Figured this might be easier to follow for info and suggestions on who the next head coach will be in Vermillion. The Argus had a list of 12 possible candidates this morning: www.argusleader.com/story/sports/college/university-of-south-dakota/2022/03/11/12-candidates-replace-todd-lee-south-dakota-coyotes-basketball-coach-saul-phillips-greg-lansing/6996455001/Saul Phillips, head coach Northern State Greg Lansing, former head coach Indiana St. Tom Billeter, head coach Augustana Matt Wilber, head coach DWU Ben McCollum, head coach Northwest Missouri St. Jason Kemp, assistant coach Minnesota Ryan Miller, assistant coach Creighton Brooks McKowen, head coach Upper Iowa Eric Peterson, assistant coach Utah JR Blount, assistant coach Iowa St. Joe Krabbenhoft, assistant coach Wisconsin Sundance "Sunny" Wick, assistant coach WyomingOf these 12 only about 3 move the needle for me. Ben McCollum-will be in Sioux Falls this weekend for the NCAA regional tourney Eric Peterson- knows USD and the region for recruiting Ryan Miller- Big time recruiter, who knows if he can coach or run a program I like the idea of a younger, high energy recruiter coming to USD.

My big question is what type of timeline are we looking at here? Are we going to move quickly or wait until after the NCAA tourney?

My money is on Peterson. I think he would do well because he’s familiar with the program and has recruited the area under Smith. He’s young and relatable to players.
Beside him, I imagine McCollum will get a look. He’s built a power house in Marryville.
Lansing and Phillips are very intriguing to me, also.

I guess I'm just not real interested in hiring somebody from a lesser division, and maybe that's the wrong attitude. I'm in the P5 assistant camp. Go get somebody that has been a part of winning in the big stage.

Wicks would be a great hire IMO.

I think that the timing will have to depend on what coaches are available to interview (assuming they don't already have their guy).
Utah is done with the season Iowa State is done Wyoming is a "bubble" team Creighton will be playing for a while yet. Wisconsin will be playing for a while yet. etc.

Thought from Grand Forks maybe you add Paul Sather to the list. Been a long cold winter here. You can't judge him on his time in GF. You guys know his record at Northern. It's eerie here he may want out.

I'm fairly certain that a new coach had already been identified prior to the firing taking place. I wouldn't be surprised to see an announcement on the new coach be made early next week. I have no inside info on this matter, but this decision was clearly in the works for some time now giving the administration ample time to go on the recruiting trail for a new coach. Just need to get the formalities done and the contract signed.

I hope all our players and recruits stick around long enough to talk to the new coach, and both sides can decide mutually whether to stay. I wouldn't be surprised to see some movement, but who knows?

I think this has been in motion for some time and don’t expect a very long wait for them to announce the next coach.

Interesting to hear that Matt Zimmer who covers the Jacks, indicated that he had heard some rumblings about this happening. WTH!!
