneck central. It's obviously too late to market that idea for this year. Just thinkin out loud here

I will never understand why anybody would rather go shoot stupid birds than tailgate, party, and cheer on the Yotes on Saturday. I mean, you have 2 1/2 months to go shoot birds, you get only 5, maybe 6 if lucky, Coyote GameDays a year. I see it as a no-brainer, go to the game Saturday. If pheasant hunting is that important, which I'm sure it is, I'm not anti-hunting, then take off work Monday and hunt away. Besides, if everyone is out in the fields Saturday shooting birds, doesn't it get a little crowded?
Rant Over. Advice to USD, don't schedule games that coincide with pheasant opener.
Yeah, I expect the attendance to tank Saturday.
On a positive note, tailgate lots are SOLD OUT as of the email I received the other day from the athletic dept. That's the good news.

I agree with Yote 53. How does the pheasant opener affect South Dakota so much but not Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota (not this year, that's the team sucking that is doing it) and North Dakota? All those states are pretty big hunting states as well, but their attendance is just fine?
This is up to the people of South Dakota to stop dropping the ball on this. I know people can still get their limits at the end of the hunting season just as well as at the start.

Many, many people from those neighboring states -- and from much greater distances -- pay out their rears to come hunt South Dakota. This place is a pheasant gold mine. Your preaching to the choir a bit; I'll definitely be at the game. That's my preference. But I also understand the opener mentality, especially in towns surrounded by primetime hunting grounds. Don't be mistaken; it's not all about getting a limit. There is very much a big party that surrounds those hunts.

I consider myself an avid Yote fan and attend home games whenever possible - generally the only exceptions are if my children have a game, xc meet, etc that conflicts, work (this really sucks, but does rear its ugly head on occasion) and opening weekend of pheasant season.
Yotemeal is right - it is much more than bagging your limit, especially if you live in the heart of pheasant country as I do. It is the weekend that all family, classmates, friends, etc come back for the weekend. Good times, good food, good drink and enjoying some great times in the outdoors. The only time, and maybe not even then, that more family make it back is Christmas. Since part of family went to SDSU a little banter back and forth is also a key part of the weekend. So hopefully the Yotes win over the Panthers and the Bunnies go to 1-5 on the year.
Whenever possible the Yotes need to schedule a road game for opening weekend of Pheasant season.

I'll rework this for you:
Yote53 is right - it is much more than a football game, especially if you live in the heart of Coyote Country as I do. It is the weekend that all family, classmates, friends, etc come back for the weekend. Good times, good food, good drink and enjoying some great times in the DakotaDome. The only time, and maybe not even then, that more family make it back is Dakota Days....
This can work both ways. I understand the mentality. I just think the mentality needs a little refocusing. I'm from the background where a person doesn't schedule a wedding on any college football weekend. Gameday is more important. If you want your guests to attend, don't schedule it on a fall Saturday, and don't be upset if they skip to go to a football game if you do.
To each their own I guess, I just think the whole pheasant thing is a little overblown.

With you on the whole wedding plans, heck I got married on a Friday and started off the honeymoon attending a Yote football game the following Saturday. You also never schedule a wedding opening weekend of pheasant season. (It would be the classic shotgun wedding)
Really do wish I could be at the Dome - as UNI is likely best football opponent ever hosted by the Yotes. I will be there in spirit, so have a pregame beverage for all of us pheasant hunting Yotes and cheer the Yotes to victory.

The college football attendance in neighboring states is not affected by pheasant opener because they have more people and fewer pheasants than we do. South Dakota is the Mecca, the epicenter, the end all, be all for pheasant hunters.
It's becase we are one of the last states that hasn't drain-tiled the hell out of everything (that is, until the Hefty brothers have their way) and we do more than any other state to build our bird numbers.
Opening weekend in South Dakota ranks up there with Thanksgiving and Christmas for most pheasant hunters. For us, it's more about family and friends you haven't and likely won't see all year except THIS one weekend. In our group of 20 we have people coming from 7 states.
I have 15 straight D-Days under my belt, far fewer than a lot of you, but I have double that for my unbroken streak of openers.
If I were tailgating this weekend, I would make it a point to have a beer with Yote53. He gets the job done and has a great crew of Coyote fans. Big weekend for USD. There will be a large contingent in Pierre watching on Midcontinent hoping we avenge the previous two losses to UNI. Go Yotes!
