Then again maybe Johnston sees Irwin being more effective in taking away Korngable's drive and feels like Nelson can stay with Lamb off the ball enough to play her?

I'm not great at the Xs and Os analysis (I'm more of a stats guy), so I'm glad to hear all of your perspectives. I will say this: Both squads are relatively full-strength (aside from Myah not being 100%), and both seem to have found their stride. That's an ideal situation for anyone who wants to see an epic rivalry game. Games like this are good for the Summit, good for the state, and good for girl's/women's basketball.
Better if we win, though...

Impossible to say. Lamb might have 30 or she might have an off night and it might not really have a whole lot to do with the defense ... but I'd think it'd be Irwin who gets the assignment regardless. The Meyer-Krull matchup will be interesting. Meyer appears to me to be a more advanced offensive player but will she be able to deal with the pressure Krull will bring? Will Krull be able to take advantage of her getting into the lane on the other end? Sjerven will outplay the SDSU posts ... but by how much? Will the first couple times Sjerven falls down does she pick up fouls on Burckhard or whomever, or do the refs ignore it and say quit falling down? Impossible to say. From my vantage point it appears Nelson gets the Korngable assignment. How does that play out? Does Nelson's size bother Liv a bit on the mid-range pull-up game? Or is Nelson not quite quick enough to stay with Korngable? Does SDSU think they can kind of "hide" Selland on Watson? How does that work for them? Does Kyah bang a few 3s and hurt the Jacks with some drives and on the offensive glass as a result? Lot of interesting subplots. Good question. Last year Selland played a 'rover' of sorts because she was matched up against USD's weakest shooter. You can't do that with Watson. After a pretty bad start to the year, she is 5-11 (45%) from three in SL games.

Better if we win, though... Before looking at stats - using only my limited Xs/Os/matchups perspective - I was honestly thinking it would end up being a Yotes win by 20+. I think the stats show SDSU's style and consistency will make that unlikely, but I do think USD is quite a bit better right now. (maybe ~12-15 points better at home) Weird things can happen in rivalry games though, which is what makes it fun. Hopefully Selland and Hansen will both be 100% for rounds 2 & 3.

I love beating state. There's nothing better. We've done it regularly now across most sports for the past 5 years or so. MBB needs to do it more consistently. But WBB is always a fun one. State fans are already coming up with excuses for a loss that hasn't happened yet. After we win, it'll be a bunch of "O Selland is injured" or "refs lost us the game". They are a crap fan base and can't handle being second best in the state.
We'll hear all about how Hannah can't stay off the ground like we always do. She lives in their heads rent free. She's been the best player in the conference for 3 years and they just can't handle that fact.

I think there are probably a lot of people, even non-State fans, who aren't going to readily call that a "fact."

Yeah, maybe. I guess. And Selland last year. Lamb could make a strong case this year. It's a long way from being a fact. And that's not to take anything away from Hannah, who is undoubtedly a unique force in the league and year in and year out one of its absolute top players.

I'm gonna disagree on Selland. The only reason Hannah hasn't put up 20+ a game is because we had the hardest non-con in the country. You can only do so much against girls that are a full 6 inches taller than you in the P5 games.

You can disagree all you want. The head to head last year didn't lie.

Strong argument for best player in the conference there.

Strong argument for best player in the conference there. I mean, if it's between Selland and Sjerven and you bring up the head to head. You don't think having home court in both matchups makes a difference?

Some, sure. But it seems borderline insane to argue that somebody is the best player in the conference and then say that you aren't going to pay attention to the two games against the other best player because you don't like the location.

I mean, Duffy was the national mid-major Player of the Year in 2020....
Myah probably wouldn't have won POY in 2021 if the Jacks had lost the two Yotes games, .... but they didn't. They won. So I've got no problem with it. Usually the POY comes from the regular season champ. Not always, but usually.
So if the Yotes sweep or split the rivalry games this year, Hannah (or Chloe) both have a good shot at it.
You don't join a team like the Jacks or the Yotes WBB if you are trying to win individual awards anyway. There are a ton of role-players on both teams that would be featured starters on other teams. That's the beauty of it.
