Great game by the Yotes! I watched on the UNI site. I don't know if they archive it, but it is worth the price of admission as they say! I had a hard time following the ball on PATs and FGs, which added some tension, but just waited to see if Bergner was getting a bear hug to see if it was good! That pitch and catch Earl to Terry is a masterpiece, considering the situation. A breakout game for Riley Donovan. And for someone who doesn't get a lot of mention, A. Johnson had a great game, and is having a great season, a big reason T Starr is able to wreak havoc on D!
I've been excited about this program since Joe Glenn took over as HC. I took it as a positive that we were very competitive in 2012, without the wins. This recruiting class gave me a lot of confidence going into this year. And the way this team keeps fighting, keeps together, and keeps improving, it is coming together like I thought it would. This is a championship caliber program, if not this year, soon!
We're 3-1 in the Valley, with 2 games in the Dome........playoffs? Playoffs??? Who's talking about playoffs!!!!

Wow, couldn't be more proud of our coaches and players! Stupendous performance!
So many superlatives but just think how this win affects recruiting going forward.

After watching KELO's error riddled recap I noticed that both teams were wearing dark colored uniforms - our red on red and their priple and black. Isn't one team supposed to wear a light "road" colored uniform?

By the way, whoever "Yotes" is on the UNI message board, kudos to you for keeping it civil and fact based in the face of arrogant stupidity. You've shown greater restraint than most would. Puts a good face on our organization. I knew little about UNI until this week, but some of the fans commenting on their board are helping me to shape an opinion- regarding their fan base at least. Yours truly has been going around the internet lately representing USD as "Yotes". I tried to talk football with them, but they thought that was laughable. After the game I let them know what I thought of their arrogance and gladly left knowing they'd have to agonize over a loss to us. Mostly unimpressed with their fans, but that has to have a little to do with how an incredibly promising season has slipped between their fingers. I have a feeling I'd get a similar treatment any year though. I finally took the bait and posted over at panthernation.com. Have we ever been at the point where a visiting team comes to Vermillion, puts up 500 yards on us, and we refuse to give them any credit? I hope not and I hope we never are. And if there are a few rogue posters here who would happen to make some of the disrespectful and classless remarks that are being made at the UNI board, I believe the rest of would keep those posters in check. As always, GO YOTES!

Here are my thoughts after watching the game in Cedar Falls.
Offense
The USD OL only gave up one sack that I can remember - This is the best game I have seen the OL play since I have watched Coyote FB. The UNI defensive front is top notch and for the most part the Coyote OL kept them in check. Yes the OL had a few false starts and holds, but all in all great performance. I was surprised that UNI did not bring more pressure to get Earl on his back and try to rattle him.
Kevin Earl looked like an experienced leader out there. Superb decision making pretty much every play. He was throwing perfectly placed balls. He tucked and ran when the coverage was too tight and didn't take bad turnovers. Even the pick he threw downfield was on third down and was better than punting....
Bouma just has fantastic vision and an incredible motor. He ended up avg 5 yds a carry and was a perfect compliment to the passing game today.
The receivers stepped up as a unit. Donavan is a star and will keep getting better. His catches were clutch, big time plays. Willhelm had one drop, but made some great catches and runs with the ball. JVM had an impressive run where he spun out of a tackle and made a 20+ yd play as well as two to three very athletic catches. Terry got up in the air to catch the tying TD with 5 sec left. Huge play!
The offense played with a confidence that I have not seen since Wes was the QB for the Yotes.
Defense
After UNIs first drive where they scored in under 2 minutes to open the game the defense settled down and got to what they do best. UNI had a good game plan and really exposed some of our man coverage matchups (Our Outside LBers) UNI got them in one-on-one coverage and hit their receivers over the top down the numbers. USD adjusted and closed that down.
UNI's OL really kept the USD DL and Pass rush in check. Austin Johnson stepped up and showed his speed and athleticism running down thier QB twice. Big DL Praska got a key sack in the 2nd half as well. Huge play there our of a recently converted OL. Was crucial to have his size and strength up front, especially because Greer got knocked out of the game with what looked like a shoulder injury.
As expected UNI was either running away from Starr or double teaming him all game. I bet T Starr is exhausted he was being assaulted nearly every play.
The DBs were just about as good as you can hope for - the INTs were clutch. If Knox doesn't step in front of that pass at the end zone to end the first half, I don't thing USD can recover. The USD team speed and physicality is shocking compared to previous years.
Special Teams
two missed FGs - 30 yd fg from the center of the field and a 27 yard fg from the right hash.
two botched punt snaps that gave UNI the ball in USD territory, one time on the USD 14 - both resulted in UNI TDs in the second half. Without these gifts to UNI, the USD defense had a good chance of shutting out UNI in the second half. At most one TD.
The above is a 20 point swing!
Then on top of it, USD makes a crucial 3rd down stop on defense in the second half and USD has to burn a time out because there are too many players on the field for punt return (tons of confusion - USD players running to the sideline - players running from the sideline to the field) until Swift smartly called a TO.
The special teams coordinator is not getting it done. It is as clear as anything we have seen. Even clearer than the fact that JVM had to switch to receiver to bring in a passing QB.
This has to be fixed and if it is not - it will cost USD a chance to win the tough remaining games on the schedule.
Without the Special Teams miscues, USD wins by 10 or more in regulation.
The young kicker is struggling obviously, but he did rally to secure the win in the end. He will get better. Have to give him consistent protection and snaps and let him adjust to this level. (better coaching perhaps...)
Coaching
already covered Special Teams
Wes called the best game of his life offensively. He opened things up, had great balance. Was mixing up first down play calls. Kept the foot on the accelerator. Earl looked prepared, and Wes deserves credit.
Petrino continues to have his Defense achieving at a level USD has not seen on Defense.
Glenn - Could not be happier for the man. Has to be a huge relief for him and a rallying cry to keep the players focused, motivated, and believing in his program.
Farley - UNIs coach really comes across as a turd in his post game comments. Read the Sioux City Journal and judge for yourself. He did have his guys prepared which makes the victory sweeter.
Going forward is a new challenge for USD. How do you deal with Success? How do you deal with preparation when everyone is telling you how good you are? Do you bring the same passion and focus? I hope so.
The UNI win is huge and has the potential to be a watershed moment for the Coyote belief system. USD shrugged off some really bad plays that were self inflicted. They did not flinch, they just kept playing and believed they would win.
Fans
I can barely talk today, my voice is so sore. Think I did some vocal cord damage - well worth it. Most fun I have had at a game in years.
UNI fans were very funny before the game. Friendly but so dismissive of the Coyotes chances. Walking out of the UNI Dome was like being at a funeral. Nobody was saying anything. Just stunned silence.
So many USD players had huge plays that contributed to the win - it should be a boost to all of them. USD used every tool they had and beat a good team.
On to Normal Illinois to take on ISU. Will be another MVFC battle. Have to love it!

