Time to turn the page on Dakota Days.
North Dakota lost a close one at home to NDSU. May be a bit of a hangover game for them coming on the road. Win the line of scrimmage and win the turnover battle and I think we have a very good day.

Win the line of scrimmage and win the turnover battle and I think we have a very good day. Our Oline needs to be healthy. We need to heal up front. Defense is solid. I like our RB rotation. Bell is having a nice year but not sure why Vander Esch or Case aren’t seeing more balls. Wondering if any true freshman will be in the mix for the last 4 games and to still keep their redshirt.

In terms of winnability, this one feels like the Missouri State game did a couple weeks ago. If we play up to our abilities, we should be in a position to win the ball game. If we make a bunch of mistakes, we probably won't. So far this season, our defense has done a great job of containing the run game. That HAS to continue on Saturday. That Weah kid is a horse. We will need all 11 guys flowing to the ball. Stop him on first down and make them try to throw the football. Offensively, we have to establish the run. Even if it doesn't work right away, we have to commit to it. Once we become a pass-first type team, all opposing D-Coordinators have to do is dial up a blitz. Our OL does a fine job in pass pro, but has struggled in blitz pickup for whatever reason. Camp gets really jumpy when he feels pressure and that's when bad things start happening. Make them stack the box and give Camp the easy RPO reads. That's where this offense shines.
From what I've seen so far this season, I think the Coyotes can play with every team on their schedule. They just have to play clean football and up to their abilities - and maybe get a little luck along the way. But it all starts Saturday.
In the words of the sign we had hanging in our dorm room in Mickelson Hall - F*** THE SIOUX.

Hey guys, I will be in Verm on Saturday cheering on my HAWKS *sigh*. UND’s defense played lights out Saturday against NDSU and honestly probably should have won the game but there were a few questionable play calls and one really bad INT. Whatever, we move on and we have to regroup quick. As someone else mentioned, this could be a hangover game for UND and I could very well see that. I hope the coaches can get the team to forget the last week and move on otherwise we will struggle all year in the Valley.
Anyways, I’m looking forward to getting back in the Dome and hope it’s much better than the last time I visited when Streveler tore us up.

Looking forward to the game. Last spring you completely annihilated us. We looked awful. Played with no fire.
This is a different team. Not sure what made them turn the corner mentally, but they have. We’ve played solid football but nothing great as of yet. I think this game is HUGE for both programs. I want both teams to play their best as I want to see if we are the team I think we are. The good news for you is no Streveler. The bad news is we also have a formidable defense.
Join us for a Bloody Mary at the northeast corner of Do e parking lot. RED BUS. Good food and good people.

The Coyotes are going to have to clean up just about everything to win this game. The first thing I will say is that for the best chance at a win the Coyotes play calling is going to have to go back to being unpredictable on offense. If they want to use the old school strategy of running up the middle too often on first down and on second for that matter they will not have a successful day again a very good defensive team. They absolutely need to use the screen game and short passing game as a way of ball control. UND is gonna be way to good up the middle. If the Coyotes want to try running between the tackles fine, but if it is not working don't bang your head against a brick wall repeatedly and find yourself in 3rd and long too often. The Valley is a hard league to have success running the football without having an all around unpredictable offense.
Camp is going to have to have a good day throwing the football because if the Yotes are to win that is the most likely way it will get done. He is streaky in his accuracy. He will have his moments of being pretty good but then he can also have his moments of really being off as well.
The crowd will be needed against UND as well. The crowd wasn't so good on D-Days so that will need to be better. It is ok to cheer on defense on 1st and 2nd down.
I can see this as a game where the Coyotes are not able to get away with making mistakes and they will probably make a few too many to win a game like this. I am gonna give UND a 55% chance to win and will go with them 24-17.

I honestly think UND will blitz and blitz and blitz Camp some more. They’re going to see on film and from last year that if he is uncomfortable then he becomes erratic or they can sack him. He must identify the hot route and get rid of the ball.

I am a believer in playing an aggressive game. When things get tight and tough the coyotes tend to go in a shell both offensively and defensively. I would like to see them change and when things get tough they should get aggressive. I do think in a game like this that time of possession is going to be very important and obviously turnovers as well. It would be nice if the coyotes could pull a couple of great special teams plays out of their hat as well. But the bottom line to me is if the coyotes play aggressive most of the time including if it's a tight game situation I think they have a really good chance to win. If they get too conservative and passive I do not think they're going to win.

