I don't want Austin Hansen anywhere near the program. It is imperative that Coach K stays in Vermillion. Hanson has zero shot. I’m 50/50 on EP. I think there is a lot to like but I was hoping we’d go a different direction. You have to think Alan Huss for Creighton would be a slam dunk. Creighton lost every starter from last year, they got better as the season went on were dealt injuries along the way. I know mcd does some OC and DC type thing down their with his assists so I’m not sure if Huss was in charge of defense or not but their Defense was #1 in the big East and that’s with playing 3 freshman and a sophomore a ton of minutes. Huss would be my pick. Sounds like Huss is being strongly considered for the Omaha job

Word is Omaha is prepared to make changes to give them a more level playing field in the SL by offering full cost of attendance, not playing so many buy games in the non-conference (they had to help finance the whole athletic dept) and getting more time in their own arena (which they give up for hockey and things like USA Curling trials, etc.).

Peterson was at Williston not Minot. Since the general opinion is since recruiting has been so bad the players we have now are crap? Surprising we were able to win any games at all. Whoever comes in I hope he keeps Kasperbauer as an assistant. Look at what we have and what the rest of the conference has. This program should be in the mix for a title more often than not, rather than settling for a 5 seed because one guy was hurt.

I don't know - this would seem like a pretty good and obvious hire, right? Not sure there is much to talk about other than if key assistants can stay and keep some of the players/recruits.
Eric Peterson begins his first season as an assistant coach with the Utah men’s basketball team as he reconnects with head coach Craig Smith for his third-straight stint in 2021-22. Peterson comes to SLC having served alongside Smith the past seven-plus years in Logan, Utah, and in Vermillion, S.D. His roles at both stops included working with the post players, scheduling and international recruiting on top of his concentration in the Midwest, Texas and JUCO ranks. While at USU, Peterson was instrumental in the development of Neemias Queta – who recently earned AP All-America Honorable Mention accolades. The 7-0 center is a two-time Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year honoree while earning first-team all-conference honors this past season and back-to-back second-team honors his first two season. In addition, Queta was named the 2019 MWC Freshman of the Year. Nationally, the Barreiro, Portugal, product was nationally recognized, garnering the 2021 US Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District VIII Player of the Year award to go with a pair of all-district VIII honors by the USBWA. He was also name the 2020-21 National Defensive Player of the Year by BleacherReport.com. As a team, Peterson helped guide Utah State to three-straight 20-plus win season, three-consecutive NCAA Tournament berths and two MWC Tournament Championships. Their No. 8 seed in the Big Dance his first year with the Aggies was the highest seed in program history. His track record at South Dakota with Smith was also just as stellar, leading the Coyotes to back-to-back 20-win seasons, a regular season Summit League Championship and the school’s first-ever appearance in the Summit League Tournament Championship game. In the two seasons alone, South Dakota was 48-21 (.696) and 23-7 (.767) in league play, while advancing to a pair of postseason appearances in the NIT and CBI. He mentored Tyler Flack to a First-Team All-Summit League selection, and a pair of Second-Team All-Summit League accolades in Trey Burch-Manning and Tyler Hagedorn. Burch-Manning was also named to the Summit League All-Newcomer Team in 2016-17 after finishing fourth in the Summit League with 7.8 rebounds per contest during league play in his first year in Vermillion. Prior to joining Smith at USD and USU, Peterson served as the head men’s basketball coach and Director of Athletics at Williston State. During his tenure, the Tetons compiled an overall mark of 52-15 and captured the 2014 Mon-Dak Conference Championship to go with the 2013 Region XIII Championship. In his final season at WSC, the Tetons won 27 games, had their best winning percentage in program history and earned the program’s first-ever top-25 ranking. The performance led to Mon-Dak Coach of the Year honors and a pair of NJCAA All-American honors for Marquel Curtis and Trey Dickerson. Peterson is originally from West Salem, Wis., and graduated from UW-La Crosse with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He also holds a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in sports management and education from South Dakota. Peterson and his wife, Lindsey, have a daughter, Flynn, and three sons, Isaiah, Briggs and Bowen.
Peterson's Coaching Career Years School Position 2021- University of Utah Assistant Coach 2018-21 Utah State Assistant Coach 2014-18 University of South Dakota Assistant Coach 2011-14 Williston State Head Coach / Director of Athletics 2009-11 Minnesota State Moorhead Assistant Coach 2005-09 Williston State Assistant Coach

If I'm Herbster, my first call is to Eric Peterson. No question about it.
He has successful head coaching experience. He's won here. He's won at Utah State, and I'm sure he'll help build Utah into a winner as well. He's worked hand in hand for the past 8 years with the best basketball coach USD has ever had.
This would be a slam dunk hire by the Herbster, the athletic department, and university!

Whoever comes in I hope he keeps Kasperbauer as an assistant. I don’t think anyone is really implying that. I think there has been overwhelming disappointment at the lack of HS recruits that we have gotten though. To further that, we have also missed on 2 local kids- freidel and Bruns- that were in our backyard. I’m fine with transfers in today’s college basketball, but I think we should be pulling at minimum 2 recruits from the region out of HS every year. There’s a ton of good Hs players within a 5 hour drive of vermillion- MSP, Omaha, Lincoln, Des Moines, Sioux Falls, Rapid. So either we aren’t relating to those kids or we are lazy. Are we really still butt hurt about not getting Freidel? We dodged a bullet with him. Even with state trying to keep all of his BS under wraps, it's pretty clear to everyone that's even passively paid attention to that program that he's an off the court nightmare. There plenty of things to criticize about Lee's recruiting but that one goes in the win column as far as I'm concerned.

Are you going to argue that that kid wasn’t supremely talented coming out of hs? Larger point being, in state and neighboring state talent is not choosing usd, no matter how close, no matter what/when we offer.

Obviously I know about the anxiety/depression last year, but I never really did hear what the reason was for the sudden benching this year. I heard rumors that he asked the coaches for more touches and they didn't like that, but I have a feeling you must have heard a lot more than that.
In regards to Bruns, despite what has previously been said I hear we never even offered him. We tried to get him to walk on. Now that he's freshman of the year I'm sure an offer will be coming or has already.
In regards to candidates is anyone hearing anything other than Peterson right now?

He transferred out of Wright state late in the cycle and USD did not have any scholarships to offer at the time.

Heard through the grapevine that they are negotiating the details with their top candidate right now. Hopefully, we will have our next head coach announced soon. Let's just hope that the final details don't take nearly as long as they did when Neilson was hired. Of course, that involved changing state rules involving multi-year contracts.
