Any idea on what Huepel makes at Utah St? Kevin McGiven made $186,316 in 2014 as the Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach at Utah State which is the position Huepel would be in now.

I am guessing a guy like Salem is off the table, Big 10 assistants are all making quite a bit more than we could pay as HC. Just a guess but I would think that Salem is making around $400K, would you leave E. Lansing and a top 10 Power 5 program to come to Vermillion and take a $200K pay cut? I love the Yotes, but if I'm in that situation, not a chance in hell. I would be shocked if its not somebody with regional ties. Here are 5 guys that I think will all be in consideration, but not sure how many on this list are interested.
1) Glenn Caruso 2) Jed Stugart 3) Tim Polasek (NDSU OC) 4) Randy Hedberg (QB coach at NDSU, longtime HC at St. Cloud) 5) Scott Strohmeier (IWCC)

the head coaching position not my biggest worry. I'm confident we will find a quality HC to lead this program. Can we open the checkbook and give the new HC the ability put together a well paid, high quality staff though? The HC is the face of the program, but the staff is what determines a great program from a not so great program. We need to have competitive assistant salaries so that we can get and keep quality assistants around. we need to be paying a Coordinator $100K+, assistants need to be in the $85k range. That should be doable for a team in the MVFC, right?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion on the choice of who will lead the Coyotes the next few years, and that's fine. But for some, who have led the charge to get rid of Joe Glenn and staff, and EdMeoerkort and staff, the recommendations and names and logic for them is unbelievable.
My belief is that there is more to simply winning and losing games. The charecter of the coach and his players matter. That's exactly why Ed was let go 4 years ago. No question. I said at the time it would hurt us, it did, but Joe Glenn did put us on the upswing this year despite others feelings thats not true. I beleive it to be true. If zed was fired for his antics and charecte4 years ago, I ghen have no issue with that. I was unaware of it at the time. But if he was fired based on his teams wins and losses, then David Sayler needed his head examined. But I do think it was a charecter issue, so I can live with the firing. But it still set us back.
A few days ago a question was asked by someone about whether or not we were willing to have trouble makers on the team in the interest of winning games. A certain poster basically said he was willing to let that happen "to a point". What's that point? Then I recommended a name of a Power 5 coach that was let go yesterday and a couple of posters didn't ike it because he was either a bad guy ( which in my opinion he isn't even close to being a bad guy ) or he was fired. You don't want to hire a fired coach. What??? Circumstances are very different at every school. Some people are fits, some aren't. That's what this hire has to be about. I have to assume every candidate has football knowledge, but they are looking for a match.
For someone critical of Joe Glenn, then to drop names of NAIA coaches, or a short term D2 coach is inconsistent. I've heard the phrase " we better do a national search or I'm going to be highly disappointed " several times. Stugart, Riggs, and DeBoer are the names being dropped. Really? A national search, and all three of these come from a school less than 60 miles from Vermillion? Then someone said Salem or Huipel, but that recommendation was quickly criticized. It was shot down without merit. When going back and reviewing the facts, Salem did an honorable job of building Augustana. Even though I don't know Josh Hueipel I would think on merits alone his name would shoot towards the top off he list. Knows the JuCo scene. Runner up Heosman. Offensive coordinator at Oklahia and Utah State. Connections would indicate he could put together a staff. And his crews open a shitload of doors recruiting.
The point in all this is if you are going to lead the charge in a movement, at least be consistent. Ed recruited "not good people" players. But you're willing to accept a certain criminal element in order to win? Have a national search, but the only recomendations are coaches from Sioux Falls, or Sioux Falls connections. Blast Joe Glenn for several weeks then post a thank you note to him? Talk about opening up the checkbook and having the money to do this right, yet not buy season tickets? Put down others recommendations yet historically say keep an open mind?
Regarding Stugart or DeBoer, I don't know either one. On the surface they appear to be solid guys. But I dont know the backgrounds. In looking at CF's post of Stugarts record at USF, I'm a little surprised he would recommend him. I'm not critical, just surprised. One year he is 10-1, then 6-5. Then 9-2, then 6-5. Overall that's not a bad record, I agree, but IF you want to be a contender every year, as you have posted, that historic record of his is not consistent with your philosophy.
Speculation on the next coach will be rampant. I will support whatever decision they make. And when they name one, I won't judge them negatively, but rather embrace them and welcome them to the Coyote family. Good luck and best wishes to Herbster and Williams as they go through the process. They will make the right decision.
Keep in mind that although it's admirable to puff out our chest and say we want to win the league, or be top contenders every year in The Valley, there are 9 other teams with more resources that want the same. At the end of the day, Joe Glenn did exactly what he was hired to do. Give his alma mater 4 years of his best, and get us into position to contend. He can retire knowing he did just that. Thank you Joe.

That should be doable for a team in the MVFC, right? Put me in the camp that is more than confident that we will be paying our HC greater than $225K. Start a poll if you want, the O/U on HC salary will be over or under $225K. I say it will be over. In addition, I believe that we will open the checkbook for the salaries of the ACs. The new student funds were tagged from the get-go to address staff pay. My understanding is that the plan was already to fund and pay a competitive salary to a COMPLETE football staff by next season. This will force the issue. I know Herbie will be a sound steward to the University's money, but he also knows that we can be successful and that this is his time to put a stamp on the program. Funding will not be an excuse this time, in my opinion. Here is the thing with Salem, if I were him, I probably wouldn't come back. I would parlay my success as an AC into an FBS OC job, but maybe there is a chance that he wants to be a HC again, and do it at the highest level of FCS - in doing so, he would also be close to his parents. Family will be the pull, IF it is going to happen, not money per se. The stars would need to be aligned for him to want to come "down" to FCS, I think.

