What is going on with the Women's Volleyball team. I know they have likely played some tough competition but 3-15 does not seem like a program that is headed in the right direction.
I will defer to anyone that is closer to the program but instead of going forward this year which seemed to be the natural progression, it look like the Coyotes are going backwards.
USD tradionally hasn't had the best results in many Women's sports other than maybe basketball & track. Title IX may be giving equal opportunity but the wins sure aren't adding up very quickly in some of these sports.
I honestly don't follow volleyball and not many others do either but it would be nice to truley get the program playing a bit better.

The volleyball team did just knock off Utah Valley, which one the Great West last year and has one of the top players in the conference back.
The problem with the volleyball program is that it's a very, very young team, and the lone senior is a horrible leader.
I really feel bad for Matt Houk, who has had to build up the volleyball program from almost ground level. When Brian Lampa left to follow his friend to Washington State, he left the team full of transfer who were seniors, and that was his recruiting contribution.
This year the lone senior is Kristen Kritenbrink, who is as far of a leader as one can find. She is very inconsistent and doesn't acknowledge her mistakes, but looks just pissed when other mess up. She is full of herself basically.
Tahnee Reed is a junior, but those who have seen them play know she is a reserve/D-II to D-III player. The other person who came to USD with her that Lampa recruited, left the program for a D-III. Reed kind of looks like that as well. Lampa was an awful recruiter.
There is another junior, and she is a JUCO in her first year at USD. Houk has brought in many talented freshmen this year and last year. One of the problems was that one of the players he brought in last year was too good.
Bailey Reshal was a tremendous player Houk found in Wisconsin and brought her to USD. She was so good that the University of Wisconsin came knocking at the door and she transferred. She has started two matches for the Badgers as well.
Houk schedule a lot of well established D-I teams in order to throw the team to the fire right away and get quality experience, so the record doesn't totally represent how the team has played. Hopefully they can rack up more wins, and hopefully this team reaches a great level in two years.
They are just too young right now. Kind of reminds you of North Dakota 2-3 years ago. A young team with a lot of talent.

CF, I will tell you that in my opinion, Matt Houck is one of the finest up and coming coaches in college volleyball. He came highly recommended by Pete Waite (University of Wisconsin coach). Matt is the kind of coach you would almost beg your daughter to play for. For a dad that has had his daughter play at the highest level, I will tell you Matt is a breath of fresh air. Wisconsin did indeed steal one of his top recruits from the '09 class. Matt will recruit well, and he is the kind of coach that kids will play hard for. Give Matt time.

I have heard good things about Houck as well. Hopefully he will be the one that gets the volleyball program to the highest and most respected level the team has even achieved. Just a little puzzling how they are struggling so much this season.

Coyote Fan,
A really young team is usually going to struggle. The adjustments from high school to college take some time, so you have be patient, even though that's probably the worst thing to ever tell you. A team just doesn't blow up over night.

CF#1,
I don't expect the team to blow up over night or be a world beater either but I do expect better than 3-15 do you?

With the senior leadership they have, to go along with the youth, yeah I expected a very rough year. Like i said, it reminds me of UND a few years ago when they struggled to win matches.
It's called being realistic and knowing the team. It's not like USD is playing crappy teams every week. They are playing some decent teams, so yeah, I expected a rough year.
You don't even follow the program except for the wins and losses, so check out the team, who they have played and what youth can do to a team when there is crappy senior leadership from the past coach.

So it took them 5 sets to beat BHS ;-)
Hopefully that means they beat SDSU and it's not just a tourney where they beat someone on a neutral court, unless that someone is Nebraska.

Yeah, this was a straight up match against SDSU in Brookings. After winning the first set 25-18, USD dropped the next two sets before battling SDSU to a 25-20 fourth set win. USD controlled much of the fifth set as well. SDSU tried a late charge but lost 15-11.
Needless to say how big of a win this is for such a young USD squad. They lost to SDSU in a tournament earlier in the year, so this shows the progress the team has made under the great coaching of Matt Houk. This will hopefully help win some recruiting battles in the state of South Dakota.
Congrats to Matt Houk, it was definitely a STEEP hill for him to climb this year. I know earlier someone asked what happened to this program? Well, what do you have to say now?

Definately a nice win for the Yotes. It looks like they have gotten better since the point of the season where they were 3-15. The Volleyball program would be the afterthought tenant of a new arena. I think it would be a nice bonus for them to have a better situation than a piece of hardcourt in the midst of turf inside a dome. Go Yotes!!!
