You're probably right about the order kids have to choose a college fb program. A great variety of college selections for majors in much more important.
There are over 1.1 million HS fb players in the U.S. Only 71,000 on average play college ball and of the 71,000 only 852 play pro ball. Which is the same as being struck by lightning once in your life! So unfortunately, like most dreams the pro dream only comes true rarely.

Nielson addressed this in a halftime interview during the women's game today. Elsen asked him about it directly. Nielson said the goal all along has been to announce a new OC before the spring semester and that there should be an announcement coming in short order.

If that’s the route they were going, I would think they would’ve already announced it.

This is getting somewhat ridiculous. It would seem either no one qualified and experienced wants the job as offered or someone's in place, but they're still involved with their old team and are waiting to announce it. What other possible scenarios could there be?

There’s plenty of scenarios that fit. Maybe the ones being considered were offered higher quality jobs or head jobs at the same time? Maybe the coaches being considered just had their season end the past 10 days and inclement weather has delayed their ability to get here? Maybe they’ve got a coach in waiting but he’s wanting to bring his assistants with him? Maybe the one coming is still under contract at another school? Not all school contracts are the same. Maybe Bob needs a bump in salary pool and that can’t be acted upon until after new year.
Here’s an interesting fact. We did NOT lose one recruit that originally commited to us months ago. Not one.
We also have some potentially awesome players looking hard at us in the transfer portal. Not having an OC named hasn’t affected their decision one iota.
We got one really good early signing class coming in. Excellent. Yet so many of you are worried about having certain coaches named or not. You are all on Nielsens butt about every damn thing. I think many of you want Bob to fail. That’s nuts. Herbster extended his contract for a damn good reason. He knows how to coach. Let him fix it the way he needs to. We all know 2022 stunk. You’d have to be a moron not to see it. But name one coach that hasn’t had a bad year or two? Good lord.
If Bob doesn’t get it turned around then that’s on him. But I believe he will and I’ll support him. But threatening not to buy tickets or join HP is extremely short sighted. We aren’t perfect, but for my money it’s one great university.
We got some great kids coming in. Stefan’s son. Todd Drummond. Others from all over that are legit players. And if we land even2 or 3 from the portal it’s a game changer. Please get positive instead of being so negative.

I agree with yoteforever about the signed recruits being excellent. I watched every one of their video highlights. There are some real athletes, and a lot are fast too! As you know more can be coming in the portal and next signing period. So I also agree--be positive and support the program!! Doing less doesn't help!

Please get positive instead of being so negative. I'm not being negative, I'm being realistic, and all your scenarios were covered in my statement. Fact: we did lose a previously committed recruit to UNI, but that's still not bad and I have no problem with our recruiting class, in fact I'm pretty impressed with it and hope we can add some transfers in the February signing period. Want Neilson to fail...be real. Anybody who's on here wants nothing more than for the 'Yotes to succeed but are also more than entitled to their opinions and mine happens to differ from yours. Why else would a fan invest time and emotional involvement to come on here. Since we're getting personal here, maybe you're just too close to the situation and want your friend to succeed. Don't blame you for that. I'd want the same for my friends, but the record remains: five of seven losing seasons. Not many places a coach would be able to survive that. Finally, don't question my support of USD athletics or academics financially or in any other way. I think I'm plenty generous in my giving, especially seeing that my career was in the lucrative education field, and I will continue to do so.

Everyone on this thread wants USD to succeed. I think that is plain as day. I hope you are all correct that this class has some talent in it, but having done this for too many years to count, the truth about a recruiting class doesn’t show out until 2-3 years down the road. Every class has talent/speed/etc, but can those kids make the transition from high school success to MVFC success is a huge ?mark. I love the optimism, but let’s taper it until we see the on field impact down the road plus we all know playing a bunch of young kids in this league is not a recipe for success. The one concerning piece is that we signed a number of kids that only had D2 offers and we were the only FCS offer. Truly hope we found some diamonds in the rough.

I would also add that USD has seemingly been a stepping stone for our really good players to seek the portal after a great season. Be nice to have some stability by having our upper class developed type players stick around for 5 years. If we can get to a point where we are bringing back experience within the program would be a good path to follow, but the portal will hurt usd more than it will help.

To be fair, USD isn't the only school that has a stepping stone issue. NDSU has suffered from this as well and they just lost several players to the portal.
With this open transfer portal we're in a new era of CFB from the top of P5 all the way to FCS. Uncharted waters.

WHAT IS GOING ON? I seriously cannot believe that we have not announced an OC yet. At this point, we better get one of NDSU or SDSU's assistant coaches or an FBS bowl eligible team's assistant.

I know at least one candidate was on campus for an interview this week.
