I'm hearing that Krull and Watson were hoping to follow Dawn to WVU, but have not heard from her yet. This wasn't any kind of collusion on Dawn's part, just them wanting to follow her. Guessing Dawn would take them if they still wanted to leave after meeting with the new coach? But that's just speculation. I'd hope that they would at least wait for a new coach to talk to them. A P-5 coach mentioned that the Vermillion job is probably less attractive w/o those two on the roster. Also hearing that this process shouldn't have taken this long. Must have had plan A fall through, and didn't have a plan B in place? Speculation on that. That's disappointing, if true. I actually heard the Dawn was hoping to have Krull and Watson follow her and they are the one's considering it, not the other way around. IDK? My source said they were not happy they have not heard from her. Said that Dawn told this source she would never want to hurt USD. So the rest is open to interpretation. (unless you have something more specific) I would hope Dawn wouldn't be poaching kids. That would be pretty crappy.

Either way, it will have to be their choice. Which is as it should be. I'm sure they have more than one voice in their ears about what to do. Would be nice to have a coach about now....

I don't believe a coach gives a damn about the school they just left. If they can steal a player that will help them they will

With respect to the statement "this process shouldn't have taken this long," its been 7 days. If we don't know anything by next Friday, then we can start to question things.

I checked flight records out of the Vermillion airport. Nothing interesting. The university plane went to the twin cities yesterday, but that isn't an odd destination at all. Otherwise all travel through Vermillion has been to/from other tiny regional airports in the area or the black hills.
FWIW, I checked with the men's search too back when that was going on. Never saw anything in the direction of Utah. I'm guessing our candidates are flying commercial and getting picked up.

My hope is Maddie and Kiyah at least talk to the new coach. If they then decide to leave that’s their choice but would be extremely disheartening. I would also be disappointed in Dawn if she actively pursued those two. Dawn was good for USD but please don’t forget USD was good for Dawn. It was a win / win and everyone on both sides should keep it that way. If both girls want to end up at WVU after a cooling off period then that’s the way it is. My hope is they’re Coyotes through and through.
My hope is administration is working round the clock to secure our new head coach. This job is a good one, but if those two gals pull the plug and leave, it will diminish it somewhat. It’s time to have a coach in their sights and wrapping up a deal.

I went all the way back to Wichita. Nothing worth mentioning since then. flightaware.com/live/airport/KVMR/departures

RE: the Coach P, Kyah, Maddie deal. I keep thinking her son still plays here so I can't imagine she'd be looking to not only leave us for WVU but take half our stuff too. Would make it kinda weird to come back and watch a men's game. Just thinkin out loud.

Would make it kinda weird to come back and watch a men's game. Just thinkin out loud. I don't think she cares about that frankly. This is a business for her, it's not personal. She's no longer a Coyote and owes us nothing. Coach P is a Mountaineer now, and everything she does will be to the benefit of her Lady Mountaineer's. We shouldn't take it personally either, its just the life of a mid-major. On to the next coach, the next team, and I'll support all of them the same way I did Coach P and this team. The girls that stay and play I will likely support even more greatly for their loyalty to the pack! Go Yotes!

So I looked at the coaching moves this year to compare our timeline with other schools, just to get an idea of what is typical this year: wbbblog.com/womens-basketball-coaching-changes-tracker-2022/Right now there have been 29 jobs filled, and there are 15 jobs open, including USD. I wanted to narrow down a comparison, so I excluded any that were retirements, firings, mutually agreed to parts ways, etc. Basically I am only looking at situations where a coach has left for another job, typically a better job. That way we have a good idea that the athletic department didn't have ample time to prepare, as might be the case in a "retirement" or firing. I also excluded any internal hires, where the coach was replaced by a current staff member. Outside hires only. Here is what was left:Filled Jobs | Days to Fill | Georgia | 3 | Dayton | 5 | Delaware | 7 | UCF | 8 | Missouri State | 9 | Kansas City | 10 | Buffalo | 11 | Open Jobs | Days Open | USD | 8 | Towson | 3 | USC Upstate | 2 |
Average: 7.6 days, maximum 11 days.
If we exclude Georgia (SEC), Dayton (Atlantic 10) and UCF (AAC) to just look at "mid-majors" then the averages are: Average 9.3 days, maximum 11 days.Today is day 8, Monday is day 11. If it goes longer than that, I think criticism is justified. I would guess that these search times might have been longer before the transfer portal went crazy. Just a guess. On the bright side: Butler is currently the only open job that I would put above USD, and only because of conference ties.

I did a quick Google search and Missouri States time table should be similar to our own for a couple things. Missouri states WBB coach makes a base salary of $240k similar to what USD can offer. (Fair warning I ran with the first number I found, could be off or old) Both aren’t first year threats, there’s university backing and fan support, the two seem new because they’ve finally gotten attention but there’s history of success.
Missouri state is, IMO, probably more attractive which made it easier for them. Geography wise they are a better climate and a little better recruiting ground. And even though many like to say the MVC isn’t the same, that’s true, but the MVC brand still holds a lot more weight than the summit. And the level of competition is generally 3-4 teams and not just the top 2.
Losing 3 super seniors hurts us, but it shouldn’t make the job that unattractive when the transfer portal makes it easier than ever to fill in some roles. What it comes down to i think is two things, location and league affiliation. Like others have said it’s a business and unfortunately we have those two key things we have to try and sell to a new coach.
