Here are my takeaways after last nights game for what they are worth?
Overall grade C. There were a lot of positives, but also many glaring issues that other teams will see and exploit that need to get fixed. The new coaching staff now has the challenge of addressing these issues as they prepare for an FCS schedule. Additionally, there is the fact that this was an FBS team and they run a triple option, which we will most likely not face regularly, so things may look dramatically better next week.
Offence:
1. QB: Sorry, but I mentioned in a previous post that Streveler would more than likely be the #1, and I think this game only cements that. The hard fact in college football is when there is a coaching change some very good players (including Seniors) lose their jobs. In this case, Streveler has more of the attributes this coaching staff is looking for in a QB than Seager, and he was brought here to get every chance to be the starter for the next 2 years. To bad for Seager, just glad he has a good attitude. (If you did not notice, When Seager entered the game, the NM Linebackers adjusted their drops because the threat of the run had decreased and may have resulted in the int he threw?). Good news is we should continue to see more of the athleticism for Streveler and he is a problem for defensive coordinators to plan for.
2. RB: Tyler Bouma played well, ran strong and did a tremendous job blocking! Should grade out well. The other RBs showed very little, time will tell but need more depth there.
3. Receivers: Liked what I saw, lots of potential, lots of new faces including true Freshman, hopefully we will see growth here.
4. O-Line: Struggled at times, but did a nice job versus an experience d-line. Pass pro needs to improve if we want to be able to throw downfield consistenlty. If we continue to struggle in pass pro, then look forward to a short passing game all year as they try to throw over linebackers who are protecting against the run for Streveler and Bauma.
Defense:
1. D-Line: For an area of concern with their lack of depth and experience, I saw some positives. #16 Loehr played with great energy and was often seen pursuing plays until the very end. The others did well to establish the line of scrimmage. The true freshman Kam Cline looks like the real deal and could be a lot of fun to watch in the future.
2. Linebackers: This group struggled in my opinion. Obviously missing their MLB and signal caller, Wessel, was a big problem, especially against an option team. The 2 outside linebackers are converted DBs, which should give you an insight to the athleticism this coaching staff would like from that position. Both are athletic, but both lack the experience and maybe the strength to attack and shed blockers. It was clear they are not used to moving down hill and establishing the point of attack to disrupt the play. They may be much better suited to defend against spread passing teams that we will see more often during the season, time will tell. Moreland has a high motor and is willing to get in on plays and should improve as the season move along, he did lead the team in tackles for the record. Definitely an area for the coaching staff to work on.
3. DBs: Wow, can we see our cornerbacks do more spin moves while trying to defend a receiver? In my opinion this is the area where the coaches may need to address sooner rather than later. We may see some changes there next week. The corners were not good both against the run or the pass. I was disappointed that I did not hear more from the two returning safeties? This was pointed out as the strength of the defense and I would have liked to see them shine a little more. Once again, statistically, Warner played well and did make some good tackles. Jury is still out on them, they deserve the benefit of the doubt.
Special Teams: I agree with the others who have posted, why is a QB returning punts??? Kicking game looked good, but the return game needs work. Coverage teams did good.
I may sound like a negative nanny, but I am just an old coach who watches game with a critical eye for improvement. That being said, overall, there should be lots of optimism with this team and the new coaching staff. It is becoming clear the type and caliber of athlete this staff is looking to put on the field. This years and next years recruiting classes will eventually help set the future for this program, but until then, the staff has to make do with what they inherited along with a few key transfers and create a competitive team that will set the direction for the future. I am optimistic that this years team can find some success and start to build the future for long term success! Go Yotes and looking forward to next week!
