Memories of this popped up on my phone, reminding me that today is the fifth anniversary of one of the great days in Coyote sports history -- the women's WNIT championship victory over Florida Gulf Coast in the final BB game ever played in the Dome. I'd been to countless games in that place over the years, but never had the atmosphere been as it was that day! This link should get you the recap, the box score and video highlights. Enjoy. goyotes.com/news/2016/4/2/womens-basketball-champions-dakotadome-gets-proper-send-off-with-wnit-title.aspx

The Next has USD at #23 www.thenexthoops.com/ncaaw/the-next-presents-top-25-ncaa-teams-to-watch/23. SOUTH DAKOTA: If there is one team in the country that will relish in the COVID eligibility year, it will be South Dakota. Coming off a 19-6 season and back-to-back Summit League tournament titles, Dawn Plitzuweit enters her sixth year with her top three “super senior” scorers back. Guards Olivia Korngable (led the team in assists) and Chloe Lamb along with post Hannah Sjerven (top scorer and rebounder) will lead a pack of veterans and newcomers into early non-conference tests. The 6’2 Sjerven is a tireless working on both ends, but she must stay healthy and out of foul trouble for them to have another successful season.

Mick Garry has another great athlete spotlight article out: Maddie Krull. goyotes.com/news/2021/12/28/womens-basketball-maddie-brings-a-little-magic-to-coyote-core.aspxsome quotes:"...She had two years' worth of college credits before she was enrolled at USD... It means she's going to be able to graduate with a degree in social work with two seasons of eligibility remaining..." “Coach P calls it ‘Mach I speed.’ I’ll hear ‘You’re always going at Mach I speed! Take a minute and slow down. Take a minute and look at the floor!’ And I’m like ‘OK, OK.’ Coming from her sometimes I’m thinking ‘What do you mean? You’re always go-go-go. You’re always Mach I.’” “She has that kind of charisma to her,” Plitzuweit said. “She has a joy in playing this game and it’s contagious.” The Coyote staff had been watching her for some time, it turns out. “From her eighth-grade year on, you could tell she had very special leadership capabilities,” Plitzuweit said. “When you’re in transition defense and the ball handler gets to come up the court and see everything, it’s really hard to take a lot of things away,” Plitzuweit said. “What Maddie does for us is that she puts pressure on the basketball early. That helps the rest of the defense because everyone gets a few seconds back. That second or two can make a big difference. That’s something that is incredibly valuable for us. The fact that we’re able to depend on such a young player to do that says a lot about Maddie.”

I can tell you that if Maddie wants to pursue her Masters of Social Work (MSW) while at USD, it would be a huge benefit. An MSW is actually required for some jobs in the medical field. My wife got her BSW at USD, but had to go to UNO to get her Masters, because USD didn't have that program back in 2000. They do now, though. It would open up more doors for her. Smart kid, getting some credits done in high school.

another zinger from Mick...
“After she passed it was very hard for me,” Watson said. “But it was always in the back of my head that she would want me to move forward and be the best I could be. Knowing that, I keep her in my thoughts. It helps me want to be a better athlete and a better person.”
“She’s very witty,” Plitzuweit said. “She’ll say things really quietly sometimes but if you’re standing next to her and hear it, you’re smiling and thinking ‘Well played. That was very well done.’”

Kelo Sports interviewed Tia Hemiller about this year's Sweet 16 team: www.keloland.com/sports/usd/member-of-usds-wnit-championship-team-says-current-coyotes-have-winning-mentality/“They just have a winner’s mentality and I feel like the team is a reflection of them. You can’t teach having a winner’s mentality.” “They’re extremely disciplined,” Hemiller said. “It’s hard for other teams to score.” Hemiller said she remembers the Coyotes never being intimidated when playing against teams from much bigger schools...She knows the Coyotes will be ready to go toe-to-toe with Michigan on Saturday. “We’re so proud of them,” Hemiller said. “We’re so proud of all the coaches and the USD staff. It’s definitely incredible.”
