My hat is off to Coach Boots for figuring out a way to pull off (maybe) the biggest win of his career at USD. I admit that I have had my doubts if he still had the fire in the belly to bring this program through transition. One game does not make the season but this one victory will go a long ways towards off-setting some really dismal performances. Also, my congratulations to the seniors, Krogman and Westbrook, for setting the pace. Their inspired play no doubt brought out the best in the rest of their teammates. And, a "well done" to what appeared to be a a nice turn out of students who were into the game. Finally, this win, with a lot of fans watching, will certainly help with the promotion of a new BB arena.

Completely agree with your assesment of Ryan Williams. In addition to being a good coach and recruiter, he is a good guy.

Watched the 2nd half, ouch. Gruis and Westbrook are two of our best players but doubt if they would be getting very many minutes for ORU.

Iceman You are correct - Joe Salem was the coach when I was in school so that is my excuse!

Regarding the need to build enthusiasm for Coyote athletics with current students, I think the Administration and the Athletic Department have to seriously focus on this issue. It may cost some money now but the students of today will need to be the fans attending athletic events, and providing financial support, in the future.
How to accomplish it.... I am not sure but a good place to start is to study what has worked at similar schools. It will no doubt take a multi faceted approach starting with initial student orientation, gaining support for the effort from all university related clubs, fraternities/sororities, etc. The coaches - especially a guy like Joe Salem, would make a huge difference by addressing student groups about upcoming games and how the team (their fellow students) needs their support. Its the "12th man" on the football team etc.
It will take some creativity to get students to the games to start with but they need to come away with a positive experience and want to come back.

I am very optimistic about Coyote athletics. We now have Administration and Foundation support for major facility enhancements but maybe more importantly, their understanding and appreciation for how solid athletic programs can enhance the university as a whole.
As for butts in the seats, winning programs are no doubt very important, but it also takes innovative and effective ways to lure the students into the seats now so that they become enthusiastic supporters as alums in the future.

To quote cf: USD should compete with who they consider their peers. THEY say their peers are SDSU and NDSU so THEY need to pony up.
Who the hell are the THEY? Does Jim Abbott have some sort of secret stash? Most serious supporters of Coyote athletics have increased their financial support. And, some just complain we aren't giving enough.

cf, You like to research issues, (and to your credit, I think your have some ability in this area) can you tell us how the Coyote athletic budget compares with NDSU, SDSU, Montana, UNI and other top FCS football powers? Money isn't everything but it is a huge factor for top programs at the BCS and FCS levels.

Regarding Dave Boots, I am afraid we may be seeing a Rich Glas scenario repeated. Glas was a highly succesful coach at UND but was unable to maintain a high level program at UND. They eventually parted ways but after far too much mediocrity.

A good hire but it will be interesting to hear his reasoning for wanting to jump back into what will certainly be a challenging situation. A dated piece of bio but still worth looking at: www.coacheshotseat.com/JoeGlenn.htm

I strongly agree with the previous couple posts. Ed hasn't done everything right but he is far better than his recent predecessors. Also, read the bunny boards and see how they are crying that Stig doesn't have the financial resources to compete, etc. etc. I would wager that Ed has far less $ to work with by a quite a ways. A big plus for the U today is our AD, Saylor. If you haven't met him yet, seek him out. He has a great vision and I am confident he will not condone or sustain mediocrity. BUT, he also needs financial resources to continue the progress.

Three thumbs down. The proposed logo gets lost in the crowd. A suggestion: A bold "U" with a bold "SD" inside the uprights. Maybe it would be a retread because I freely admit to not being a student of history on this subject. J just think the "U" has always been shorthand for the University of South Dakota and it needs to be preserved in some fashion.
