You sign HS kids in the fall and supplement the roster with transfers in the spring. Standard practice in today's MBB environment.

Are we even looking to add to this class? Did he have an offer from us? I don't think so. I doubt they are. Two of the three guys they signed are considered walk-ons. I doubt they were looking to add another. They are focused on the portal now. Exactly.

There are a couple things that I feel like are being missed in all of this. The first of which is a new found stability - in coaching. Offense - OC - 2nd year; OL - 2nd year; TE - 2nd year; RB - 6th year?; WR - 1st year but from a tremendous program with a great tradition of winning, and experience as AHC, OC, and QB. With Davis and Nagy, especially, getting another year with this offense, I expect VERY big things. Defense - DC - 5th year; DB - 4th year and battled off NDSU, among many others to retain him; ILB - 3rd year, so while we lose players he also knows what we have; OLB - 2nd year; DL - 1st year, but he is ANOTHER Iowa guy. As much I am not an Iowa fan, there is no doubt in my mind they have produced one of, if not the, best defenses year in and year out; also we FINALLY have legit depth at DL. Improvements at DL will go a tremendous way towards providing cushion to the LB and DB positions. With respect to the DB position, I know we lose Harden, but we are also bringing back a ton of experience in guys like Shorter, McKelvey, Barros, Ganeus, and McKenzie. Also, Mike Reid is a transfer from Monmouth that started 11 games and led the team in PBUs. Reading this post just reminds me of how difficult it must be to recruit at USD. The coaching carousel is a revolving door. i.e. This is the 4th coach in 4 years in the WR room. Most of these coaches will or have dipped if the opportunity arises. USD is not an easy sell for recruits. We are lucky to see a 9000 capacity dome 50% full for any home game. Vermillion isn’t exactly a must see . I mean we have a WalMart, a Pizza Ranch, and a Red Roof Inn. Tough sell for top recruits in my opinion. Somebody is doing something right because holding things together the last few years couldn’t have been easy and here we are coming off a 10-3 season. I look forward to this team competing. A revolving door of position coaches is nothing unique, especially at this level. My personal opinion is the most important positions to maintain consistency at are the coordinators and the OL coach.

It was very cool to see Jon's comments about Corey Jenkins. I think it would be a brilliant move for him to keep Corey around and let him be a true COO. Let Jon do what he does best, which is build relationships, set the big picture agenda, work with the higher powers, and facilitate outreach to the fanbase across the country. This is what successful ADs do. They do not micromanage, they empower their deputies and staff to be the best versions of themselves, push them to work hard, set a vision for the entire program and work to build support for everybody (through money and relationships).
I realize he isn't a polished public speaker - it isn't something he has had to do - but Jon knows how to endure himself to people and build loyalty from those he trusts and cares for. I like this recipe. There is risk here, but I think the upside can be great. The guy drips with passion.

I think it’s a great hire in the sense that he knows the school, the fan base and is maybe more willing to ensure we are ahead of the curve in regards to the athletics environment. My only concerns are that he wasn’t directly involved with athletics at DSU (unless I misunderstood his role) and this is D1. Does he have the connections to find the quality coaches to compete at this level. We sometimes still have the D2 mindset and we need to really find a way to shake that away. His brother is deputy director of athletics at UNI. His dad worked in numerous athletic departments, NCAA and a couple conferences. His dad also owns an athletic department consulting company. Jon worked in our AD, Miami of Ohio and for Learfield.

Westside this year was one of the most dominant teams in Nebraska history. The team is littered with D-1 talent. Beau would have played next to a young man going to Notre Dame on scholarship, with a twin brother also walking on there. Another LB is likely the top recruit in NE for 2025. The safety behind them is Caleb Benning, son of former Nebraska RB Damon Benning, who is a top 2 player in Nebraska and going to UNL. Beau's stats: x.com/beauryan_/status/1729610842939805816?s=20

Interesting fact on 78 team. 3 draft picks. Schwab to Packers. Ben Long to Miami. Bill Moats as a punter to Packers. And that was the D-2 era I recall well the 1978 team. I missed only one home game at Inman Field during the three football seasons I was in Vermillion (hurts to write these seasons down: '76, '77 and '78 -- there must be a 25-year mistake!) There are several qualities this year's Yotes have in common with the '78 team. The most notable, seems to me, is the confidence level displayed by this year's team -- I thought the 1978 team started each game knowing they had a legitimate shot at winning irrespective of the opponent. They weren't arrogant: a 1-3 start in 1978 made sure of that. By the end of the '78 season, there wasn't a noticeable weakness on the team. I think this year's team is playing with the confidence one finds on really good teams. [Well, let me backtrack: The 1978 team had a defensive end from Ida Grove, IA. I wondered about that guy. But, I guess he turned out okay: Opposing teams didn't like to use his side of the field. Okay, he is a USD Hall of Fame 2001 Inductee. Sometimes he reads this message board. Never mind.] I'll be in my seat at SDSU's game on Saturday. The Jacks will get a strong challenge from Villanova -- they've played in Brookings in December before. I will also be interested in hearing how the NDSU at USD game turns out. I think NDSU is playing some of its best football of the season and the Bison memory of losing to USD in Fargo probably hasn't faded. On the other hand, USD has established itself in the top of the conference and earned the #3 playoff seed -- no doubt the 'Yotes also remember the regular-season win in Fargo. My guess is the USD team laughs off those who want to drag up a cliche "it's hard to beat a team twice in the same season." Did you let your son get a hold of your log in credentials?

Keys to the game:
1. Crowd needs to be loud the ENTIRE time NDSU has the ball. 2. Stop the run! Our run defense is #46 in FCS and #7 in the MVFC. We need to buck this on Saturday. Lakesbison is right. Their entire offense flows from the running game. 3. Protect the ball, and keep it out of NDSU's hands. 4. Play mistake free special teams. 5. OL needs to have their best game of the year.
I always hate the idea of saying this quarter/half is more important that another, but I did hear an interesting stat earlier in the year on an FCS podcast that most of NDSU's losses over the years have been when they have gotten down early in the game.

I am planting my flag here: Bob needs to stay. He needs to hire a new OC, and if he can get a guy similar to what he did hiring Travis, we are sitting really well. Our schedule next year is NIGHT AND DAY from this year’s. Aiden has the offense looking coherent, D played outstanding in spite of all the injuries. Bob can do it. The University needs to put its FULL support behind him for one more FULL year to prove him out. We have some good looking dudes coming in, but they are FOR SURE gone if Bob is gone. I also think a change at OL is necessary, which is hard to say because I really like Andy. Bumping this for purposes of building up my own ego, not that it needs to be any bigger.

Maybe Burchill will be retroactively awarded with that extra scholarship by the end of the season? Like on a one-year basis, since we had the extra one this year? Not sure how that works, but Burchill has been starting. To the extent a scholarship is available, I have little doubt that it would go to Burchill.