I think Paul Rhodes would be a GREAT, GREAT, GREAT, hire. If the stars could align, he would be my #1 choice, no doubt about it. I've had the opportunity to hear him speak a couple of times and coyote nation would fall in love with this guy from day 1. Tough, defensive minded coach that has overachieved at ISU on many occasions with lesser talent. I think he would be a perfect fit at USD in our current situation.

Thank you Joe. I think it is wise to look for experience at the D1 level, have regional experience recruiting, and HC experience as our wish list. I do think there are Great coaches at lower levels of football that have the ability to coach circles around some of their higher level peers. Budgets being what they are USD may have no choice but to try and find a complete staff to go after. SIU went after Jerry Kill and his staff after they had experience together for four seasons at Saginaw Valley St and two years at Emporia State where they only won half their games. SIU was a train wreck when they got there and his record each year was as follows: Overall. Conference 1-10. 1-6 4-8. 2-5 10-2. 6-1 10-2. 7-0 9-4. 5-2 9-4. 4-3 12-2. 5-1 Before SIU hired him he had experience at Pittsburg St, Webb City MO high, Saginaw Valley, and Emporia St. No division one experience, and not much regional recruiting experience. Just a lower division coaching staff that is as good as they come. I just hope it is a true national search and many candidates are considered.

Wonder if Eric Wolford wants another crack at being a HC. He is the former YSU coach. He played for Bill Snyder at Kansas St during one of the biggest program turnarounds in history and if I remember correctly is a KS native.

He is presently an assistant OL coach with the 49ers. Talk about a diverse background. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_WolfordI am of the opinion that offensive coaches tend to make better HC's in college, but that is just a personal opinion. No data to support it. I LOVE the idea of an OL guy as the HC. I would love nothing more than to see a bunch of road graders up front with our core of RBs running behind them.

Tough, defensive minded coach that has overachieved at ISU on many occasions with lesser talent. I think he would be a perfect fit at USD in our current situation. Completely disagree on Rhodes. He's a rah-rah guy with no substance. Broke off his OC this season in order to save his own butt, which he couldn't save due to his own incompetence. His rah-rah act wore thin with the ISU faithful, and those folks are sheep, very tolerant of losing, too tolerant. Frankly, and I hate to say this, the USD fanbase is a striking resemblence to the ISU fanbase. Both want to win, but tolerate losing. Both are just happy to be associated to some big boys in a conference. Both go off the hook and thump their chests when they get the occasional big win. Both have only one goal and that is beating their rival, that's pretty much the season. Both have too many fans who only show up for the big game despite having quality opponents constantly coming to their venues. I could go on, but to sum it up, both start looking forward to basketball season about the first week of October. I don't want any of that for USD. This culture needs to change and Paul Rhodes is not the guy to change it. I really liked YFE's post and he is spot on with alot of things, except that we disagree on ISU's Rhodes. I have been very quite here because, frankly, I keep reading a bunch of crazy stuff and don't see the point in posting non-stop in response. First off, Herbster has known for a couple years this day would come, heck, he knew the day Joe signed on here. Joe Glenn fell on his sword and did what he did for this university and we should be eternally grateful because what he did was buy us time and build a foundation. He was a trusted steward of the program, a program that with the right coach is now ready to explode on to the scene, and he will get little of the credit for it. I'll give him credit. Today the things are in place to go to the next level. I would expect the resources for coaches, the compensation packages, have been addressed. I would expect that given a national search we will attract some very talented coaches. I would expect that we will be able to hire somebody from something higher than the NAIA, D3, or D2 ranks. I would expect Herbie will get the right guy in here, just like he has with every other coach he has hired so far. I think you guys are selling USD short with some of the names you have been talking about here.

Regarding salary and the O/U of 225k, my reflex response is to say we go under and way under, but the more I think the more I could see us going over. We were paying Joe just 145k and a boost of nearly 100k is massive, but that's basically what we did with Craig Smith. I will say that there won't be much purpose in writing that big check if we turn around and keep assistant salaries where they currently are.

I believe this job opening has to be advertised by state law. Iam willing to bet there would be close to 100 applications that would come through the mail. The selection committee made up of loyal people around campus would have imput and it would work if they whittled it down to five applicants and then have on campus interviews. I know back in 1996 Stig was the AD pick but they still went through the committee process and Joe Glenns Assistant Breske was the only other pick, and they had to wait until the D2 playoffs were over to interview Breske and he interviewed horribly and did not really want the job. I think we still did okay and I think we have the right guy. USD can surely do the same.

You can't just keep underpaying a coaching staff and expect results. USD has committed to paying FCOA. You think they are going to make that kind of financial commitment and then not follow it up in other areas like paying a coaching staff? The cost of NOT paying a coaching staff what they need to is greater than skimping on it. Get the right people and pay them, consider it an investment that will pay off with increased gate and other revenue to the program. We've talked of the Dome renovations on here, nothing happens unless there is excitement in the program and a winner on the field. The cost of staying stagnant on this would be catastrophic as change is coming to FCS football. We cannot afford to linger behind when that change comes because SDSU is not planning on lingering back, neither is UND or NDSU. The investment has to be made and now is the time to do it.
