What seems to be this issue with line backing crew. Seems to me we have a problem with the secondary. The LBers are small - playing ok though. Guziec will be a solid MVFC LB the more experience he gets. He is a SO and has good size - 6'4 230lbs - has gotten better every game. DBs are all new with the exception of Swift. For the most part they are very undisciplined - busted coverages/penalties/poor game awareness. True FR Reaves has skills but has gotten worked over a lot by opposing teams - his inexperience has hurt. Losing Frierson this year was a very big loss. He was the best cover corner I have seen at USD in 30 yrs.

Disappointing there was no communication from Mick that the weekly chat was not happening. I know we can all do better as fans and participate on the chat more, but you would think the Argus could run things more professionally. I know TV posted online that the SDSU chat would not happen this afternoon - they moved it to a live chat from their exhibition BB games tonight. Mick could send out a similar message. Not a good way to build participation.
Well - hopefully next week.

The USD defense is not good. They have tightened things up a little bit, but they have been awful at times. I think Petrino has not gotten as much attention from critics because they have improved a little - compared to the offense which seems to have hit a wall and gotten less productive. In reality DCs have figured out to just play the run because JVM cannot throw accurately.
The other reason people are focusing on Wes is the fact that USD has had some high-scoring, productive offenses in recent history. It is noticeably absent now.

Just listened to the coaches show on the radio. I think Glenn is off. He said YSU is ranked 92nd in pass defense and top 10 in rush defense. After saying that he said he thinks YSU will be working hard on shoring up their pass defense for the game this week and we should expect a 7 man in the box front dropping 4. After watching USD what DC would be worried about USD's passing attack with JVM at QB? We will see a steady diet of 8 in the box - word is out - stop the run and contain JVM (keep him between the tackles) and USD will be three and out most series. I wanted to have faith in Glenn - if he puts JVM back in and we see the same result we have the last few weeks, that will be very disheartening. This fan has about had it - extremely embarrassing.
Go watch the replay of the game on ESPN3 and watch how the rest of the USD team responded when Earl got in. They stepped it up and visibly had a better intensity.

According to John Thayer JVM will be the starter this weekend. My confidence in this coaching staff is about as low as I think it can get if they do not realize a change needs to happen. YSU will be the worst pass defense we face in the MVFC this year. May want to have a QB play that can accurately throw to give USD a shot.
Seriously - does anyone on this board think JVM is the best option at QB?

Agree about the line play. I do think Tyler Willhelm has shown some good hands with the limited throws his way. He is a size and athletic mismatch for most of the LB/SS/FS that cover him.

JVM could play a lot of different positions.
For this year he could play some receiver (if he can catch) - that would be the boring option IMO. I would like to see the team use him very creatively in various formations. WR, slot, wing, backfield as RB, and as QB in a wildcat (wildyote) formation. Give the defense something else to worry about. Question I would have is - can Wes actually be creative enough?
Ed always said the kid would make a good FS too.

YSU has been on a skid the last four games. They have the worst pass defense of any Valley team we will play this year. I think YSU is a solid team and will be fighting hard at home this week to solidify a winning season and give themselves a slight chance to get selected as a playoff team.
If Earl gets the start and can play efficiently at QB and the rest of the team rallies with some new life - it could be close.

From today's Argus Leader - quote from Glenn:
It begged a question that USD coach Joe Glenn volunteered to answer without prompting:
“I don’t know if we have a quarterback controversy or not,” Glenn said. “I don’t know right now, but I know Josh has to do better than that. He just hasn’t played in games like I thought he would.” _________________________________________________________________________
Sounds to me like Earl will be the starter next week.

The coaches are out of their minds if Earl doesn't play next week. I don't care if he was going against 2nd teamers - JVM would not make those throws. More undisciplined play from the Yotes this week with predictable results.
On top of it - when a team comes out as flat as they did today I blame the coaches and leadership. Even worse than last week.