I was there and this was an amazing game! Being down 28-7 I was so bored, but stayed and cheered on the team with the hundreds of other Coyote fans. No lie, UNI fans were impressed by how many USD fans were there. Then when we pooch kicked it the momentum changed, along with the interception. When USD scored that last TD the dome got so loud with Yotes fans going NUUUUTS! Then when we stopped them and held them to a FG and kicked our FG I was freaking nervous. Then we moved to OT #2 and held them to another FG. I was nervous that we would turn it over or something but Trevor did what he does best.
This game was amazing. The players came over and started chanting USD with us and it was so much fun.
Ready to see what else this team can do! USD USD USD!!!

Isn't one team supposed to wear a light "road" colored uniform? That recap was so bad, not to mention they led with the horrendous State game instead of doing ours first. James Vander Maten? James Terry? I don't think I'll ever go to them for highlights again, just wait for Coyote Corner. We actually asked UNI before the game if we could wear our all red uniforms, and they allowed it. First two Valley wins came in those all red garments, and we didn't want to go away from a good thing. What do you know? It worked again!

Special teams are concerning. The current coach has been in this position over the last 1.5 seasons. Over that time we had a kicker that was 17-20 go to 8-14 with a few blocks. A punter that that had 3 blocks last year. This year it is a yard sale. Already 2 blocks and multiple bad snaps on punting and 8-13 on field goals. Believe it or not I will cut him some slack on that. However the 12 man screw up ( thankfully swift saved it with a to) is unacceptable. we need to replace as TT is not getting it done.

Well, Illinois State's home uniforms are all red. Perhaps we'll petition anyways and just confuse the heck out of everyone.

John Thayer mentioned on his call in show last night that there was a laundry issue with the white jerseys. Not sure what that means, but supposedly USD had to get permission from the director of MVFC officials and then UNI. If USD has white jerseys ready to go they will be in white next Saturday.

Hey was /is Jordan Roberts hurt? I just noticed in the box score that he didn't touch the ball at all yesterday. I wondered about that too, but I also have to wonder if they just weren't going to go away from Bouma considering how great he has been lately. If Kevin Earl doesn't get Valley POW I don't know who does. 5 total TDs, 370 yards passing. No contest.

Hey was /is Jordan Roberts hurt? I just noticed in the box score that he didn't touch the ball at all yesterday. He did play and was not sure why he didn't show in the stats. I believe he was the ball carrier early in the game when we fumbled and UNI recovered. The refs blew the call and blew the whistle early - ruled that (even though UNI recovered the fumble) USD would just replay the down. Of course a "make up" call occurred on a long USD run a few series later with a mysterious holding call..... Love the MVFC refs