I am gonna give UND a 55% chance to win and will go with them 24-17. There is a lot of this post I agree with. For starters, we need to continue to play better. And I know we are capable of that. So now we just have to do it. Regarding the play calling, what one person deems as unpredictable is predictable to another. There will be plays that work, others that won’t. Personally speaking I don’t think we win this game in the air. I believe this game is won or lost on the ground. I look for balance statistically and if we achieve that we have a great shot at winning. I’d like to see around 375-400 yards offense and about 50/50 run vs pass. Camp is fine. He’s a FRESHMAN. He’s not a seasoned vet….yet. He’s going to be very good. I also agree with the crowd being raucous. Our guys naturally will feed off that. Quite honestly our fan base doesn’t do a good job of utilizing or creating home field advantage. Part of the attendance problem is directly related to the attitudes of our fans. If we are winning, yeah ok, we’ll come. The minute we aren’t winning they don’t come. This is a problem we need to fix. The DakotaDome should be honestly a “hell hole” to play in as an opponent. NDSU is off the charts in that regard. Those fans are brutal and dare I say…obnoxious. UND is not as bad but certainly is loud. They allow beer sales and honestly by the end of the game there’s a strong drunken Corp of fans that become quite vulgar and pour beer on our players as they depart the field. More than one Meierkort team took that abuse. If we play to our capability we have a great shot at taking down #10 North Dakota. I’m certainly not good enough to predict anything. I know this…if we win Saturday, we are still contenders. If not, then we’re gonna have to pull off an upset or two to extend the season. I like our defense. I said a month ago and I’ll say it again. They are good enough to keep us in every game we play. If our O-line continues progressing as they have, then that only enhances our chances by shortening the game. That’s who we are in my opinion right now. Oh yeah…..PLAY WITH PASSION

You guys seem to have a really balanced rushing attack. Is there one back that seems to stick out? How has Camp progressed from his freshman year? I thought he looked like a really promising QB. Seems to play the game a bit like a shortstop if that makes sense and if I’m not mistaken (kinda like that Matt Corral kid from Ole Miss).

It's my opinion that you don't necessarily come into a game thinking you have to do this or that to win. Of course you have a game plan coming in and you do the best to execute that game plan. For me the best teams and the best coaches are ones that can adjust to the team that they are playing against. The best way to attack the fighting Hawks is basically to find their weaknesses and attack that. And once the defense adjust then you counter adjust. I'm always for the coaches that know how to coach on the fly and know how to make really good in-game adjustments. If the coyotes are able to run the ball at the heart of the UND defense then sure that would be a big advantage. Just because the coyotes can run against Cal poly or against Northern Arizona does not mean they're going to have success running against the fighting Hawks. If the coyotes run the ball up the Middle with no success and they keep doing it over and over again without success and without adjustments that's a recipe for almost sure failure. I maintain that if you are not able to control the line of scrimmage then I really like the idea of attacking with bubble screens to the wide receivers or running backs because that's a great way to control the clock and it's a great way to keep possession. Winning in football to me is about making adjustments and counter adjustments when needed. Coaches that are unable to do that successfully are typically going to be on the losing and More than The winning side.

If I am North Dakota there is no way I'm going to allow the coyotes to win the game by running the football. I agree that Carson camp is going to be a good quarterback but he is still a little bit raw and if I'm there defense I absolutely am going to make him beat their defense through the air.
One thing that it seems like camp has been doing fairly well is hitting the slant pattern so I would like to have the coyotes definitely have that in their arsenal on Saturday. If I am UND I definitely also make the coyotes beat them long because camp just has not had the accuracy downfield very well yet this year.
Another thing I believe is that the coyote defense cannot allow North Dakota just to ball control the game and beat them in the time of possession by a good amount. To do that I come out ultra aggressive. The thing I like about being aggressive on defense is that it keeps the players on their toes and also likely keeps the crowd in the game more as well. It is good to respect North Dakota as they are a good team but don't over respect them and instead just simply go after them.

Good luck this Saturday. I've enjoyed reading what you all have had to say. USD looked like they had a lot of potential last spring but I haven't had the chance to watch one of your games yet. I'm sure this will be a tough battle as both programs need a W badly. Also, thank you for not being arrogant Bison fans.

It is good to respect North Dakota as they are a good team but don't over respect them and instead just simply go after them. USD MUST run the football. It's what our RPO offense is predicated on. If we can't establish the run, a lot of our passing game cannot work as intended, and then the responsibility falls on the QB to push the ball downfield in the vertical passing game. Most of the slants that you see in games are coming off of RPO with run action causing the LBs to step up and opening up windows to complete those passes. We've seen it in the spring season and against MSU, that when we can't get the run going, it forces us to use our young QB in ways that aren't best suited to his strengths at this point in his career, like forcing the ball downfield in the vertical passing game. While I agree that simply running inside zone and beating our head against a wall isn't very successful either, we need to establish the run game to make things easier for our OL and Camp. Running the ball allows our young guys upfront to be aggressive and try to set the tone. Ask any OL what he's most comfortable doing, run blocking or attempting to pick up blitzes in pass pro, and he will choose run blocking every time. As you noted, running the ball also makes defenses commit more guys to the box to stop it, clearing up reads for the QB and giving us more 1 vs. 1 matchups with our WRs so we can be more successful when we get aggressive and push the ball vertical. Everything hinges on establishing the run.
