If we can get that many fans to Wichita why can't we get a decent crowd at a home game. Attendance sucks at home games with the quality of teams we have had. Students are the worst!!! Where is the football team to support the basketball teams.

It’s just hard with basketball. It’s more than once per week. The big non con games always seem to be on a weeknight. Most of the population is an hour away. If I lived in Yankton or Wakonda, maybe not as big of a deal. Weather could be bad. It’s late, cold, and dark driving home. If you can watch at home, it becomes too easy.
So far, my son’s football schedule hasn’t conflicted with our football season tickets. But next year that could change. Then during the winter, we’ve got basketball on weekends too. There’s a lot of factors that add to less than ideal basketball attendance numbers.
The sweet 16 just happened to be at a drivable location in a historic run. My kids didn’t have conflicts with their activities. So we drove the 7 hours each way.
Something else I don’t like is starting next year the NCAA is going to a super regional format. Only two sites for better media coverage. But they’re on the coasts. It’s that way the next several years. If we make a run any of the next several seasons, we certainly won’t have that attendance. It’s rather unfortunate for folks in the middle of the country.

Football team used to come to the games and they fired everybody up. Students in general used to go to games of all kinds. It's not a student athlete problem, it's just a student problem. We've had this discussion on here before, but in the last several years kids have shifted to watching the world through their phones rather than getting out and living in it. I would guess over half of the kids that graduate from USD have never been to a game of any kind outside of DDAYS and maybe the state U bball games. It's a bigger problem than the football team not showing up to basketball games. |

I was a student when smartphones became a thing. Can confirm they weren't going to games back then either.

I was a student when smartphones became a thing. Can confirm they weren't going to games back then either. It wasn't crazy, but there were still people there. Students would at least fill up the far left side of the old bleachers at FB games for the first half most of the time. |

When I went to the U (a long time ago) I went to all the FB and BB games but my hometown in the Black Hills was 400 miles away. Many students lived within 200 miles so was easy to go home on weekends.
Especially freshman and sophomore students were notorious for "running home".
I always thought it was odd and was as if they weren't even in college!
I also think being attached to electronics certainly doesn't help.
So marketing and Howling Pack have those challenges. Having student centric activities such as tail gating, food, etc all help.

If it's anything like their version of the men's article, then you're better off not thinking about it. I don't care if the mediocre coach at Upper Iowa has been to Bunyan's once. |
