Dawns a good coach for sure and a decent recruiter but let’s not pretend she’s nothing more than money/prestige hungry ( as most coaches are). Coaches are salesmen, they’re gonna tell you what you want to hear to your face and then laugh their way to the bank. Unless you were on the bus you also can’t deny the players rumors.
Let’s see what dawn can do with a rebuild. She came to USD fresh off a WNIT championship and new starting 5 but we were a reload then.
I have mixed feelings towards Dawn, all her speeches about how it’s not always greener on the other side only to bolt as soon as she could for greener pastures and leaving rosters in a position worse than she found them, at least in our case, is not necessarily classy. It’s business, and anyone in business knows that business is the least classy thing of all.

I think Dawn and the players worked very hard to take our program to heights never seen before and for that I’m thankful. I don’t begrudge anyone for making moves that financially set them up in ways that usd can’t necessarily do. It is the same decision the majority of us would make.

I will always appreciate what Dawn did for the program when she was here. She's ambitious. Most competitive people are.

The Dawn shade is absolutely wild to me tbh. She deserves a fn statue in Verm.

I dont' think it's a bad thing that the former USD coaches are having continued success in their careers. We are building on a reputation for 'advancing coaching careers'. Years like this one past, are a bummer, but we've had a real good run in the process. It's also why next year is critical, to get back to the top of the conference!
If we get a great coach, who also wants to spend a decade or two in Vermillion, great. However, I'm happy with the alternative plan, it's worked, so far.

She left us with a great program with an outstanding reputation. It's Coach Karius's job to continue to recruit and build on that legacy Coach P left behind. This first year was going to be rough, just like it was for Dawn and for Amy back in the day. The responsibility for continuing that success doesn't lie with Dawn, it lies with Kayla and the current staff.

It’s business, and anyone in business knows that business is the least classy thing of all. Both Dawn and Jays parents are older and in declining health. To be nearer to them, especially if they need assistance, played a major factor in her decision. There’s no question the Big10 money is real, and that didn’t hurt, but it’s not like the salary difference was night and day. Another factor is the ability to charter in and out of the same city. Morgantown doesn’t have an airstrip that works either. Much like Vermillion. They had to bus 45-50 minutes. Whether you believe this or not, that has hurt USD at times as well. West Virginia was in an article written about the 30 toughest places to fly into Anyone that says Dawn isn’t gregarious would be lying. She is. And that’s what makes her great. But one thing she isn’t is phony. Being an extreme extrovert doesn’t make her a bad person or a phony. It makes her special. Our family can testify how she treated my 88 year old mother in law that lived in Vermillion. She called on her, players called on her, and between Dawn and Jay, made every attempt to get her to games. My mother in law would’ve died for her. It wasn’t phony….it was damn special. Dawn could work a crowd. That’s an awesome trait. Remember Joe Glenn? Those kind of coaches sell tickets and bring fans. How about the several thousand fans that went to Wichita? Dawn played a big role in that. Remember the photo of her riding to practice on the back of a motorcycle cop? How many people would do that? That’s called promoting your program. Endearing fans to your program. Minnesota hired a gem. I’ll be a fan of hers forever.

There was a fair bit a talent in street clothes all year if my old man memory serves me correctly. Dawn didn't get them hurt. The theory I supposed to believe is that Dawn knew she was leaving some time way before the end of last year and recruited down to really stick it to us. Keep in mind in wbb they are on these kids way before their senior year, so she must have been plotting for some time. I'm gonna take a pass on buying that...at all. And to state the obvious again if someone offered me a job with a 20%+ raise today, I'll be cashing their checks in two weeks. It's just how the world works.

The bitterness on here toward Dawn isn't really all that logical. She left here to take a job with a much larger salary at a Big 12 school. It sucked, but can you really blame her?
I think a lot of this stems from the frustration with how this season played out for us. Lost the big 3 to graduation, the other two starters transfer. And then a ridiculous rash of injuries. The result was a roster without the experience and talent to continue the level of play we had become accustomed to. Then to make matters worse we get to spend the year listening to Jacks fans gloat and the media acting like the Jacks the second coming.
Better times are ahead. Let's wish Dawn well and focus on returning to the top of the Summit League.

Agree move on I love our new coaches we lost all the good SD players for 2024 but got a top girl out of Wisconsin. I wonder about the 2 girls from Wisconsin that Dawn recuited to WV we were working on one of those girls. Not sure if they still want to go to WV

Here’s another aspect that’s not being discussed, Dawn had other opportunities to leave USD sooner than she did. She chose to stay longer, and that paid off for her. Rather than take a Mountain West type job, she showed what she could do in 6 seasons. She may well have left after 2020 had it not been for Covid, but she didn’t. Also, she didn’t exactly inherit a juggernaut of a roster. She inherited Alison Arens who played sparingly on WNIT team. Kate Liveringhouse who was a bench player. Jaycee Bradley also. Duffy/McKeever/Frederick were Amy recruits, but Dawn got them to stay. Dawn recruited Chloe & Liv, and sort of had Hannah referred to her. BUT that staff developed the heck out of their recruits. She is excellent, and I will be interested to see how she does at UM. It will also be interesting to see how she fares against Amy Williams.

Winners: -Coach P -Gophers WBB -SDSU WBB (keeps AJ) -USD WBB reputation (as a great place for launching careers)
Losers: -West Virginia WBB -Other Big 10 WBB teams -AJ (only P5 job he was interested in IMO)
minimal effect: -SDSU and USD WBB recruiting (different caliber of player, mostly)
This is all JMO. I don't think we are harmed much from a recruiting standpoint, just like we weren't harmed much by Amy going to Nebraska. The only recruiting negative to me might be some blowback on AJ from his negative recruiting strategy? Or if Dawn poaches players from either team or recruiting class. I would be surprised if that happened, though.
I think it's cool to say that USD has now produced two current Big Ten WBB coaches and a longtime Mountain West WBB coach from our last 3 WBB coaches, alongside a Pac-12 MBB coach. If Coach Pete and Coach Karius have some success and upgrade jobs after 4 to 6 years, I have no problem with that either. It will only enhance the attractiveness of the job for the next hire.
