In my opinion, we have no choice but to do the same if we intend to compete in the same conferences as NDSU. We are still paying the price (primarily not being competitive in football and in lack of fan support for other sports) for not moving to D1 at the same time as NDSU & SDSU and cannot afford to fall behind again.

Another shot fired across the bow of a leaky ship called college football. ND is simply using its competitive advantage to further itself as a football power and win more championships. Having a small set of schools winning football championships year after year - on any level - is not good for fans, and ultimately the sport itself. I can see a time in the not too distant future when only a handful of college teams will have a realistic chance of winning national championships at the FBS and FCS level. Blah.
Personally I'm tired of NDS but understand why they are doing this.

Good decision on USD's part.

Don't want to start a new topic for this, but NDSU and Montana are opening the college football season on ESPN right now a week ahead of everyone else. Tied 21-21 about six minutes until halftime. NDSU's defense has been looking very weak outside of goal line situations, lots of work to be done in their secondary.

Wow. The goal line defense for NDSU finally breaks on 4th and goal with two seconds left. Montana wins 38-35. What an entertaining game to watch and start college football off with. Down go the goalposts haha.
NDSU bringing in the first loss of the college football season is a welcome change. An experienced QB would have carved up their defense, Montana's QB was in his first career start - missing open receivers and having plenty of miscommunications. Even more impressive is that this was the first game as a D1 HC for Montana's Bob Stitt. NDSU is either going to have to score a ton of points this season or really shore up that secondary if they want to keep their title streak rolling.

The Bison have had their share of brilliant last minute comeback victories. This time they swallowed some of their own medicine. We know here in Coyote Nation plenty well how that medicine tastes that NDSU just swallowed.

What a fun game to watch on ESPN and congrats to the Griz on a huge win. Couple of thoughts on the game:
First, happy to see that NDSU looks beatable. I thought their secondary looked pretty poor compared to other Bison teams we've seen recently and thought the O-line struggled with #91 all day. Although they are huge, they proved they aren't unstoppable and are susceptible to solid pass rushers and players who can get in the backfield and cause problems. Seems to me we have a few of those guys on our roster this year. Also, when Wentz went down in the 3rd and came up gimpy after getting his ankle rolled up on it seemed to substantially affect his mobility and his ability to plant and throw. For a dual threat QB it made the Bison really kind of one dimensional with the run after that. It will be interesting to see how that plays out and if it presents a lingering problem. All in all, the Bison are the Bison. They are deep, they have great coaches, and sadly, they have an amazing fan base. They will still be a huge handful all year, but Montana showed they are not invincible.
Second, it was cool to see the MVFC promo video on ESPN as it included a great photo of the Yotes in the Dome amongst the pictures of players from each school. I was shocked that the photo depicting a Jackrabbit player had an opponents hand over their logo on the helmet. Unless you were familiar with our conference and with State you'd have no idea what school that was supposed to represent. If I'm Justin Sell, I'd make a call to Patty V. now to get that remedied. That was just bad and if you're going to portray the conference it should be done in the best light for all the schools, including those guys at that one school in Brookings. SDS...something or other.
Third, it was cool to see the 2014 game against South Dakota as one of the top 5 attended games in WaGraz history (believe it is now the #2 after today). No doubt that had a little something to do with Coach Glenn's return as they love him up there.
Finally, just fun to see some college football again. Seems like a long time in coming and the sweet sound of Brent Musberger's voice floating through my house was a welcomed respite from NFL preseason and CFL games that just don't quite scratch the football itch for me when it starts feeling like fall.
I'm sure the majority of the Yotes players and staff watched this game. I hope seeing the outcome motivates them all to make this season a turning point for big things to come. Go Yotes!

Was texting with a buddy during the game. Thoughts. Teams are going to throw all day long on NDSU if they don't get that secondary shored up.
In the last two years we have blown a game we should have won to Montana at home and lost a tight game up there last year. Comparative scoring doesn't work since NDSU has outscored us by about one billion to three the last two years. Still, after today I have some hope this season.

Should Montana have kicked the extra point after scoring the game winning TD? The TD put Montana up by 2. If (and I am not an expert on the rules) the Bison had blocked the extra point and returned it they would have received 2 points and tied the game. Would have been safer to go into victory formation and take a knee. I would think a pick six or scoop and score would be more likely than a returned blocked XP. But you have to get that 3 point advantage just in case they somehow get a field goal attempt.

I think I heard the TV announcers say the goal posts were lowered by the stadium crew as a precaution to prevent fans from thinking about it. (I also heard Mussberger call Carson Wentz "Connor" once and early in the game it sounded like Muss was saying Ventz for Wentz...I may not have been paying close attention on the Ventz vs Wentz thing.)

I watched most of the game as well, my thoughts:
Frist and foremost, Montana's coach has some sack, what a first game for the new coach Stitt. With that being said, some of those decisions to go for it on 4th down in his own territory was just wreckless.
For Montana, hats off to the offensive line and QB Gustafson. For the most part he had great protetction considering how good of front NDSU has had traditionally. And Gustafson, wow, he made some big plays and throws downfield. He was in absolute command of the offense.
As for NDSU, I would not overreact too much on one game. I thought if they lost this year in the regualr season it would be an earlier game(this one or @sdsu). The Bison offense is still going to be extremely hard to stop, and their defense will get better and better as the season goes. I think they are fine on the front 7 but their secondary was quite bad, and that was exposed by what is a really good receiving corps at Montana. One observation, Wentz is a big man but he takes a ton of shots for a QB, will be interesting to see if he runs that much all season and how his body holds up.

Yes, the posts did go down without anyone rushing the field. I don't think the broadcast showed anyone actually rushing the field. Total pandemonium!
